There’s more to UP food beyond peda, barfi, kebab or biriyani
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Now that everyone has said their piece about the absence of galouti kebab, Awadhi biryani and nihari from the Uttar Pradesh government’s new One District One Cuisine (ODOC) list, let me tell you what is truly missing: purpose and context.Any cuisine is defined by a region’s geographical and cultural makeup, its terroir, local produce, cooking methods and consumption patterns, and not a quick list of street foods. And for a state as diverse as Uttar Pradesh, spanning Himalayan foothills, rich Terai forest, the Gangetic plain and the Vindhya hills and plateau, the range of cuisines is wide.

Indian Navy provides critical medical aid to Pakistani crew member on dhow off Oman coast
Pakistani crew member on a fishing vessel off the Oman coast, the Navy said on Sunday. INS Trikand, a mission-deployed stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, on Friday intercepted a distress call from an Iranian dhow Al Omeedi, operating approximately 350 nautical miles east of the Oman coast. The Navy, in a release, said upon investigation, it was found that a crew member of the dhow had sustained severe injuries to his fingers while working on the engine and was in critical condition and that he had been transferred to another dhow, FV Abdul Rehman Hanzia, which was en route to Iran. «Trikand immediately altered her course to provide medical assistance to the injured crew member. The crew of FV Abdul Rehman Hanzia consisted of 11 Pakistani (nine Baloch and two Sindhi) and five Iranian personnel. The injured Pakistani (Baloch) national had suffered multiple fractures and severe hand injuries, resulting in heavy blood loss,» the Navy said. The medical officer of INS Trikand, along with a team comprising MARCOS (Marine Commandos) and the ship's boarding team, boarded the vessel to administer aid, it said. After administering local anaesthesia, the ship's medical team performed suturing and splinting on the injured fingers, and the surgical procedure, which lasted for over three hours, was completed, it said,

Indian seafood exports to face significant pressure due to US reciprocal tariffs, says FICCI study
Indian seafood exports will face significant pressure following the imposition of the US reciprocal tariffs, according to a study by the industry body FICCI. India's exports of fish, meat, and processed seafood are valued at US USD 2.58 billion with six product categories--Frozen Shrimp, Frozen Fish, Fish Meal and Fish Feed, Frozen Squid, Surimi & Analogue Products, and Frozen Cuttlefish--accounting for 94 per cent of total export value. US is India's largest seafood export market, holding a 34.5 per cent share of total export value. Frozen shrimp dominates, contributing 91.9 per cent of the export value (USD 2.34 billion) and 90.4 per cent of the volume (2.97 lakh tonnes). «Indian seafood exports will face significant pressure following the imposition of the US reciprocal tariffs,» the study said. India competes with countries like Canada, Ecuador, Indonesia and Vietnam in these categories. Other Latin American countries also compete in the market.

"PM Modi should raise this issue firmly": Congress MP Pramod Tiwari backs Stalin's request on Katchatheevu island
«It has become a concerning issue for us, our fishermen and all the Indians. It is a matter related to security. The PM should raise this issue firmly. Even an inch of Indian land belongs to us. I support that it (Kachchatheevu Island) should be under the protection of India...It is ours,» Tiwari told ANI. This came after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday regarding the retrieval of Katchatheevu Island. The Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution on April 2 regarding the retrieval of Katchatheevu island to protect the traditional fishing rights of Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay area. The letter dated April 3, reads, «I am writing this letter to bring to your immediate attention to the Resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on 02.04.2025 regarding the retrieval of Katchatheevu island, to protect the traditional fishing rights of the Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay area. I would like to point out that the origin of the problem is the Indo-Sri Lankan Treaty (Katchatheevu Agreement) made between the two Countries in the year 1974.»

Rahul Gandhi criticises PM Modi for not visiting Manipur amid crisis
Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur, despite the state witnessing prolonged violence and now being under President's Rule. Taking to X, Gandhi said, «Yesterday, I met with Congress leaders from different communities of Manipur in Parliament. It's deeply concerning that after nearly two years of violence and now President's Rule, PM Modi has still not visited the state.» Highlighting the need for peace and stability, he added, «The people of Manipur deserve peace and stability. Every Indian stands united in wanting a lasting solution to this crisis. Resolving this conflict must be our national priority.» The situation in Manipur is disturbing, with violent clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities. Manipur has been under the President's rule since February after the resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh, as announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The state has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023. Meanwhile, Gandhi also opposed the central government's decision to permit offshore mining along the coasts of Kerala, Gujarat, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, calling it a move that threatens marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

"Our government has inherited the problem": EAM replies on Indian fishermen detained by Sri Lanka
Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lanka during the question hour in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishanker said that the current government inherited the situation due to events that can be traced back to 1974 and 1976. Jaishankar detailed Sri Lanka's legal framework, stating, «Sri Lanka has two laws--the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act of 1996 and the Fisheries Regulation of Foreign Fishing Boats of 1979. Both these acts were amended in 2018 and 2023, providing for much stiffer sentences, bigger fines, and greater detention.» He explained that many of those serving sentences are boat owners, skippers, or repeat offenders, complicating resolution efforts. He stated that the «root cause» of the ongoing issue related to the detention of Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka began in 1974 when the international maritime boundary line was drawn, followed by an exchange of letters in 1976 with Sri Lanka delineating fishing jurisdiction. «The house is aware that, in a way, our government has inherited the problem. This problem began in 1974 when the international maritime boundary line was drawn, followed by an exchange of letters in 1976 delineating fishing jurisdiction. These decisions are the root cause of the situation,» EAM said while replying to the question raised by DMK MP Tiruchi Siva.

Shark or Uber? Octopus catches a free ride in the wild. Watch the viral moment
Maori octopus gripping onto the back of a shortfin mako shark, one of the fastest predators in the sea. Marine scientists from the University of Auckland first observed this peculiar scene in December 2023 while studying the waters of the Hauraki Gulf near New Zealand’s North Island. The footage, recently released, provides a fascinating glimpse into the unusual interaction, which researchers have dubbed the “sharktopus.” As the shark moved effortlessly through the water, the octopus clung tightly, seemingly enjoying the ride. This unexpected marine encounter has left viewers both entertained and intrigued. While it’s unclear why the octopus latched onto the shark, the footage offers a rare glimpse into the complex and often surprising interactions between ocean creatures.
