Assam Accord: SC upholds constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act
Assam Accord, sets the framework for granting citizenship to certain migrants in Assam. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices Surya Kant, MM Sundresh, and Manoj Misra, supported the decision, while Justice JB Pardiwala dissented. The Assam Accord, signed in 1985 between the Indian government and the representatives of the Assam Movement, was a response to the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, which resulted in a large influx of migrants into Assam. Section 6A was enacted as a humanitarian measure and allows individuals who migrated between January 1, 1966, and March 25, 1971, to obtain Indian citizenship under certain conditions.

Canadian PM alone responsible for damaged relations between India-Canada: MEA reacts after Trudeau's admission of 'no proof'
Justin Trudeau admitted that his government had not provided «hard evidentiary proof» when accusing India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said Trudeau’s statement «only confirms» what New Delhi has maintained «consistently all along.» The MEA also blamed Trudeau's «cavalier behaviour» for damaging relations between India and Canada. «What we have heard today only confirms what we have been saying consistently all along—Canada has presented us no evidence whatsoever in support of the serious allegations that it has chosen to level against India and Indian diplomats,» MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in an official statement. He added, «The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone.»

After Voda Idea's call, bank guarantee waiver in works
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has prepared a draft cabinet note seeking to waive the requirement of providing bank guarantees (BGs) for securitisation of deferred spectrum instalments, subject to some conditions, officials said. The move follows a request by Vodafone Idea (Vi) for such a waiver, they said. “The BG waiver for next instalment, however, can only be considered if the telco agrees to pay an additional three months’ amount along with the annual payment,” said one of the officials, who did not wish to be identified. If the draft gets cabinet nod, there won’t be any requirement for BGs. But the telcos will have to pay instalments for 15 months annually, with instalments for three more months acting as a security for next year’s payments. Therefore, while Vi has been calling for waiver of the BG requirement, the DoT proposal, if cleared by the cabinet, may see a higher annual outgo for the telco, which has been desperately trying to emerge from a cash crisis, said experts.
