MUMBAI — The Indian banking sector exited its worst-ever downcycle after Covid, which led to a major clean-up in the balance sheet across the board. But it’s public sector banks that have seen an almost 360 degree shift in earnings performance, and this reflects in the stock prices, as many of them turned multibaggers since the pandemic. Despite the rally, many of the PSU banks are still reasonably valued, believes P Krishnan, CIO and Managing Director, Spark Asia Impact Managers.

COST Provident Lowe's Target show debate Debate over rate moves at US central bank is shifting
Federal Reserve officials close in on the end of their tightening campaign, the debate is shifting from how high interest rates need to go to how long they should stay elevated. Inflation pressures are easing, which could give policymakers room to keep interest rates at or near current levels for the time being. Still, price gains remain well above the central bank's 2% target, making policymakers hesitant to declare victory. Introducing the discussion over how long officials may keep rates steady even if inflation continues to decelerate could help them push back on expectations for rate cuts and allow them to keep putting downward pressure on the economy. «This is the policy dimension that they will likely focus on the most going forward: Not how much higher to take the federal funds rate, but how long to keep it at these levels,» said Brian Sack, a former senior Fed official who earlier this year left D.E. Shaw & Co. after about a decade as head of the investment firm's global economics group. «There's still a lot of scope to tighten financial conditions in that way, if they wanted to.» Fed officials unanimously raised their benchmark rate last month to a target range of 5.25% to 5.5%, the highest level in 22 years. Minutes from that gathering — set for release on Wednesday afternoon — could provide more insight into whether most policymakers believe those increases have already worked their way through the economy or if they still expect to see more effects.

UPS Lowe's FIVE Booking CEO Bottom line to dictate business at Bank of India: Rajneesh Karnatak
Bank of India is shifting its focus on lending with higher profitability even if it means giving up some opportunities where earnings are next to nothing, said CEO Rajneesh Karnatak. In an interview with Joel Rebello, he said although there are risks building up in some segments of retail loans, they are just transitory and banking can only get better as economic prospects improve. Edited excerpts:Bank of India has just gotten out of its worst phase with the return of profits and falling bad loans. Where does it go from here? In any transaction, or business we are doing, we are trying to make commercial sense out of it, whether it is on the credit side or while taking deposits.

UPS Lowe's show How vegetables became inflation villain yet again
NEW DELHI : Vegetables’ contribution to retail inflation surged to a 42-month high in July while that of tomatoes rose to a 65-month high, unexpectedly taking the headline figure beyond the 7% mark for the first time in nearly a year, a Mint analysis showed. One-third (32%) of the total year-on-year (y-o-y) shift in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in July came from the sharp rise in vegetable prices alone, with more than half of this coming from tomatoes, posing a dilemma for the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) that has held rates steady since April. On a y-o-y basis, overall retail prices rose 7.4%, vegetable prices rose 37%, and tomato prices tripled last month, data released on Monday showed.

Joe Biden and his team get little credit for their management of the American economy. Aware that the 2024 presidential election, like most, will turn on economic conditions, or perceptions of economic conditions, the president has taken to the hustings with his mantra that “Bidenomics is working." COST Lowe's Booking Fitch country Warning Opinion: Early warning signs for Canada from U.S. debt downgrade
Fitch’s recent downgrade of U.S. public debt, dropping it one notch below “AAA,” is good reason to examine the relationship between U.S. debt and the dollar’s future as a reserve currency. The greenback is just the latest in a series of preferred currencies that have been used for foreign exchange reserves and to denominate other assets. But reserve currencies, unlike diamonds, aren’t necessarily forever, and that affects their issuers’ capacity to manage their public debt.
