As Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy rise, some Indian Americans have mixed feelings
When Reddy and his wife, Chandra Gangareddy, immigrants from southern India, settled in the Des Moines suburbs in September 2004, they could count the number of Indian American families on one hand. Only one Indian American had ever served in Congress at the time, and none had dared to mount a bid for the White House. Now, for the first time in the nation's history, two Indian Americans — Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy — are serious presidential contenders who regularly invoke their parents' immigrant roots.

Global investors to buy more into Indian banks: S&P Global
investors looking for better returns are set to buy more into Indian banks as improved margins and stable asset quality make such stocks attractive for bulge-bracket funds, said a report by S&P Global Market Intelligence. The total market value of foreign institutional investors' holdings in Indian banks has risen to ₹8.3 lakh crore as of June 30, from ₹7.7 lakh crore a year ago, said the report. The country's economic growth prospects and the lenders' solid performance are some factors driving the investor interest. Following this trend, more global investors are likely to participate. In its financial stability report, India's central bank said the asset quality of SCBs continued to improve and their GNPA ratio declined to a decade low of 3.9% in March 2023. «More investments in Indian lenders may come from Australia, Europe, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East», said the report.

Canadian Sikh protests outside Indian mission off to a muted start
Sikh group gathered outside the Indian diplomatic mission in Toronto on Monday, a week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised the prospect of New Delhi's involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia. The protests, which are also planned in Ottawa and Vancouver, are aimed at increasing public awareness about India's alleged role in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead outside a Sikh temple on June 18 in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a high Sikh population, one organizer told Reuters. Between 100 and 150 members were expected to join the protests, Jatinder Singh Grewal, a director of the group Sikh for Justice in Canada, said, but only a dozen people had gathered in front of the Indian consulate in Toronto around noon when the demonstration was set to begin. Protesters began chanting «Khalistan live forever» in the Punjabi language. Trudeau said last week Canada was pursuing «credible allegations» that Indian government agents may have been involved in Nijjar's murder. India swiftly denied any role in the killing and described the allegations as «absurd». The accusations have sparked tit-for-tat retaliation from both countries, with each nation expelling diplomats and New Delhi suspending visas for Canadians. «We are asking Canada to expel the India ambassador, Grewal told Reuters on Sunday. The Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, said concerned authorities have been informed of the protests. »Ensuring security of diplomatic premises and personnel is responsibility of the host country.

PCB writes to ICC as wait for Indian visa continues less than two days before scheduled travel
Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday raised serious concerns with the ICC over the delay in national team's travel to India for the World Cup due to visa issues and claimed the anxious wait has already impacted its preparation for the 50-over showpiece. The PCB wrote to the ICC as it continues to wait for visa clearance from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Pakistan were supposed to have a two-day team bonding session in Dubai before their scheduled arrival in Hyderabad on September 27 but it has been cancelled with uncertainty over Indian visa. The Babar Azam-led side plays two warm-up games and as many World Cup matches in Hyderabad starting with the practice fixture against New Zealand on September 29. In the letter addressed to ICC CEO Geoff Allardice, the PCB also claimed that its concerns over visa being granted to players, team officials, fans and journalists for the World Cup in India have not been addressed for more than three years.

The U-shaped link between an Indian wife's job and her husband's salary
Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) upends the common gender norm of the “male breadwinner” norm, i.e. husbands are considered the primary earners with wives contributing to household income only if necessary. According to the State of Working India 2023 report by Azim Premji University which analyses PLFS data, in the households where the husband’s earnings are high, the probability of the wife being employed is low, controlling for individual and household factors. The fall in this probability slows down as husband’s incomes increase in rural India, while for urban areas, there is a reversal beyond a certain level of income. As husband’s earnings keep rising, from approximately ₹40,000 per month onwards, there is an increased likelihood of wives being employed. This U-shaped pattern could result from a change in norms with rising incomes or it could also be due to the fact that such husbands are matched with higher educated wives who have preferences as well as opportunities to access better paid work.
