Pvt investments need to gather more steam
NEW DELHI : The growth in private investments in fixed assets cooled in 2022-23 after a rebound in the year before when it recovered from a pandemic-induced contraction, official data showed. Unless exports revive and wage growth fuels domestic consumption, private investments may not improve in the coming year either. Private investments in fixed assets rose 6.4% in real terms in 2022-23 to ₹19.7 trillion at 2011-12 prices, after a 16.4% growth in 2021-22.

WHO), India is firming up its own pandemic preparedness programme which will lay out a blueprint for surveillance, risk assessment and mobilisation of resources to effectively tackle any pandemic outbreak in the country. The NITI Aayog, in consultation with the health and family welfare ministry and other stakeholders, will submit a comprehensive programme by the middle of this year, aimed at containing the spread of any pandemic in future and restricting the loss of lives as had happened during Covid-19, a senior government official told ET on condition of anonymity. Health a glaring hole in election discourse, say experts
medical emergencies, but as India gears up for the Lok Sabha polls, health remains conspicuously absent from the election discourse, feel experts. Not only are most parties seemingly uninterested in prioritising commitments on health in their poll agenda, even the voter on the street appears to be unaware of healthcare rights, the public health experts say. The result is that election after election, medical infrastructure and services leave a lot to be desired. «Public health issues have traditionally not been a prominent poll agenda in India due to various factors. The most vocal sections of society 'the educated middle class' often do not access public health services, instead preferring the private sector. Hence, demands to improve government health services are not raised strongly,» Dr Abhay Shukla, national co-convenor of Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, told PTI.

Revenge-spending Indians drank and dined after being cooped up in covid years
NEW DELHI : Indians spent liberally on dining at hotels and restaurants and on alcohol in 2022-23 while going easy on clothing, food and non-alcoholic beverages, clearly marking out their preferences emerging from two years of pandemic lockdowns. Growth in private final consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages slowed to 6.2% in FY23 from 6.6% in the year before, show the government’s PFCE data released on Thursday. Private final consumption expenditure is defined as the expenditure incurred by households on final consumption of goods and services, and is reflective of the broader household demand in the country.
