UK issues record number of work visas to fill staff shortages
UK in the year to June as employers scrambled to recruit from overseas amid ongoing labor shortages, according to official figures. The Home Office data showed how reliant the UK remains on foreign workers 2 1/2 years after the post-Brexit immigration regime came into force. The number of work visas issued was 45% more than a year earlier. Over a third of the total, 121,290, were “health and care” visas – a 157% increase in the previous year – as the UK struggled to meet the staffing needs of the National Health Service and care providers. Indian and Nigerian nationals accounted for the largest share. With employers unable to fill over a million jobs, the government has responded by expanding the shortage occupation list, its visa rule exemption system, to make it easier to bring workers into the country. However, soaring migration numbers have become a political headache for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak given the promises the Conservative government made to control Britain’s borders after the 2016 referendum that put Britain on a path out of the European Union.

ETMarkets Fund Manager Talk-Inflation unlikely a major cause of concern in medium term: Gautam Sinha, ICICI Pru Life
equities in the last 5 months somewhat fizzled out after inflation concerns resurfaced this month with the Reserve Bank of India’s hawkish view and firming up of oil prices. However, this time around neither is inflation going to be a major cause of concern nor will it lead to sharp rate increases, according to Gautam Sinha Roy, executive vice president and fund manager — equity at ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. “While the hike in this rate cycle has been steep, we believe we are somewhere close to the peak of the cycle…So, from the markets point of view, fear of further sharp rate hikes leading to dampening of risk appetite is unlikely,” Roy said in an interview with ETMarkets. Edited excerpts:Inflation and rate hike concerns are making a comeback both on the domestic andglobal fronts. Is this likely to dampen the Indian market momentum in the near term? We believe inflation is not going to be a major cause of concern in the medium term.

Indian defence companies a long-term growth story; betting on Zomato: Siddhartha Khemka
Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Retail Research, MOFSL, says among food aggregators, we definitely like Zomato. We have a target price of Rs 110. We believe the excellent Q1 numbers where the company has turned profitable at PAT level, which is much ahead of its Q4, FY24 guidance. We believe that the company could see strong growth where the management is confident of achieving 40% plus organic growth. Even Blinkit is seeing improvement.”How realistic are the gains in some of the companies which have got business or presence in this entire space/rocket vertical? Stocks have gone up 50 to 100% even though the upside could be minuscule. Is it time to log out of BHEL or Paras Defence or Centrum Electronics? Just about every company in that space has got re-rated because of the Chandrayaan mission. The defence space has been in momentum not only because of the Chandrayaan effect but in the past several months also we have seen the large order book that has flown to some of these Indian companies.

No to metals as a basket, yes to these 2 stocks: Chakri Lokapriya
Chakri Lokapriya, CIO & MD, TCG AMC, says “metals as a basket has underperformed. Valuations are attractive but the business momentum is just not there because of global uncertainty. Jindal Steel and Power valuation is still probably about five times EV/EBITDA. While we would stay away from the sector, may go for a couple of companies like Jindal Steel and Power and maybe Hindalco.”As we are now gearing up for the festive season, it definitely is going to be very critical for a lot of these consumer durable companies across the board. What is it that you are anticipating from this festive season and the kind of cheer it could bring for FMCG companies?FMCG companies, probably in terms of consumer staple, not much other than the traditional bounce.

Mortgage lender Better's shares sink in grim Nasdaq debut
mortgage lender, which went public via a blank-check company merger just as mortgage rates have hit two-decade highs. Backed by SoftBank, Better completed its combination with special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Aurora Acquisition Corp, capping a rocky deal that was first announced in 2021 but delayed amid regulatory scrutiny and layoffs at Better. The company hit the headlines in December 2021 after it laid off 900 employees via Zoom, and has since seen its profits dented as high mortgage rates have dampened demand for home loans. Aurora went public in March 2021. Shares in Better Home & Finance Holding Co, the newly merged entity, finished the session down 93.4% at $1.15. SPACs are shell companies that raise funds through a public listing with the goal of acquiring a private company and taking it public.

'Assassin's Creed Mirage': See release date, platforms and more
Assassin's Creed Mirage' was showcased at Gamescom in Cologne. The game, developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux, offers a glimpse into medieval Baghdad. The presentation took place during the influential German video game convention and is scheduled to release on October 5, 2023, for PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms. The trailer, named «The Round City of Baghdad,» provides a cinematic view of 9th-century Baghdad during its Golden Age. It also delves into the history of the main character, Basim, and the core concept of the Assassin's Creed. Basim voices, «My sword spares the innocent, but not the order of the ancients.» The trailer offers glimpses of stealth and acrobatic gameplay atop the buildings of the Middle Eastern city. Ubisoft Bordeaux's art director, Jean-Luc Sala, discussed the meticulous process of city reconstruction. Drawing on writings from contemporary scholars and collaborating with historians both within and outside Ubisoft, the team aimed to capture Baghdad's authentic essence while incorporating a park-oriented style of play. Sala shed light on Basim's development, a character familiar to fans from the previous installment, Assassin's Creed Valhalla. In 'Mirage,' Basim is depicted as an apprentice still grasping the Creed and the Assassin's way. Sala described him as somewhat naive and grappling with identity, finding purpose through the Creed. Regarding the educational Discovery Tour mode seen in recent series releases, Sala revealed its absence in 'Mirage.' Instead, players will encounter collectibles dispersed throughout the game map in the form of codex pages. To gather all the codex pages, players must explore the in-game world extensively.
