Fed gets heartening inflation data, but slow road ahead
inflation is cooling, news that helped ease doubts over how well monetary policy is doing its job after stronger-than-expected price increases earlier in the year. But while progress on a month-to-month basis is increasingly clear, the road to the Fed's 2% inflation goal — measured in year-over-year terms — is likely to be long, complicating discussions about when to cut interest rates. «We are getting evidence that (policy) is tight enough,» San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President Mary Daly told CNBC in an interview just minutes after a Bureau of Economic Analysis report showed inflation did not rise at all from April to May. «It's really challenging to look anywhere and not see monetary policy working: we have growth slowing, spending slowing, the labor market slowing, inflation coming down.»

Looking young and healthy is the new rich, says Varun Alagh
Varun Alagh, founder of Honasa Consumer which owns Mamaearth and The DermaCo, reckons looking young and healthy is the new rich. A decade ago, most youngsters discovered specialised skincare brands through dermatologists. Now, social media influencers do that job. According to Alagh, younger consumers are really into their health, and view skincare as an extension. Edited excerpts from an interview. Why are youngsters so obsessed with their skin care routine now? The emergence of personal voices has led to category education becoming easier. Consumption of social content is leading to the shaping of genuinely good skincare categories. For instance, active ingredients are not something new, but are now getting democratised. Using efficacious active ingredients for skincare and for problem solution and skincare has existed for decades. What was not done earlier is marketing these directly to the consumer. Globally, this realisation came almost 20 years back when brands started to take it directly to consumers. We are seeing this now in India as well.

How you can blend investment styles with mutual funds
A retired professor, 86, shows it's never too late to benefit from mutual fundsBut the risk is that if the earnings growth of a company disappoints even slightly, there can be a sharp correction in its stock because the P/E multiples of such companies tend to be on the higher side due to estimates of higher earnings growth. Franklin India Flexi Cap Fund, ICICI Prudential Flexicap Fund and Parag Parikh Flexi Cap are some examples of value-oriented flexicap funds. The risk with value style is that there can be long periods of underperformance when the markets favour growth companies.

Budget 2024: IVCA seeks reconsiderations over definition of PE firms' control adopted by CCI
BENGALURU:The Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA) has sought a review of the Competition Commission of India's (CCI's) definition of control over companies by private equity (PE) funds in a meeting with the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman ahead of the Budget 2024-25.“When PE funds invest in companies, they have some rights to protect themselves that can be viewed as a control position. So, the question was if there can be an exemption for PE funds," Srini Sriniwasan, vice-chairperson of the industry body for alternative assests, told Mint in an interview on Tuesday.Besides, the IVCA discussed measures to boost domestic capital in alternative investment funds (AIFs) to finance infrastructure, credit, startups and growth companies in the pre-budget consultation meeting on 20 June. The finance minister is expected to present the budget by July end.Sriniwasan, who is also the managing director of Kotak Alternate Asset Managers Ltd, asked for more clarity on the definition of what constitutes a PE investor.

Expert view: Market multiples may see a de-rating over next 12 months, says Nitin Bhasin of Ambit
Nitin Bhasin, the head of institutional equities at Ambit, says negative earnings surprises have increased over the last two quarters, which may continue, leading to a potential de-rating of market multiples over the next 12 months. He believes the current financial year (FY25) may be a year of earnings normalisation, and small and mid-caps, trading at near all-time high valuations, will likely benefit from a bottom-up approach.
