Sale of luxury vehicles sees 38% jump YoY in June, much ahead of overall automobile sales growth
According to industry estimates, about 20,000 luxury vehicles were sold between January and June — a 38% jump over 14,500 units sold in the same period a year ago. Strong consumer demand, especially at the top end of the market, and healthy order books across manufacturers will help sustain momentum through the year and push overall volumes past the pre-pandemic peak of 40,000 units in 2018, senior industry executives told ET. Meanwhile, overall passenger vehicle sales rose by about 10% to over 2 million units in the first half of 2023.

Havells plans to foray into manufacturing for overseas brands
Havells India is going to venture into electronic manufacturing service (EMS) or contract manufacturing space for appliances such as air-conditioners and washing machines to cater to the increased demand of global brands to have an Indian manufacturing base, said chairman and managing director Anil Rai Gupta. On a pilot basis, the company has already started manufacturing and product designing of air-conditioners for some of the global brands in markets like the Middle East and the US. Gupta said since Havells is investing heavily into building manufacturing lines and capacities for appliances for its own brand Lloyd, it will utilise the spare capacity for contract manufacturing for brands sold overseas. «We want to cater to China plus-one manufacturing strategy of global brands. We will only manufacture for brands sold overseas since we don't want such products to compete with our own Lloyd brand of appliances. We are also designing the products to ensure they meet the norms of these markets,» said Gupta. Gupta said the company is targeting Rs 1,000 crore revenue from contract manufacturing over the next 3-4 years. He said Havells has started with AC for such manufacturing since it has already built a plant of global standard and has excess capacities. Next will be the washing machine for which it has set up a plant. «As and when we set up plants for manufacturing our own products, we will start contract manufacturing,» he said.

Prices of SUVs and MPVs to go up 2% following the GST cess increase
GST Council increasing the cess by 200 basis points from the current 20 per cent to 22 per cent. Under the current GST structure, bigger UVs are levied with GST rate of 28 per cent and cess up to 22 per cent. The hybrid UV has a cess rate of 15 per cent, followed by two cess slabs of 20per cent and 22per cent respectively. With the change in GST rate of bigger UVs (either petrol or diesel) will be levied with the highest cess rate of 22 per cent if a vehicle meets any of the following three specifications—first, unladen (without passenger weight) ground clearance of 170mm-- earlier this condition was on laden basis (with passenger weight), it is now unladen, second length more than 4 meter and lastly, over 1500cc engine capacity. In addition, the condition popularly known as SUV has also been removed. This would mean all bigger SUV/MPV which are attracting 20 per cent cess rate so far will have cess rate of 22 per cent. This would mean SUV/MPV prices are likely to increase by 2per cent. It’s not immediately clear which UV models would attract a higher cess as the specification published in the company’s sale brochure is different from the specification during the vehicle homologation. Homologation is a government issued certificate that allows a product to enter a market. The GST council goes with specification shared by the manufacturer during homologation.
