IPEF talks’ secrecy, limited public input key concerns: GTRI
Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) negotiations have mostly been conducted in secrecy with limited public input and it raises concerns whether the member countries, including India, were able to protect their key interests, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said Sunday. It cautioned that the commitments related to the effective administration of tax policy might curtail the ability to raise tax revenue. It said in the supply chain pillar, a major issue is whether the agreement might restrict members from trading critical materials, particularly with China as this could pose challenges for Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (Asean) countries, whose largest trading partner is China. “It is hoped that India has negotiated enough flexibility to avoid strict clauses, such as the not to use export restrictions. These are critical during emergencies, as no country can be expected to supply essential goods when facing its own crisis,” GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

Why you need to ditch BMI for better ways to assess your health
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. There used to be a time when upon joining a gym, the first thing trainers would make you do would be to stand on a BMI (body mass index) machine, enter your height and weight, and wait while it whirred and spat out a receipt with your number. While BMI is basically a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of a person, the machine would also give data on visceral fat, real age and other determinants that could either be impressive or scary or both.

AI could be capable of 'learning by thinking', say researchers
Artificial intelligence (AI) too could be capable of 'learning by thinking', which is known to be core to a great discovery, according to a review. Cognitive scientists have documented how people learn from observation, in which one acquires knowledge by observing the external world. However, another way of learning — a relatively neglected one — is 'learning by thinking', in which one gains knowledge without input from the external world, such as through thought experiments or self-explanations, according to Tania Lombrozo, a professor of psychology at the Princeton University and the author of the review published in the journal 'Trends in Cognitive Sciences'. In a thought experiment, one hypothetically explores a theory or a principle by thinking through its consequences, whereas in learning through self-explanations, one makes a sense of new information by relating it with what they already know.

2024 PT5: All about the asteroid that will become Earth's mini moon for two months
Earth's moon will have company for almost two months: a second moon. According to a study published in the journal Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society, 2024 PT5, an asteroid from the Arjuna asteroid belt, will technically be caught in the Earth's gravitational pull rather than a second moon. This is the number of mini-moons that form. When an object in space experiences Earth's gravitational pull, it can turn into an orbiter by fully rotating around the planet, or it can be called a flyby if it only partially rotates around the planet, as 2024 PT5 is currently doing. The horseshoe-shaped trajectory of 2024 PT5, which was discovered on August 7, indicates that it will complete a semi-orbit of Earth before resuming its regular orbit around the sun. The mini-moon, according to researchers, will occur between September 29 and November 25. Also Read :U.S Elections: Kamala Harris leading in all polls? FedEx slumps 15% amid weak demand for pricey priority deliveries
Shares of FedEx slumped 15% on Friday, on track for their worst day in two years, after dismal first-quarter results, in what analysts attributed to a combination of broader economic concerns and an unfavorable shift in the company's sales from higher-priced deliveries. FedEx, seen as a global trade barometer, is potentially losing nearly $11 billion in market value, and has also dragged down its rivals UPS and DHL shares, as the shipping industry deals with sluggish demand and bloated costs.
