China’s export ban on key minerals may have a silver lining for the US
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. China is the handmaiden to the globe’s energy transition—and will continue to be so once an anti-transition president occupies the White House again next month. After Hunter, Biden mulls 'preemptive pardons' for Anthony Fauci, Liz Cheney amid fears of Trump-led prosecutions
recently issued a «full and unconditional» pardon to his son Hunter Biden for gun crime and tax convictions, a decision that was widely criticised by Republicans and Democrats alike. Biden, who earlier said he would not interfere with the proceedings, said his son was “unfairly prosecuted" by political opponents. This has brought renewed attention to the US Constitution's provision granting the president the authority to offer clemency, a power wielded by every president since George Washington. Biden's senior aides in the White House are now actively considering whether to issue 'preemptive pardons' to certain current and former public officials in the government as fears grow over the possibility of politically motivated prosecutions under Donald Trump’s return to the presidency.

Euro edges higher, but off peaks after French no-confidence vote; US dollar flat
euro rose marginally against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, but came off session highs, after a widely expected collapse of the French government following a no-confidence vote by opposition lawmakers. The greenback, on the other hand, was little changed overall, as the December interest rate cut chances remained on track amid signs that the American economy was slowing.

French government felled in no-confidence vote, deepening political crisis
Far-right and left-wing lawmakers joined forces to back a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Michel Barnier, with a majority 331 votes in support of the motion. Barnier now has to tender his resignation and that of his government to President Emmanuel Macron, making his minority government's three-month tenure the shortest lived in France's Fifth Republic beginning in 1958. He is expected to do so on Thursday morning, French media reported.

Far right leader battling for own survival: Marine Le Pen
Marine Le Pen displayed the influence she wields on France by toppling the government but she is also facing a trial that risks banishing her from politics for good. Le Pen, who took over the far-right mantle from her father Jean-Marie, has over the last decade sought to turn her National Rally (RN) party into an electable force, even if critics still accuse it of being inherently racist. The work of «dediabolisation» («de-demonisation») bore fruit in the snap legislative polls this summer, with the RN emerging as the largest single party in the National Assembly, although without the outright majority it had targeted.

When Pete Hegseth, Trump's defence head pick, shouted ‘kill all Muslims’ on a drunken night out
Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, once shouted at a bar 'kill all Muslims' in a drunken state. The former Fox News host once drunkenly shouted “kill all Muslims!” in the middle of a bar while serving as the president of a veterans’ group, according to a report in The New Yorker. Pete Hegseth was pushed out as the head of two veterans' advocacy organisations amid internal allegations of mismanagement and personal misconduct. The two non-profit advocacy groups — Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America — both led by Hegseth have the recording apart from other evidence of financial mismanagement and inappropriate sexual advances, according to the report. Reacting to the fresh claims, Hegseth's lawyers said these outlandish claims must have come from a «petty and jealous disgruntled former associate».
