Hot inflation may put Fed rate cut in thick of election season
Fed won't make its move until after Americans go to the polls. Rate futures markets now show investors see a first rate cut as most likely occurring at the Fed's Sept. 17-18 meeting after data showed inflation through the entire first quarter of 2024 was stiffer than expected and had demonstrably slowed progress on bringing it back to the Fed's 2% target.

Biden says US support for Philippines, Japan defense 'ironclad' amid growing China provocations
Biden said Thursday that U.S. defense commitment to Pacific allies was «ironclad» as he gathered Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House in the midst of growing concern about provocative Chinese military action in the Indo-Pacific. The U.S. and the Philippines have had a mutual treaty in place for more than 70 years. Biden's forceful reinforcement of the American commitment comes in the midst of persistent skirmishes between the Philippine and Chinese coast guards in the disputed South China Sea. «The United States defense commitments to Japan and to the Philippines are ironclad. They're ironclad,» Biden said as he began three-way talks at the White House with Kishida and Marcos. «As I said before, any attack on Philippine aircraft, vessels or armed forces in the South China Sea would invoke our mutual defense treaty.»

"DMK govt sought compensation of Rs 37,000 cr from Centre but...," Udhayanidhi Stalin
Tamil Nadu Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday hit out at AIADMK and BJP government and said that the DMK government sought compensation of Rs 37,000 crore from the Centre when natural disaster Cyclone Michaung struck Tamil Nadu twice in December last year but the Union Government has not released even a single penny. Adressing a roadshow in Kanniyakumari, Udhayanidhi Stalin said, «There was a cyclone in Chennai and even floods in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli. We demanded 37,000 crores as compensation. The Union Government didn't even give a paisa till now.» «You all know how much the cyclone made an impact. During that time then the State Government AIADMK and Union BJP government didn't warn about the cyclone. Many fishermen belonging to Kanniyakumari at that time in the middle of the sea were fishing unaware of the cyclone. Many lost their life and still count missing is not known. At that time our Leader MK Stalin and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came and visited the affected areas. Even PM Modi visited but did not even announce any relief funds. Just not even in helicopter he visited the affected area. Just took pictures with the Helicopter. Till now no funds have been allocated. Do we need such a shameful Union government? The time has come to remove them which is April 19,» he said.

Indian sports fans are flying more to be where the action is
India is a cricket-crazy country and perhaps it's no surprise that bookings are coming in thick and fast for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in the US and West Indies this June. But it's not just cricket. Indian sports fans are travelling the world to watch their favourite sporting events across categories like never before, buoyed by rising disposable incomes, travel companies said. Rajeev Kale, president and country head for holidays, MICE and Visa at Thomas Cook (India), said that besides the demand for the T20 World Cup from both leisure and corporate customers, the company is seeing high interest for Wimbledon in London, as well as Formula One races in Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Bahrain throughout the year. The company's data indicates an uptick of 25-30% in bookings for key global sporting events this year, he said. «Besides corporate incentives, head honchos from India Inc and HNI-UHNI leisure travellers, our data reveals strong demand emerging from younger audiences as well who are keen to tick off their bucket lists,» Kale said.

Economy poised for 8-9% growth, says CII President
India's economy is poised to achieve 8-9% growth, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) president R Dinesh told ET in an interview, highlighting land, labour and manufacturing reforms as the key focus areas for the new government, which he said will also spur private investment. «We should consider establishing a fund to support new-age manufacturing, similar to the Innovation Fund that the government has already announced. This will play a crucial role in scaling up capacity and capability to create larger large-scale Indian manufacturing businesses,» said Dinesh, who is also the executive vice chairman of TVS Supply Chain Solutions. He further advocated a fund to assist micro, small and medium enterprises with operational expenditures, capital spending and green transitions.

Japanese PM Kishida cracks jokes and invokes 'Star Trek' as he and Biden toast US-Japan alliance at state dinner
Kishida cracked jokes and invoked a touchstone of American culture as he quoted from «Star Trek» at Wednesday's state dinner, telling guests at the White House that he hoped the «unshakable relationship» between his country and the U.S. would «boldly go where no one had gone before.» «I would like to propose a toast to our voyage to the frontier of the Japan-U.S. relationship with this word: boldly go,» Kishida said, quoting the iconic opening monologue of the original «Star Trek» series.

Russia switches tactics with attacks on Ukrainian power plants
Russia launched a major missile-and-drone assault on Ukrainian power stations, part of a new campaign to exploit delays in Western aid for Kyiv to press Moscow’s growing advantage in the third year of war. The overnight strikes hit several regions across the country, destroying a power plant in the Kyiv region and inflicting fresh damage on others that had been struck in earlier attacks. Tens of thousands of homes were left without power, according to Ukrainian officials.
