The Road to China-Free Supply Chains Is Long. Warning: Legless Lizards Ahead.
Building China-free supply chains is tough. Sometimes it means dealing with lizards that don’t have legs and sands that are radioactive. That is the case with making rare-earth magnets—a powerful piece of tech that is as crucial to jet fighters and wind turbines as it is to smartphones and electric cars.

Sudden corrections lasting weeks can come up any time; some PSU stocks are meme stocks of India: Sandip Sabharwal
Sandip Sabharwal, asksandipsabharwal.com, says “sudden, swift corrections lasting a couple of weeks can come up any time. Markets can never go up in a straight line. So the investment strategy has to be, at this point of time, if you are holding some good stocks, you can keep on holding. If you are holding zero cash, I would say that it is a good strategy to at least have 10-15% cash now so that you can re-deploy as opportunities come up again.” Is it getting too good to be true or perhaps we should not get carried away with the momentum? What is your understanding of the market right now? It depends on the time horizon of the investors. So if it is a very long term, then it is fine. It does not matter. But I think when markets move up so rapidly in such a short period, in every bullish phase, we have seen that markets can correct 4% to 7% at any point of time without any reason so any investor who is getting in today needs to be ready for that.

Rs 4,000 crore a day! FIIs making it a December to remember for Nifty bulls
Sensex beyond the 71,000 mark and making 21,000 the new pincode for Nifty, FIIs (foreign institutional investors) have been pouring in over Rs 3,900 crore daily on an average in December, making the 30-pack index stronger by 4,000 points so far in the month. NSDL data shows that in the first 10 days of the month, FIIs invested Rs 39,260 crore on Dalal Street. And now with the US Fed hinting at 3 rate cuts in 2024, the market could once again see a flood of foreign money chasing Indian stocks in the new year. The sharp uptick in FII flows comes after November's Rs 9,000 crore inflow and non-stop selling in September and October months. «This market has made a high despite the fact that we have yet to see significant FII inflows.

Shining Bright! Metal stocks rally up to 25% in a month. Is the time ripe to buy them?
Metal stocks surged nearly 9% on Thursday amid fall in the dollar index after the US Federal Reserve kept rates unchanged while hinting at least three rate cuts next year. While it was okay to keep a positive view on the sector, a wait-and-watch strategy for now is the road forwards, told an analyst to ET Now. Dollar has declined 2.7% in the last three months, making dollar-priced commodities such as metals a lucrative buy for importers.

Starting out in tech stocks? Start with small tranches within midcap IT, says Mayuresh Joshi
Mayuresh Joshi, Head, Equity Research-India, William O'Neil, says “as metal demand comes back slowly and steadily as far as China is concerned, the expectations of a soft landing in the US, strong recovery signs that we are seeing in Europe and holding out of macros and the expectations of infra spend in India, is expected to keep volumes afloat as far as Indian companies are concerned. With a sharp recovery in LME prices, the large expectation is that operating leverage should start kicking in from the first of the next financial year. It is a pre-emptive move that we are probably seeing on a lot of these counters.” What do you think is aiding the move in metals and is it sustainable? Two-three factors are clearly aiding the kind of growth that is now coming through for the sector as a whole. One, yesterday, Powell statement which is clearly indicating that at some stage in the second half of the next calendar year rate cuts will be a given, that will give a huge boost to the global economy and commodities in general should see a huge comeback.

Keeping 10-15% cash potentially prudent now as opportunities will keep coming: Sandip Sabharwal
Sandip Sabharwal, asksandipsabharwal.com, says “holding some amount of cash is prudent potentially in sectors where the run-up has been too swift or where someone has an overexposure and then wait for some corrections to allocate that. But the overall economic outlook is positive, so we cannot go very hugely into cash. So, maybe a 10-15% cash position could be potentially prudent and then in between, opportunities will keep on coming up because all stocks do not correct at the same time.” It is almost like the market is believing that the next RBI policy will see a rate cut. Is there a correlation? Should one also anticipate a rate easing by the RBI? It looks highly unlikely that we are going to see a rate cut anytime soon. The scenario that is building globally right now is that the rate hike cycle clearly seems to have ended and once that happens, we will see that the dollar index peaks out, flows start into emerging markets, etc. I think that is the phenomenon we would see.

Who is going to win the market race? Valuation or past performance? Nilesh Shah explains
Nilesh Shah, MD, Kotak AMC, says “India today is trading at a premium valuation to others as the Spider Man movie said “with great power comes great responsibilities.” With higher valuation, comes higher expectations. Our headwind will be to deliver on those expectations. We are like Suryakumar Yadav or Virat Kohli, we are supposed to score a century every time we come to bat; a 10-run, 30-run cameo is not good enough.” Just taking a cue from your last tweet, who is going to win the race? Valuation or past performance? That is a very-very tough question.

Quantum computing and the mysteries of "very small things"
quantum mechanics — the theory in physics that describes the behavior of matter and energy at the level of atoms and subatomic particles. Quantum science has also been explained by a U.S. government scientist as the «rules that describe how really small things behave.» This field is full of surprises, even for the experts. Richard Feynman, the late theoretical physicist, Nobel laureate and pioneer of quantum computing, described the field as «peculiar and mysterious to everyone — both to the novice and the experienced physicist,» because it is so different to how people experience and perceive the behavior and properties of larger objects.
