Elon Musk’s Neuralink now accepting Canadian patients
Elon Musk‘s brain computer interface (BCI) company Neuralink is now accepting patient applications from Canadians interested in receiving the experimental assistive technology. The inclusion of Canadians comes as the startup is facing criticism from a U.S. lawmaker who has accused the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of failing to properly inspect Neuralink prior to human trials.Already, one American man has had the “cosmetically invisible” computer chip inserted into his brain.

Seeing a doctor doesn’t have to be so frustrating
Why is it so frustrating to see a doctor these days—and can anything be done to make it easier? Despite years of efforts to improve efficiency and access, wait times to see a doctor have only gotten worse, amid a shortage of physicians in almost every specialty. One survey found the average time to secure a new-patient appointment is approaching one month in 15 of the largest cities in the U.S., and another survey found more than a third of Medicare patients are waiting more than a month to see a doctor. At least half of patients report experiencing “operational friction"—long hold times on the phone to reach a scheduler, difficulty getting a timely appointment and trouble accessing follow-up information, according to surveys from patient-experience firm Press Ganey.

Lung cancer: ICMR invites researchers to conduct meta-analyses for evidence-based guidelines
ICMR) has invited expressions of interest from researchers to conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses for generating evidence pertaining to lung cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, management and palliation. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses play a crucial role in synthesizing existing evidence to inform decision-making in the management of lung cancer to guide clinical practice and improve patient outcomes. «Lung cancer is one of the commonest cancers in India and its incidence is rising every year. It accounts for 10 per cent of the total cancer deaths in the country. Currently, evidence-based guidelines do not exist with respect to its prevention, screening, diagnosis, management and palliation in India,» the ICMR said. Systematic review teams will be commissioned to conduct rigorous evaluations of the available literature on specific 30 review questions identified by the Guideline Development Group of lung cancer guidelines.

South Korea's medical professors join protests, reduce hours in practice
South Korea said they will cut back on the hours they spend in practice starting on Monday to support trainee doctors on strike for more than a month over a government plan to boost medical school admissions. «It is clear that increasing medical school admissions will not only ruin medical school education but cause our country's healthcare system to collapse,» Kim Chang-soo, the president of the Medical Professors Association of Korea, told reporters.

Israel besieges two more Gaza hospitals, demands evacuations, Palestinians say
Israeli forces besieged two more Gaza hospitals on Sunday, pinning down medical teams under heavy gunfire, the Palestinian Red Crescent said, and Israel said it had captured 480 militants in continued clashes at Gaza's main Al Shifa hospital. Israeli forces say hospitals in the Palestinian enclave where war has been raging for over five months have frequently been used as strongholds of Hamas militants harbouring bases and weapons. Hames and medical staff deny this. The Palestinian Red Crescent said one of its staff was killed when Israeli tanks suddenly pushed back into areas around Al-Amal and Nasser hospitals in the southern city of Khan Younis, amid heavy bombardment and gunfire.

Every penny paid on time, FM Nirmala Sitharaman hits back as Karnataka moves SC seeking drought relief
Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday asserted every penny that was due to Karnataka from the Union Government had been paid on time, a day after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced moving the Supreme Court over the “five-month delay” in the release of drought relief. The FM, who represents Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha, rejected Karnataka’s charge of fiscal bias against the Centre, speaking at an interaction organized by Thinkers Forum in Bengaluru. “The claim that Rs 5,495 crore as a special grant was not released for Karnataka is totally false. The Finance Commission, in its final report, did not recommend any such special grants.”

Elon Musk's Brain Chip: User posts on X by 'thinking' after Neuralink implant
Elon Musk's brain-chip start-up Neuralink's human trials has said that he posted on the social media site by "thinking". "Twitter banned me because they thought I was a bot, @X and @elonmusk reinstated me because I am," wrote 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh. Responding to Arbaugh, Musk confirmed, “First ever post made just by thinking, using the Neuralink Telepathy device!" This comes days after Musk on March 20 said Neuralink had made history by livestreaming its inaugural demonstration of a patient using a brain chip to play online chess.

Inside the operating room: Doctors test a revolutionary brain-computer implant
Jeffrey Keefer lay on an operating table in the oldest hospital in America surrounded by a surgical team, a group of engineers and a gaggle of spectators hoping to witness the early stages of a healthcare revolution. Keefer was undergoing brain surgery to relieve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease—but since his skull would be open for around four hours anyway, he had also agreed to have an experimental device called a brain-computer interface temporarily implanted. The unit, developed by Precision Neuroscience, sat on the surface of Keefer’s brain for 25 minutes, reading his mind.

New blood thinners will prevent blood clots without causing bleeding
A new class of anticoagulant drugs on the horizon is taking fresh aim at one of cardiology’s toughest challenges: how to prevent blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes, without leaving patients at risk of bleeding. At least a half-dozen experimental blood thinners are in development that inhibit a protein called factor XI, one of several blood factors that regulate how the body forms clots. The challenge is this: The body generates two types of clots—good ones that plug holes in blood vessels to stop bleeding caused by external injuries, and bad ones that grow inside arteries and veins.
