Curry Tales: How impoverished sailors & indentured workers gave birth to uber-spicy diaspora cuisine
Indian restaurant abroad, taken a bite and thought, “Wow, that’s really spicy!” This can just be the sharp contrast, if it’s in a country where the other food we’ve been eating has been bland. But Indian restaurants abroad can be surprisingly spicy, in ways we don’t expect with our home food. This is true of British curry houses, with their curries ranked by hotness, from mildKormas to medium-hot Madras, hotter Vindaloo and painfully hot Phaal (an invented term).

Year-ender 2023: Who all moved my stocks in a record-breaking year?
The year started on a negative note as the equity bulls were nearly thrashed out by the bears. But the bulls picked themselves up from the ground and the run that they began in March was simply unstoppable. This tug-of-war between the bulls and the bears on Dalal Street was influenced by a zillion factors that unfolded during the course of the year. In this special year-ender 2023 section, ETMarkets has tried and wrapped all of those events. So, let’s do a recap of all of those movers and shakers on D-Street. January Just when investors were grappling with a high inflation and interest rate situation, US-based Hindenburg Research on January 25, threw a fireball on D-Street through a 106-page report filled with allegations against the Adani Group. The short seller accused the group of financial forgery, corporate misgovernance, stock price rigging, and highly leveraged balance sheets.

OMCs a short-term play; beware of froth in IPO market: Nitin Raheja
Nitin Raheja, ED, Julius Baer Wealth Advisors, says “OMCs are short-term tactical plays and that is how we look at them. If in the next couple of months, before the election code comes into play, crude remains benign, then they will be good, in fact, for a good part of the next year. But fundamentally, the fact that they do not really have complete freedom and there is interference from the government and the ministry, means they can’t be long-term strategic compounders.” This year has been marked by the comeback of the oil and gas PSUs. What is your take on this because there was always a regulatory overhang which challenged the institutional investors not to participate in these stocks in a big way. Do you think some of those worries are getting abated now? Nitin Raheja: I do not think so. I do not see anything which has significantly changed from a regulatory perspective. These are good short-term tactical plays. OMCs are benefitting from the fact that crude has remained relatively benign, so they have not faced those pressures. If in the next couple of months, before the election code comes into play, crude remains benign, then they will be good, in fact, for a good part of the next year. But fundamentally, the fact that they do not really have complete freedom and there is interference from time to time from the government and the ministry do not make them long-term strategic compounders. They are good short-term plays that is how we look at it.

Ukraine detains defence official of embezzling USD 40mn in artillery deal
Ukrainian Defence Ministry has been apprehended on charges of embezzling USD 40 million (1.5 billion Ukrainian hryvnia) related to a contract for artillery shells, CNN reported the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). The SBU alleged that the official, in December of the previous year, entered into an agreement with a specialised export company for the procurement of a substantial batch of artillery shells. Subsequently, a more advantageous contract for the supply of these shells, excluding intermediaries, thereby reducing delivery time and costs, was later signed with the same manufacturer, CNN reported. According to the SBU, the defence official extended the original, costlier contract, resulting in the transfer of funds amounting to USD 40 million to the accounts of a connected foreign intermediary firm. The SBU claimed that it is in possession of documents substantiating these illicit activities, with the accused facing a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years if proven guilty. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has initiated efforts to recover the misappropriated funds.

Capital formation, manufacturing & payments to benefit from past reforms: Santosh Kumar Singh
Santosh Kumar Singh, Fund Manager, Motilal Oswal AMC, says “I still find IT very attractive, I am very bullish on capital markets and I think that the biggest financialisation is going to get played through the capital markets. Also, health has been a place where the market has been very, very bearish for multiple reasons. I think it is a space which has got very high longevity. And at the same time, this is a space where the competitive edges of the company can stay for a very long period of time. So yes, those are the two spaces I am really liking.” Talk to us about the valuation of the market. What went through your mind when you were looking at the screen the day before yesterday? All of us thought that the much-awaited correction, cleansing of froth would happen. But we barely corrected for a day and everything came back? Santosh Kumar Singh: Yes, so see if I am looking at the market, it seems the valuation is inching closer to one standard deviation on the Nifty side, right. And that is where my view is. Above that, I do not see a re-rating. Above that, a lot of froth starts to pick in so I am not expecting it to go above that. That is where the EPS growth of the market comes into play. The EPS growth seems to be doing okay, around 13-14% EPS growth for the next couple of years. So the market may give that sort of return.

They cite the conflict over reservations in Manipur and the substance abuse problem among Punjab’s youth as examples of how these frustrations are being channelled.
