Diu eyes a new identity: Goa minus casinos, nightlife
Keen to move beyond its reputation as a weekend escape for drinkers from dry Gujarat, the administration is exploring a dramatic shift: a plan to lease out the 16th-century Portuguese-built Diu Fort for destination weddings and rebranding the beach town as a family-friendly retreat. “Diu will soon be Goa minus the casino and nightlife,” Diu collector Rahul Dev Boora told ET. “Both Diu and Goa share a Portuguese legacy, but for tourists seeking a family getaway, Diu will always have the edge.”

Malegaon blast case: Special NIA judge in transfer list; families of victims urge Bombay HC to retain Judge Lahoti
NIA judge hearing the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, Judge AK Lahoti, has been named in the general transfer list of district judges released by the Bombay High Court. The lawyer representing the families of the blast victims had earlier written to the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, urging his intervention to retain Judge Lahoti in Mumbai. Judge AK Lahoti has been transferred from the Mumbai court to Nashik. The general transfer list released by the Bombay HC names more than 200 district judges. The judges are directed to assume office on June 9, after the court reopens for summer vacation. Earlier, on March 20, the lawyer representing the victims' families wrote to Bombay Chief Justice Alok Aradhe urging his intervention to retain Judge Lahoti, as the arguments on the 2008 Malegaon case are almost over. «The present letter is a sincere request on behalf of the victims to retain the Hon'ble Special Judge Shri A K Lahoti at the Hon'ble City Civil and Sessions Court for Greater Bombay, at Mumbai,» read the lawyer's letter.

Let Donald Trump unleash his tariff blitz, China has already trade-war-proofed its economy
Such conflicts, after all, are counterproductive in the first place. Raising levies on imports simply increases costs for domestic consumers, more than offsetting the benefits that local producers may enjoy from the higher prices they receive from the shift in spending. The best solution is just to stand aloof from this contest of economic self-harm, however much you’re provoked. That’s the case with most economies — but China, which has announced a 34% import tax against all US goods in response to President Donald Trump’s tariff blitz earlier last Wednesday, may be a rare exception. That’s because the world’s biggest manufacturer has spent decades building an economy that’s already largely war-proofed against blowback from its own trade practices. Consider the main items the nations trade with each other. The major products that the US imports from China are mostly things you’ll find in a Walmart Inc., at a shopping mall, or on Amazon.com Inc.: smartphones, computers, games consoles, furniture, toys and clothing. Slap a 54% tariff on these items, as Trump has done, and American consumers are going to notice pretty soon.

Zelensky hails 'tangible progress' from talks with French, UK military chiefs
Zelensky on Saturday hailed «tangible progress» after meeting British and French military chiefs in Kyiv to discuss strengthening the Ukrainian army and ways to support the war-torn country after any end of hostilities with Russia. British Chief of the Defence Staff Tony Radakin and French counterpart Thierry Burkhard on Friday held talks with Zelensky, Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov. Zelensky wrote on social media on Saturday: «There is tangible progress and the first details on how the security contingent of partners can be deployed,» without giving details. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are spearheading European efforts to send a «reassurance force» to Ukraine after any end to the war sparked by Russia's invasion in 2022. Zelensky thanked «the UK and France for their leadership», saying «it is this kind of joint work, when everyone is focused on a strong result, that helps to bring a reliable and lasting peace to Ukraine.»

Kamala Harris’s concession call to Donald Trump was awkward; here’s what they said to each other
2024 election was over, the then vice president Kamala Harris made the tough phone call to president-elect Donald Trump to concede the election. As expected, the call was tense and awkward, but new information from Chris Whipple's upcoming new book 'Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History', highlighted just how uncomfortable the conversation actually was, as per a report. The call was arranged from her Naval Observatory residence in Washington D.C., with her campaign Chief of Staff Sheila Nix and White House Chief of Staff Lorraine Voles, reported Daily Mail. According to Whipple's book, «Nix called the president-elect on her cell phone — but for some reason couldn't merge the call with the vice president's phone. So Voles called Harris on hers — and she and Nix pressed the phones together,» quoted Daily Mail. After Trump picked up the call, Voles told Trump that, «The vice president is on the line,» as quoted in the report.

They figured that Americans still need health care, basic necessities such as food, soap and toilet paper, and electricity to power their homes. Plus the occasional alcoholic or carbonated beverage. Here are some companies that have managed to post gains or minimal losses for the week: Food Food makers, grocery stores, and restaurants all expect to feel an impact from higher costs on imported products. Food, especially at grocery stores, is among the many expenses that can't be completely cut out of a budget and will likely be grudgingly absorbed by people.

Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 now a law after approval by Parliament and President Murmu
President Droupadi Murmu gave her approval on Saturday. This happened just days after both Houses of Parliament passed the Bill following long and heated debates. The Rajya Sabha passed the Bill early Friday morning with 128 votes in favour and 95 against, after almost 12 hours of discussion. The Lok Sabha had already passed it earlier in the week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the new law, calling it a “watershed moment”. He said the waqf system had been lacking in transparency and accountability for a long time. “This legislation will boost transparency and safeguard people’s rights,” he posted on X. The new law aims to improve how waqf properties are managed. It also promises to bring more openness in dealings and ensure that various Muslim groups are represented on waqf boards. Other goals include protecting heritage sites, supporting welfare programmes, and helping marginalised communities, such as Muslim widows and divorcees. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who introduced the Bill, said it would help millions of poor Muslims. He added that it would not interfere with waqf properties. “This legislation is based on extensive stakeholder consultation and incorporates recommendations from the Joint Parliamentary Committee,” he said. He also mentioned that the Central Waqf Council would have 22 members, with no more than four non-Muslims, to keep the council secular but still representative.

India, Sri Lanka sign major defence pact
Modi was also honoured with Sri Lanka's highest civilian award, Mithra Vibhushana, for his exceptional efforts in bolstering the ties between the two nations and highlighting the spiritual and cultural heritage of both countries. New Delhi and Colombo will move strategically closer in terms of joint maritime surveillance, military exercises, and equipment support with the defence agreement. The other MoUs focus on implementing India's UPI payment system in Sri Lanka, enhancing renewable energy trade through a proposed grid connectivity project, and ferry and aviation services to improve people-to-people ties. The Modi and the Lankan President virtually inaugurated the construction of the Sampur solar power project. They also inaugurated the recently completed temperature-controlled warehousing facility at Dambulla, which is possibly the first facility of its kind in the island, and a project for supply of solar rooftop systems to nearly 5,000 religious institutions across Sri Lanka.

Donald Trump tariffs sent US stock market into chaos. Here's how
US stock market has started witnessing a chaos. President Donald Trump's big raise in tariffs has triggered an escalating trade war and sent global markets plummeting. The S&P 500 fell 6 per cent on Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 5.5 per cent and the Nasdaq composite dropped 5.8 per cent. Wall Street went into free fall, following similar collapses in Asia and Europe. For a second straight day, markets plunged, wiping vast sums off investment and retirement portfolios alike. US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned the tariffs were likely to spur «higher inflation and lower growth», as per an AFP report. Losses in US financial markets were estimated at more than $6 trillion since Trump unveiled his «Liberation Day» tariffs. Trump, who unveiled his barrage of import duties against dozens of countries Wednesday, was unrepentant, posting that «my policies will never change,» AFP reported. «This is a great time to get rich,» he wrote.

Takeaways from Trump's move to send Venezuelan migrants in US to prison in El Salvador
Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 law giving him immense powers to deport noncitizens in a time of war. His use of that law was aimed at Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang that he has repeatedly and falsely claimed as part of an invasion of criminal immigrants. Over the next 24 hours, more than 130 Venezuelans were deported to an El Salvadoran prison even as a US judge ordered the planes carrying them to turn around. Here's what you need to know about the situation:
