Hindenburg hits out at Madhabi Buch, again: Short-seller says Sebi chief's response raises 'new critical questions'
Hindenburg Research on Sunday responded to Sebi chief Madhabi Puri Buch's statement from the weekend that accused the short-seller of attempting a "character assassination" of the Buchs. In a post on its X account, the short-seller said that the markets regulator boss' response «raises numerous new critical questions,» and «includes several important admissions.» The Buchs had, on Sunday, addressed the allegations made by Hindenburg Research, dismissing them as “baseless,” Sebi chief Madhabi and her husband Dhaval said the US-based short-seller is resorting to character assassination in response to a show-cause notice issued by the regulator in connection with Hindenburg's earlier report on Adani.

Mutual funds are a better investment option than stocks from a tax point of view; know why
tax on stocks and mutual funds stays. It has been seven years since this tax was introduced and the only change has been the rate increase from 10% to 12.5% this year. This is now the uniform rate not just for stocks and equity funds, but for many other types of investments. However, this is where the similarity ends. For investors who want to earn long-term returns and build real wealth through equity-based assets, the tax structure means that significant attention needs to be paid to where they invest and when they buy and sell those investments. The single most important point to be noted is that it’s far more beneficial, from a tax point of view, to invest in mutual funds than stocks. While this has been true since February 2018, the hike in long-term capital gains tax in this year’s Budget has made it that much more important. In any case, even earlier, many investors did not appreciate this about taxation. I’ll recap the underlying principle. All equity portfolios need some buying or selling as individual stocks become more or less desirable. This is true even if you are good at choosing stocks and holding most of these for several years. Time goes by, circumstances change, companies and markets evolve, and the formerly good stocks have to be sold and something better bought. If you are investing in stocks yourself, these transactions will translate into tax liability.

Has gold lost sheen after custom duty cut announced in Budget 2024?
gold ETFs and sovereign gold bonds, which track prices of physical gold, also crashed by 5-6%. Investors felt shortchanged as the worth of their investments eroded overnight. Have gold investors really been robbed of their gains by the government? The nine percentage point cut in the import duty on gold is acute.

From Citi to 3i to Hindenburg's crosshairs, the many lives of banker turned investor Anil Ahuja
IPE Plus Fund, finds itself in the crosshairs of Hindenburg Research, its New Delhi-born, Singapore-based, founder and chief investment officer (CIO) Anil Ahuja finds himself in the news yet again. Ahuja was among the first to make a private equity bet on the Adani Group, while he was at 3i Infrastructure, which he joined in 2005. In 2007, 3i made the first investment from its Indian infrastructure fund, paying $227 million (Rs897 crore at the time) for an undisclosed stake in Adani Power Ltd, then a fully-owned subsidiary of flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd. According to a TOI report, with the enterprise value of Adani Power pegged at Rs 10,850 crore, 3i's equity stake in Adani Power worked out to around 8%. This was 3i’s largest transaction in India since it started investing in the country in mid-2005. It held onto the stock for over seven years. When it sold a 2% block in the company in 2014, VC Circle calculated a 25-30% loss in pound sterling (40% in dollar terms) largely on account of sharp depreciation of the Indian currency. Ahuja left 3i in 2013 and joined IPE Plus Advisors in January 2014. Read More: Madhabi Buch made disclosures, investors should read Hindenburg disclaimer: Sebi

'Hindenburg report a move to destroy India's markets': Govt
Hindenburg report as a calculated move to destroy India's primary and secondary market by attacking the regulator's credibility through the dredging up of a non-issue. Madhabi Puri Buch, chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), made the investments mentioned in the Hindenburg report before 2017 in a private capacity and these had been disclosed, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Early on Sunday, Buch said that these were «baseless allegations» and devoid of any truth, underscoring this point.

As monsoon takes hold, anti-infective, respiratory drugs' demand surges
monsoon sets in, a surge in demand for seasonal products within the respiratory, anti-infective, and anti-malarial therapeutic categories have been seen. According to market research firm Pharmatrack, the respiratory market was driven by anti-asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) products, along with cough and cold preparations. The market also witnessed close to 200% growth for Poractant Alfa usage (pulmonary surfactant) in July. Likewise, the entire anti-infective segment, encompassing anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-TB products, witnessed robust double-digit growth, potentially fuelled by the surge in respiratory infections, waterborne diseases, and skin infections.

Falling prices, low consumer trust, imports issues for lab-grown diamond: GTRI
lab-grown diamond industry is facing challenges such as significant fall in prices, eroding consumer interest and competition from imports, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said Sunday, adding said that though India faces the issue of production overcapacity, it continues to import in large amounts and this issue needs deeper investigation. To address these challenges, the government needs to take certain steps such as setting clear and consistent rules to standardize quality, certification, and market practices; issuing a Quality Control Order to check quality of imports; and investment in research and development to improve production processes, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of lab-grown diamonds. As per the report, India’s lab-grown diamond industry is facing a major challenge, with prices falling by 65% in the past year to Rs 20,000 per carat from Rs 60,000 due to local overproduction and oversupply from abroad, which points to problems like overproduction, high imports, and lack of regulation. The number of units producing lab-grown diamonds in India has increased to 10,000 units, leading to over supply and tougher competition.

Why the reliable office workhorse rarely gets ahead
You work so hard. Why aren’t you getting ahead? “Literally, what more can I do?" Alison Fragale, a professor who studies power, says the office workhorses among us think. We’re the ones picking up the slack when teammates fall short, the ones the boss calls when she needs something done fast, or last minute, or after hours.

The problem of crimes stemming from hunger
Goan crime being foiled. Thieves broke into the premises of a maker of chouriço, Goa’s spicy pork sausages. Local dogs, probably lusting after the sausages themselves, raised an alarm and the owner trapped the two thieves in the smoking room. Did the thieves eat the sausages as they waited for arrest? Food theft is one of the oldest crimes. In Christopher J Garcia’s entertaining book Food & Crime, he writes that the oldest legal texts, like the Codes of Ur-Nammu and Hammurabi include food related proscriptions. He also notes it is one of the broadest crimes: “It starts with piddly little pilfering, such as walking off with a pack of gum from the checkout line, then continues through to the highjacking of entire convoys of shellfish.” Garcia suggests that food theft works on CRAVED principles: “Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable and Disposable.” Cheese fits most of these parameters. Garcia notes that “the Centre for Retail Research estimates that four per cent of all cheese produced is stolen”. This is almost a million tonnes of stolen cheese. It is easily melted or cut into different forms and can be worth a lot, especially artisanal European cheeses made with unpasteurised milk, which are banned in the US.

Sensationalism or cause for concern? What experts and Opposition say on Hindenburg vs SEBI issue
Hindenburg Research's recent allegations against SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch have sparked significant debate. While many experts dismiss the claims as baseless and sensationalist, with notable figures like former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai and Deepak Shenoy criticizing the report's lack of substance, the Opposition has seized the opportunity to demand a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) inquiry. Former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai was among the first to respond to Hindenburg’s report. He labeled the allegations as “character assassination by a vulture fund,” criticizing the report for being sensationalist. Pai took to X (formerly Twitter) to denounce the claims, asserting that the report aimed only to create a scandal rather than present factual information. He also defended SEBI’s regulatory processes, highlighting that regulations are developed through open consultations and reflect a collective effort of market participants and regulators based on global standards.

Integrity of SEBI questioned, JPC probe into Hindenburg a must": INDIA bloc targets govt on Hindenburg allegations
SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Buch and her husband have drawn sharp political reactions from the opposition parties. Reacting to the Hindenburg report, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari on Sunday lashed out at the Modi government and said that the tenure of PM Modi will be known for 'Adani-waad'. «The whole world witnessed a different session with different ideologies but the term of PM Modi will be known as 'Adani-waad'. In this Adani-waad, they captured the whole economic system of India in such a way that Gautam Ad(Adani Group) could benefit, it looks like this is the only motive of PM Modi,» he said.

SC should take note of allegations levelled by Hindenburg against SEBI chief: AAP
AAP on Sunday demanded that the Supreme Court take note of the allegations levelled by US short seller Hindenburg against SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch. Hindenburg Research has alleged that it suspects SEBI's unwillingness to act against Adani Group may be because Madhabi Puri had stakes in offshore funds linked to the conglomerate — an allegation that the SEBI head called «baseless» and an attempt of «character assassination». Addressing a press conference here, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the SEBI had told a Supreme Court panel that the investigation into the Adani group was «directionless». «SEBI chief and her husband's money was invested in shell companies. Why were these facts hidden from the Supreme Court? The apex Court should take note of the new developments and how facts were hidden,» he said.
