Investing.com — The Dow closed lower Monday as investors mulled ongoing quarterly earnings from corporate America and awaited further catalysts including the release of key inflation data later this week.

(Reuters) — Futures tracking the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq gained on Friday as investors looked forward to a producer inflation report for more cues on the timing of interest rate cuts, while shares of Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) surged following an upbeat revenue forecast.

The S&P 500 index blew past a series of troubling markers in its relentless rally to 5,000. Now, after the rout on Feb. 13, investors are staring at a potentially long way down before they find support.

In the last few weeks, we saw the drawn-out correction in Bitcoin and its main rival, Ethereum, come to an end.

Since March 2022, the US central bank has increased its policy rate by 525 basis points to the current range of 5.25% to 5.50%. As concerns over potential Federal Reserve interest rate cuts heightened due to the significant inflation figures, major equity markets globally concluded Tuesday's session in the red.

U.S. Treasury yields climbed on Tuesday, with the 10-year yield hitting a two-month high, after a reading on inflation came in above estimates, pushing out market expectations for when the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates until later this year. The consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.3% last month after gaining 0.2% in December amid a surge in the cost of shelter, the Labor Department said on Tuesday. In the 12 months through January, the CPI increased 3.1%. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the CPI would gain 0.2% on the month and 2.9% on a year-on-year basis.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 98.21 points, or 0.25%, at the open to 38,699.17.

Nasdaq slipped on Monday afternoon after briefly surpassing its record closing high from November 2021, while the Dow rose modestly ahead of two U.S. inflation reports this week that could influence Federal Reserve policy. The benchmark S&P 500 closed slightly lower but remained just above the 5,000-point level it crossed on Friday.

gold closed with a loss of 0.48% at $2025 Friday as the US yields chugged higher to close 0.47% up at 4.177%. Spot gold was down nearly 0.70% on the week. The ten-year US yields firmed up by around 3.70% on the weekly basis, whereas the two-year yields were up roughly 2% on the week as the yields settled at 4.48% Friday. The US Dollar Index, which is up nearly 3% from its cyclical low, was up by 0.12% on the week to close at 104.08. The Index was unable to capitalise fully on surging US yields as risk appetite remained healthy. Although the last week was light on data, a major theme has emerged, which is likely to influence gold prices in short term. Resilient US economy and hawkish stance of the Federal Reserve officials are slowly driving this point home that most of the US Federal Reserve officials are in no hurry to cut rates anytime soon. They would like to see inflationary pressure subside further in a broadening manner before they gain enough confidence to cut rates later this year. It means that a March rate cut is virtually off the table, which is in line with the the post FOMC statements of the Fed Chair Powell.

"When valuations are high, the bears will use any negative news to drag the market down," said Dr VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services, referring to "slightly hawkish comments" from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor on Thursday. The RBI kept interest rates unchanged on Thursday, as expected, and signaled rate cuts may not be imminent. The BSE benchmark fell by 723.57 points or one per cent to settle at 71,428.43 on Thursday amid uncertainty about the timing of interest rate reduction after the RBI policy decision.
