Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said two Congress MLAs, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and former minister Basanta Das, have decided to "join the government". Ganpat Gaikwad and four accomplices, arrested for an assassination attempt on a Shiv Sena leader within a police station, have been remanded to a 14-day judicial custody by a local court. Besides Gaikwad, Harshal Kene, Sandeep Sarvankar, Divyesh alias Vicky Ganatra, and driver Ranjit Yadav, were presented before the court on Wednesday at the conclusion of their police custody amidst tight security measures surrounding the court premises. The MLA is accused of firing upon Mahesh Gaikwad, the Kalyan unit head of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, inside the room of the senior inspector's office at Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar earlier this month. The accused face charges of attempted murder and other related offences.

Maldives has deported 186 foreigners, including 43 Indians, after accusing them of committing crimes like visa violations and drug offences, according to a media report. The highest number of people deported was from Bangladesh. At least 83 Bangladeshis were deported followed by 43 Indians, 25 Sri Lankans and 8 Nepalis. The date of their deportation is not yet known, Male-based news outlet Adhadhu reported. The deportations come as efforts are underway in the Maldives to shut down businesses operated illegally.

Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar was injured on Wednesday after losing balance and falling on a car's bonnet, on which he was standing, while addressing reporters in North 24 Parganas district, following which he was taken to a hospital, a party official said. Majumdar, who was prevented from going to restive Sandeshkhali by the district administration on Tuesday, put up at a guest house in Taki late in the night following a dharna in front of the Basirhat police district SP's office. The state BJP president, who made attempts to go to Sandeshkhali again on Wednesday morning, was prevented by the police from leaving the area. Majumdar, also a Lok Sabha MP from the state's Balurghat constituency, was addressing reporters standing on the car's bonnet, when he slipped and fell on it, the party official said.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal on Wednesday said they are ready for holding talks with the Centre over their demands, including a legal guarantee to minimum support price. Citing media reports, Dallewal said Union Minister Anurag Thakur has, in his statement, said that the Centre was ready for holding talks and was also ready to resolve the issues of the farmers. «We do not want to give any room to the Centre for saying that it was inviting us, but they did not accept it. That we have accepted and we are ready for talks,» he told reporters at the Shambhu border. Dallewal said the farmer leaders have taken the consent of fellow farmers for holding talks.

Attempts to access hazardous websites saw a 34% rise in February compared to the prior month, and a staggering 175% surge from January 2023.
