India and Russia eye dynamic rupee-rouble rate, vostro balance to bypass dollar trade barriers
Russia are exploring the idea of a dynamic reference rate to start a rupee-rouble market, along with allowing greater deployment of the rupee balance that has accumulated in course of trade between the two countries since outbreak of the Ukraine war. A reference or exchange rate is aimed at overcoming the dollar trade barriers raised by US sanctions imposed on Russia in February 2022. These, along with putting in place a payment confirmation mechanism, are expected to figure during a meeting of senior central bank officials and bankers in Moscow this week, two industry persons told ET. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently took feedback from banks and financial institutions dealing with Russian funds registered in India.

How to pick sectoral and thematic funds: Key things you need to keep in mind while investing in mutual funds
Don’t go by past returns Our cover story explains why investing on the basis of past returns is not a good idea. This is especially true in case of sectoral and thematic funds. Sectors and themes tend to be cyclical in nature, and the performance depends on a host of factors, including news developments, economic conditions, global trends, government policies and market sentiments. For instance, the pharma sector was the top performer after the Covid outbreak in 2020, but it was the worst performer in 2021 and gave negative returns the next year. “That’s how cyclicality plays out,” says Chirag Muni, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth.

What is Nipah Virus that killed 14-year-old Kerala boy — symptom, risks, causes and Centre's advisory to state
Fruit bats are the usual reservoir of the virus, and humans can become infected by accidentally consuming bat-contaminated fruits. When the first outbreak was recognised in Malaysia and Singapore, most human infections had resulted from direct contact with sick pigs or their contaminated tissues. "Transmission is thought to have occurred via unprotected exposure to secretions from the pigs, or unprotected contact with the tissue of a sick animal," the WHO said.Later, the outbreaks in Bangladesh and India was most likely caused by consumption of fruits or fruit products contaminated with urine or saliva from infected fruit bats.Human-to-human transmission of the Nipah virus has also been reported among families and caregivers of infected patients.
