NCR residents look for second home in the hills to escape smog
National Capital Region. Builders and brokers in cities like Dehradun, Kasauli, Rishikesh, Nainital and Shimla said many from NCR's middle-class, who cannot afford a luxury second home, have approached them in the past few days looking for properties that fit into their budgets. «The rising demand for second homes in serene locations like Kasauli and Rishikesh is a direct result of increasing pollution levels in the NCR. Homebuyers are seeking refuge in these destinations, drawn by their clean air, natural beauty, and peaceful environments,» said Amar Kapoor, founder of Terra Grande by Eldeco Group, which is developing vacation homes at Kasauli and Rishikesh.

High pollution may boost demand for respiratory drugs
air pollution continues to wreak havoc, the respiratory segment is expected to grow further in the coming months. While the domestic pharma market is largely driven by anti-diabetics and cardiac therapies, respiratory therapies are expected to lead the growth in November, December and January, pharma experts said. According to market research firm Pharmarack, the respiratory segment is valued at ₹16,413 crore, growing at a compound annual rate of 12%. The anti-asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) products have grown from ₹6,094 crore MAT (moving annual turnover) value in October 2021 to ₹9,960 crore in October 2024. Likewise, the cough and cold market has grown from ₹2,926 crore MAT value to ₹4,129 crore during the same period. «The respiratory market shows the normal seasonal trend for the anti-asthma and cough and cold segment,» said Sheetal Sapale, VP, commercial, Pharmarack. «There were fewer reported cases in October 2024 compared to October 2023, hence there is de-growth in the market. The market peaks in December and January and then gradually subsides as winter loses its intensity,» Sapale said.

Faf du Plessis, who led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for three IPL seasons from 2022 to 2024, was not retained by the franchise for the upcoming league. This places du Plessis alongside Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul in the pool for the IPL mega auctions. Andy Flower, RCB's head coach, acknowledged du Plessis's contributions. «Last year, Faf's captaincy and leadership — in what was a really tough season, particularly in the first half — was sensational,» Flower said. «He led the revival that took us into the finals.»

TCIL may sell 15% stake in Bharti Hexacom in two or more tranches
TCIL) is likely to sell its remaining 15% share in Bharti Hexacom in multiple tranches for a windfall income. «The government is considering selling out 15% share in Bharti Hexacom in two or more tranches to maximise the proceeds.Decision not to sell the complete stake in one go previously helped the government to maximise its return by more than 60% over its target value of Rs 9,500-crore. Selling the balance stake in multiple tranches will further enhance value maximization for the government,» a senior Department of Telecommunications (DoT) official told ET. In April this year, the public sector firm sold 15% equity of the total 30% it had in Sunil Mittal-driven Bharti's unit Bharti Hexacom that fetched Rs 4,275-crore to the state exchequer at Rs 570 per share.

"I have not the read HC order": CM Sukhu on Himachal Bhawan attachment order
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday said he has not yet seen the High Court's decision to attach Himachal Bhawan in Delhi but has taken information regarding it and will review the order. Speaking to reporters, Sukhu said, «I have not read the High Court order but the upfront premium is based on a policy under which when the energy policy was made in 2006, I was the main architect. We had kept a reserve price per megawatt on which the companies had bid. There was a decision made by arbitration in the matter of upfront premium...Our govt went to the High Court against the arbitration order and the government had to deposit Rs 64 crore in arbitration. I have taken information regarding the same and we will study about this type of order.» The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Monday passed an order to attach the Himachal Bhavan in Delhi's Mandi House after the Congress-led Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government failed to clear overdue electricity bills.

EU softens stand on major sticking point in Baku climate talks
BAKU: The European Union on Monday urged «wealthier high-emitting» developing nations to voluntarily contribute to climate finance, signalling a shift from its earlier position that had stalled progress in the UN climate talks. Securing a new climate finance package to help developing countries reduce emissions and adapt to climate change is the top priority of this year's UN climate talks. Developing nations need at least $1.3 trillion annually to tackle worsening climate impacts. The EU and some developed countries argue that such a large sum can only be achieved if «wealthier high-emitting» developing nations, like China and Gulf states, also contribute. However, this proposal has been a major sticking point, as many developing countries view it as an attempt to shift responsibility away from those who historically benefited from industrialisation. European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, suggested a compromise on Monday, proposing voluntary contributions from these nations without changing the traditional classification of developed and developing countries.

COP29 looks at G20 outcome to get a breakthrough on climate finance
BAKU: With no much headway on the critical issue of climate finance at UN climate talks COP29 here, negotiators of 198 countries appear to be looking at any big signal from the G20 summit in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, where heads of state/government of rich nations and emerging economies are brainstorming on multiple issues, including climate and renewable energy. «We urge them to use the G20 meeting to send a positive signal of their commitment to address the climate crisis. We want them to provide clear mandates to deliver at COP29,» said COP29 president Mukhtar Babayev. At a press conference, he did not mince words while speaking on how important the G20 was for the success of COP29 when the big stake issue of climate finance continues to elude the convergence point among rich and developing countries. «We cannot succeed without them (G20 nations), and the world is waiting to hear from them… They account for 85% of global GDP and 80% of emissions,» said Babayev.

New-age companies seek growth areas as urban consumption slump grips
new-age companies in sectors such as beauty, wearables, logistics, ecommerce and used-car sales, which are now seeking to ramp up growth by focusing on new areas of business. Delhivery chief executive Sahil Barua flagged the slowdown in broader consumption, telling analysts during the firm’s earnings call last week that the trend has now trickled to ecommerce. To counter tepid demand, the logistics firm is attempting to chase new growth areas such as quick-commerce, regional and air logistics. The slump has exposed pain points for multiple new-age beauty brands. Mamaearth posted a loss in its second quarter, even as its stock hit a 52-week low on Monday reacting to the weak results. The Gurugram-based brand, which is undergoing a restructuring of its offline supply chain, said it was clocking slower-than-expected growth and that it needed to recalibrate the strategy for its flagship brand to grow.
