In 2021, the world experienced both the rise and fall of GameFi, with popular games including Decentraland, Sandbox and Axie Infinity enabling players to earn in a new standard for gameplay.

Web3 projects are the talk of the current digital scene, with thousands of new companies coming to life every day in an attempt to ride out this global wave with their own product releases. Unfortunately, reality has shown most of these offerings do not provide any tangible value to their player or user bases. Instead, they rely on superficial hype of cryptocurrencies, NFTs and related buzzwords, a seemingly unnatural method to pursue user growth. At present, these efforts result in short-term successes and not sustainable growth.

The appeal of blockchain-based gaming is clear: participate in activities you might have already been doing and make some money at the same time in a realm constructed by tokenized and tradable items. While attractive in theory, the reality is that these models cater to those with a familiarity with nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and surrounding technologies. NFTs can be exotic and dangerous beasts.

The HBAR Foundation, a not-for-profit independent organization of distributed ledger firm Hedera Hashgraph, has announced the establishment of a $250 million dollar metaverse fund to drive consumer brand adoption of tokenized Web3 applications.

Blockchain-based games are still yet to take the world by storm. Big developers are testing the waters, and the smaller teams have yet to master a successful project. With little familiarity, many games still focus on the nonfungible token (NFT) component more than the gameplay itself, with many releases being as simple as pet breeding or other character collectibles. Consequently, if you remove NFTs from new project releases, games will have no leg to stand on due to the lack of intelligible gameplay.
