Study: Refrigeration effective in preventing E. coli on lettuce, not kale and collards
lettuce from E. coli contamination, but not kale and collards — types of saag — a new research has found. Seeing outbreaks on lettuce but not on kale and other brassica vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens and others, researchers analysed the tendencies of leafy greens to get infected with E. coli, or Escherichia coli, a bacterium species found in lower intestines of humans. While generally harmless, some of its strains are occasionally responsible for food contaminations and can cause food poisoning. The researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US, infected whole leaves from five leafy greens — romaine lettuce, green-leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, and collards — with E. coli (serotype O157:H7) and observed what happened after storing them under these temperatures — 4 degrees Celsius (refrigeration), 20 degrees Celsius (room temperature) and 37 degrees Celsius (normal body temperature). Overall, a combination of both temperature and leaf surface properties such as roughness and the natural wax coating were found to govern susceptibility to the bacterial contamination, the researchers found.

AI models make stuff up. How can hallucinations be controlled?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is promptly met by a response that is confident, coherent and just plain wrong. In an AI model, such tendencies are usually described as hallucinations. A more informal word exists, however: these are the qualities of a great bullshitter.

Mirwaiz stopped again from addressing Friday congregation, hopeful of justice from court: Auqaf
Mirwaiz Umer Farooq from addressing the congregation at historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar and didn’t allow him to leave his residence. The Anjuman Auqaf which runs the affairs of Jama Masjid termed it as an ‘unjustified move’ and ‘a restriction on the fundamental rights’ of Mirwaiz. They alleged that the authorities had informed them on Thursday that Mirwaiz would be allowed to come to Jama for the Friday prayers and sermon. “On Friday morning they reneged on their promise and again put him under house detention and regretfully once again Mirwaiz was prohibited from offering mandatory Friday prayers and delivering his sermons,” read the statement of Auqaf. They further said that Mirwaiz is being unjustly prevented from carrying out his religious duties at the Jama Masjid, which is a place of significant spiritual importance to the muslims. “This restriction not only impedes on his fundamental rights but also on the rights of the community members who benefit from his teachings. “Repeated appeals to authorities for his release from all quarters are falling on deaf ears,” Anjuman said.

Kovind-led panel aims at “minimum possible” amendments to Constitution and election-related laws
Kovind-led panel is aiming at “minimum possible” amendments to the Constitution and various other election-related laws, to enable a switch to simultaneous polls. However, this is bound to be challenging given that assessments so far point to extensive constitutional and legal amendments. Anubhuti Vishnoi takes a look: First Time: Law Commission’s 1999 report called for a two-phase process with some assemblies going to polls midterm of the Lok Sabha and the remaining at the end of Lok Sabha’s tenure with EC notifying polls six months before completion of term. Niti Aayog’s 2015 proposal also pitched for a two-phase process while the EC has suggested that all elections falling in one year be conducted together, and states going to polls in the same year as general elections be clubbed with Lok Sabha polls.

Climate change: Scientists explore ‘injecting ice’ to reduce water vapor and cool Earth
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA plan to inject ice high up in the air so that water vapour in the upper atmosphere would get a bit drier and that could counteract a small amount of the human-caused warmth. Notably, Water Vapour is a potent player in the Earth's greenhouse effect that eventually leads to the increase in the planet's surface temperature. According to NASA, Earth's surface temperature would be about 59 degrees Fahrenheit (33 degrees Celsius) colder without the greenhouse gases.
