S&P revises India's FY24 growth upwards to 6.4%
India’s growth forecast for FY24 upward to 6.4% from 6% projected earlier, bringing it in line with RBI’s estimate of 6.5%. The American rating agency, however, lowered the FY25 growth estimate by 0.5 percentage points to 6.4%. It expects the economy to bounce back to 7% growth in FY26 and FY27. The upward revision by the global rating agency follows a similar revision by the International Monetary Fund, which revised India’s growth forecast for FY24 upward to 6.3% in October from 6.1% projected earlier and brings it on par with World Bank (6.3%) and ADB (6.3%). Indian economy likely grew better than expected at 6.7% in the second quarter of FY24, according to a median of an ET poll of 10 economists, compared with 6.5% projected by RBI.

Salt in Batteries: Battery giants invest in Sodium-based technology, signalling potential disruption in industry
Battery giants are starting to put their money on new sodium-based technology, a sign that there could be yet another shakeup in the industry that’s crucial for the energy transition. Sodium — found in rock salts and brines around the globe — has the potential to make inroads into energy storage and electric vehicles because it’s cheaper and far more abundant than lithium, which currently dominates batteries. But while chemically and structurally similar, sodium has yet to be used on a large scale, partly due to the better range and performance of similarly sized lithium cells. That could be about to change.

Indian exporters cautiously watching respiratory illness in China; say cause of concern if spreads more
They said that the present situation is not alarming but if the illness spreads to other parts of the globe, it will have an impact on world trade as China is a hub of global manufacturing and exports. The government on November 24 stated that India is prepared for any kind of exigency that may emerge from the current influenza situation in China and it is monitoring the outbreak of H9N2 and clusters of respiratory illness in children in that country. There is a low risk to India from the avian influenza, H9N2, cases reported in China as well as the clusters of respiratory illness, the Union health ministry has said. Some media reports indicated a clustering of cases of respiratory illness in children in northern China for which the World Health Organization (WHO) has also issued a statement. Leading leather exporter and Farida Group Chairman Rafeeq Ahmed said: “We are cautiously watching the situation. If the diseases spread, it will have an impact on trade”. Sharing similar views, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Director General Ajay Sahai said: “We are definitely concerned and most of the things depend on its spread.

Soliders getting killed in Rajouri, PM taking Tejas sortie: Asaduddin Owaisi
All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a sortie in Tejas when «soldiers were getting killed» in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district. Owaisi's attack came after PM Modi flew a sortie in the indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured Tejas Twin Seat Light Combat Fighter aircraft in Bengaluru on Saturday. Owaisi, who was addressing an election campaign gathering in Hyderabad, said, «It's crazy of Prime Minister that he is taking a joy ride in a fighter jet… Jets are of the country… when soldiers are getting killed in Rajouri,» said Owaisi on Saturday. Five soldiers, including two Army captains, lost their lives in the encounter that broke out between terrorists and a joint team of the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Bajimaal area of Rajouri district on Wednesday.

retail investors are late to the party. Many times, their entry is seen as an indication of the peak of an ongoing rally in the stock market. However, the upswing in mid-cap and small-cap stocks is all initiated and funded by retail money.

Businesses should be profitable from point of view of financial returns as well as impact on society: Jamshyd Godrej, Godrej & Boyce
Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman & MD, Godrej & Boyce, says: “Our vision is to grow 10-12% a year. That is our long term average growth. That has been that way and will stay that way, we hope. We see that all businesses should be profitable from the point of view of not just financial returns, but also from their impact on society. And I think that as we go along, we have to keep on being innovative. You cannot have a thriving company without having innovative products and innovative people. That is at the core of it. But at the same time, you have to be sustainable also. So this confluence of innovation and sustainability is really what is crucial.” First off, you are most passionate on the topic of the environment. There are certain initiatives that Godrej & Boyce has started. I would like you to talk to us a little bit about your environmental initiatives. You said that ESG as a word is clubbed together and misused in a lot of ways. A little bit on that front as well. Environmental issues have been very close to the family for generations now.

Using current rally to shift more into largecaps and to fully deploy new cash: Jigar Mistry
Jigar Mistry, Co-founder, Buoyant Capital, says “if you look at the ownership spectrum of largecap versus smallcaps and look at the free float as an additional variable into this, very interesting data is shaping up. There are a few graphics running there but if you look at the free float ownership in the largecaps, FIIs are the predominant investors with almost 42% of the ownership in free float largecaps. But if you look at smallcaps, retail ends up owning 49%.” On Friday, largecaps were pretty quiet but that had been the story for the last few weeks. How are you analysing the construct of the market right now? See, it is an interesting time because if you look at India from a slightly longer term perspective, it looks like it is not just the fundamentals that are reasonably good but we will eventually end up attracting a lot of flows as well.

IT's not all: MNCs engineer shift in offshore hiring
India will likely give rise to job opportunities for mechanical, electrical and electronics engineers in the coming years, experts said. Manufacturers expected to be at the forefront of this job creation include Mercedes Benz, Bosch, Michelin, ABB, Boeing, Airbus, Renault, Volkswagen Group, Schneider Electric, John Deere, Caterpillar, Continental and Collins Aerospace, according to consultants and industry experts. Some engineering college professors said however that cutting-edge roles may not be part of this trend, besides which automation could take a toll. Several MNCs have been shipping out research, design and engineering jobs to India, marking a shift in the profile of offshored jobs from the traditional IT and shared services support to engineering and technical or product-related roles, the experts said.

Indian bowlers look for improved outing against Australia in second T20I
Thiruvananthapuram: The young Indian bowling unit will have to push behind the timid show in the series opener and find its flow against a forceful Australian batting line-up in the second T20 here on Sunday. India had won the first game at Visakhapatnam by two wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, but their bowlers, except pacer Mukesh Kumar, looked incapable of stemming the run-flow. The pitch and conditions at the Greenfield International Stadium will not be massively different, and that makes it imperative for the Indian bowlers to fire collectively.
