Chip(per) ambitions: Why India needs its wafer fabs
made-in-India’ chip from the Micron plant is expected in December 2024. This is significant, as chip shortages during the global pandemic lockdowns heightened realisation of India’s dependency on international supply chains. While the start seems promising, the odds appear to be stacked against India, for now at least.

Market has to consolidate till April to have a pre-election rally in May: Sandip Sabharwal
Sandip Sabharwal, asksandipsabharwal.com, says “it is important for the froth to go out because there was too much speculation happening in too many segments and although optically the index has hardly fallen, when we talk of the correction on the largecap side the index, there is hardly any fall – 2% off the top. But the real pain has been on the smallcaps and to some extent on midcaps. I would think that valuations in that segment are still somewhat higher. I do not think the entire correction should be over as of now.” Sabharwal further says he is still sitting on 12-15% cash, waiting to see where the entire dust settles because «we have had a correction but there could be some more way to go.» Are we in for a pre-election rally? History tells us that markets in the run-up to the election have rallied. Will 2024 be different? Sandip Sabharwal: It could be different because we have already had a decent size run-up, so if you look at it, one month prior to election is one thing but starting right from October till now, the markets have had a sharp run-up and globally also markets are looking a bit jittery with inflation being sticky and there have been possibilities of a global correction.

India Playbook 2024 – the India defence equity market story
geopolitical risk globally which is leading to higher defense budgets b) Indian government policy of “AtmaNirbhar” or depending on self for ones’ requirement and hence domestic manufacturers getting a higher market share in the Country’s capex spent c) The companies now have strong longer term Order books, a good return ratios and promising profit outlook. How has India fared against its global peers? The equity markets world over have been very strong and polarized with the best performing market being Nikkei (Japan) up 16% in just ~75 days in 2024 and MSCI China down 2% a huge differential of 18% for the investor. The Indian market despite being expensive on a relative market seems to be going from strength to strength, with MSCI India up 6%, in line with MSCI World. The mid and smaller cap indices have started showing clinks in their armor, especially small cap which is flat CYTD underperforming the broader indices. This could be largely due to the stupendous performance of 54% in the last year for small cap and 6-0% for midcaps and profit booking.

Investment cycle, not quarterly earnings to drive volume growth going forward: Mayur Patel
Mayur Patel, Fund Manager, 360 ONE Asset, says “if somebody is willing to take a slightly long-term view, then the equity market outlook seems positive despite premium valuations. In the short term, the risk has gone up manifold in the small and midcap space and that is where we do see material downside in the short to medium term.” After the last two-three very good years, now the market is giving some kind of reality check to the investors which were spoilt by very handsome returns, in largecaps, midcaps and smallcap. Now things are looking slightly shaky for a variety of factors. Are your conversations capturing all of that? Mayur Patel: The equity market performance is never linear and predicting short-term performance is a futile exercise. So, instead we assess the risk-reward by evaluating the price-to-book valuation of the market vis-a-vis fundamental factors.
