ETMarkets Smart Talk: We are reducing the allocation to mid and small caps while rebalancing gold: Roopali Prabhu
“Gold is an integral part of portfolios due to its lower returns correlation to other asset classes including equities. Tactically too, in our model portfolios, we are reducing the allocation to mid and small caps while rebalancing gold,” says Roopali Prabhu, Head of Products & Solutions, Sanctum Wealth. In an interview with ETMarkets, Prabhu said: “If the risk intensifies in financial markets or geopolitical context, we will probably add some gold to our portfolios” Edited excerpts: Indian market seems to be consolidating after hitting a high in September largely on account of global factors. What is your take? Since the beginning of this US rate hike cycle last year, markets constantly believed that the Fed would not hike as much as they were projecting and instead would cut earlier. However, the Fed followed through on its commentary until the recent hawkish pause. The mixed data coming from the US is now being interpreted as resilience and markets finally are realigning their rate cut expectations closer to those of the Fed.

Do SIP investments in mutual funds offer assured returns?
mutual funds through SIPs with monthly collections surging past the Rs 16,000 crore mark. However, there are still many myths surrounding this mode of investment into risk assets. Do sips offer guaranteed returns? Often illustrations for SIPs show past returns for tenures of 5-10 years, where returns could range between 10% and 20% annualised based on the type of equity fund chosen. However, this does not mean that these returns are guaranteed. Money managers point out that SIPs are merely a mode of investing in mutual funds, where a fixed amount is invested on a particular date every month. About 90% of the SIPs go into equity-oriented mutual funds in which case the money is deployed in the stock markets, which carry a degree of risk and volatility. Since returns from stocks are not guaranteed, consequently returns from SIPs are not guaranteed either. Can sips be done only in equity funds and are they meant only for retail investors? A SIP can be done in any mutual fund scheme — be it equity, debt, gold or an international fund. While a minimum SIP amount in most cases is Rs 500 per month or Rs 1,000 a month, there is generally no upper limit and it can be done even by rich investors. It is a method of investing in mutual funds and imparts discipline while investing; so it can be used by all investors.

Rush for gold cash amid need for cold cash
Gold loan companies are seeing a surge in demand from semiurban and rural areas ahead of the festive season, with small businesses and individuals monetising their holdings to raise funds amid a general credit crunch. The recent rally in gold prices following the developments in West Asia has also made such loans attractive by raising eligibility. “There is completely no fear of Covid in this year’s festive season.

UK regular pay growth slows for first time since January
job vacancies also declined, official figures showed on Tuesday, in a sign that the labour market is losing momentum. British average earnings, excluding bonuses, were 7.8% higher than a year earlier during the three months to August, down from an upwardly revised 7.9% in the three months to July, the first such fall since January. Average earnings are being monitored by the Bank of England as it considers whether to resume raising interest rates to counter the risks from still-high inflation. The latest reading from Britain's Office for National Statistics was in line with expectations from economists polled by Reuters, but sterling fell slightly against the U.S. dollar after the data. «While wage growth is still much too strong for the Bank of England's liking, there's nothing in the latest data that's likely to push the committee into a rate hike at the November meeting,» ING economist James Smith said. Private-sector regular pay — the component looked at most closely by the BoE — saw annual growth slow to 8.0% in the three months to August, from 8.1%. Annual growth in total pay — a more volatile measure which includes one-off bonuses — slowed more than expected to 8.1% in the quarter through August, from an unrevised 8.5% in the May to July period. However, with consumer price inflation of 6.7% in August, the real-terms increase in pay was far smaller. Regular pay, adjusted for CPI inflation, grew by an annual 0.7% in the three months to August.

Four or five days of food left in Gaza shops: WFP
Gaza Strip was worsening, with only four or five days of stocks left in the shops. WFP said stocks were getting low in warehouses inside the Palestinian enclave, but at the shop level, the situation was even more acute. «The situation in Gaza is getting worse by the minute: the humanitarian situation but also of course the food security situation,» WFP's Middle East spokeswoman Abeer Etefa, told reporters at the UN in Geneva via video-link from Cairo. «The current stocks of essential food commodities are sufficient for only two weeks — and that's at the wholesalers' level,» she said, with the warehouses located in Gaza City in the north of the territory and shops having difficulties replenishing supplies. «Inside the shops, the stocks are getting close to less than a few days, maybe four or five days of food stocks left.» Gaza-based Hamas fighters broke through Israel's heavily fortified border on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. Israel has responded with withering air strikes on Hamas-controlled Gaza and by deploying tens of thousands of troops to the border in preparation for a full-scale ground offensive. Israel has demanded that residents of north Gaza leave for the south, hoping to clear the area of civilians in preparation for a perilous urban ground assault. Etefa said that out of five flour mills in the Gaza Strip, only one was operating due to security concerns and the unavailability of fuel. «So the bread supply is running low and people are lining up for hours to get bread,» she said. Only five bakeries out of 23 in Gaza contracted by WFP were still in operation, she added.

RBI may opt to roll over $5-b forex swap
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) could consider rolling over a $5-billion foreign exchange swap set to mature next week as the central bank, which has repeatedly flagged inflationary risks stemming from excess funds with banks, prioritises liquidity management over bolstering forex reserves. Some investors believe that a current deficit in headline liquidity prints and expected currency leakage during the festive season make a case for the RBI to let the swap mature on October 23, potentially leading to an inflow of around ₹40,000 crore in the banking system. However, others pointed out that with core liquidity remaining at a large surplus, the RBI is likely to accord more importance to the battle against inflation, given the central bank's worries about excess cash with banks fuelling consumer price pressures. «After the phasing out of the residual Incremental Cash Reserve Ratio, the core systemic liquidity surplus is currently close to ₹3 trillion, despite headline liquidity oscillating between positive and negative values,» Vivek Kumar, economist, Quanteco Research said. Core liquidity accounts for the government's cash balances, which cyclically flow in and out of the banking system. «With the government running down its surplus cash position in the coming months, headline liquidity would get a boost.
