Liquidity and tax implications should be key factors for investing in any instrument: Shweta Rajani
Shweta Rajani, Head-Mutual Fund, Anand Rathi Wealth, says “any capital asset that you have held and sold like real estate, depending on the holding period will be categorised under short-term or long-term capital gain. You could have had unlisted equity or listed equity that made any gains on that. You could have debt mutual funds, you could have some bonds that you have sold. So, again, listed bonds or unlisted bonds – either way – will again come under the head of capital gains. So, a simple definition is any capital assets sold will have an implication of capital gains.” Let us start by talking about the role that taxation plays in one's investment decision-making process and to what extent investors must be wary of tax when they are deciding where they want to invest and where they want to park their money. Shweta Rajani: Since we are talking about tax and investments, both are actually interrelated. When you are taking your investment decisions, one of the factors that one must look at would be taxation. So, generally when we are looking at our investment opportunities, we would look at what can be the return expectation, what is the time horizon, what is the risk factor. Like that, I think liquidity and tax implications should be one key factor for determining whether you should invest in that instrument or not. So, it should be, a key selection criteria, while it should not be the only selection criteria.

Bengaluru tech belt hit by double whammy of water supply crisis and rising demand due to work from office rules
flash floods, tech parks in Bengaluru are now gearing up to face a severe water shortage crisis, months before peak summer. With work-from-office enforced by most corporations, demand for water in these areas is higher than last year, at a time when weak southwest monsoon has created a drought situation across most of Karnataka. The $245 billion IT industry has seen top companies including TCS, Infosys and Wipro calling people to “return-to-office” for a minimum of around 3-5 days a week. Bangalore Apartments' Federation General Secretary Vishnu Gattupalli told ET that tanker water supply is not enough to meet the needs of the employees who have returned from their hometowns, tech offices, and residents in the ‘Silicon Valley’s’ tech belt. Residents of areas like Whitefield, Mahadevpura and RR Nagar – home to companies like Infosys, Wipro, IBM, Tech Mahindra – have been advised to ration the water they have and use it judiciously, he added. While the median tanker rate is Rs 131 per 1000 litres, the price climbs up along the city’s tech belt, with areas like Horamavu paying Rs 207 per 1000 litres and RR Nagar residents paying Rs 238 per 1000 litres, according to a survey by the Federation.

Savvy Group emerges highest bidder to develop GIFT City’s largest commercial project
real estate developer Savvy Group has emerged as the highest bidder to develop the GIFT Special Economic Zone’s largest commercial and recreational project, including an innovation and startups hub, spread over a total 2.8 million sq ft with a total investment of over Rs 1,200 crore. The company has pipped three other bidders to bag the proposed project that surpasses all existing developments within the GIFT City, which previously boasted the largest development covering a million sq ft. This is the first project conceived by the GIFT City authority following the recent declaration by the Gujarat government to grant an exemption to GIFT City from a long-standing liquor prohibition law dating back 63 years. This exemption aims to bolster the city's appeal to foreign corporations, encouraging increased investment in the region.

Forest n. large area covered with trees
Forest (Conservation) Act (FCA) 1980, a Supreme Court bench earlier this week stated that states and UTs must go by the 'dictionary definition' of 'forest' — all statutorily recognised forests, whether designated as reserved, protected or otherwise — to determine whether any work can be approved on a land. Crucially, it directed GoI to get information from states regarding lands identified as forests based on lexical interpretation, as outlined in the 1996 Godavarman ruling, and that no zoos or safari parks can be set up in such areas without the court's nod. The 1996 ruling expanded the definition of forests beyond those notified or recorded officially.
