Several heatwave indices failed to capture severity of extreme weather: Study
heatwaves have become more frequent and intense, emerging as a significant contributor to heat-related deaths. Researchers said that this underscores the urgency of recognising their impact and severity. In the study, published in the journal Nexus, the researchers from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University analysed six available heat wave indices, including the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index and Canada's humidex. WBGT index was first developed in the 1950s by the US military to prevent heat-related illnesses in training camps.

NASA watches 110-foot Sardar Patel's Statue of Unity sized asteroid at 30,381 km/h towards Earth-Will it hit?
2024 OR1, measuring approximately 110 feet in diameter, is on a trajectory that will bring it close to Earth on August 6, 2024, at 6:41 PM IST. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) issued a warning about this near-Earth object (NEO), which is traveling at a speed of 30,381 kilometers per hour. However, it is predicted to pass safely away from Earth. 2024 OR1 belongs to the Apollo group, a category of asteroids with orbits that intersect Earth’s orbit, making them subjects of intense study. The asteroid's dimensions and rapid speed place it under NASA's close observation regime, part of a broader effort to track potentially hazardous asteroids. The size of 2024 OR1 is roughly comparable to that of a blue whale, and it moves at velocities similar to other fast-moving NEOs. Radar observations and optical telescopes have been employed to determine its trajectory and physical characteristics. NASA's initial detection of 2024 OR1 happened at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. The detection is part of the agency’s ongoing mission to monitor NEOs that could pose a danger to Earth. These efforts are managed by NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO), which is tasked with detecting, tracking, and characterizing hazardous asteroids and comets.

As Citadel Securities expands, people keep migrating from Goldman Sachs
Citadel Securities has got some big aspirations.Bloomberg reported earlier this month that the electronic trading firm would like to offer a white labelled trading service to banks that presumably would no longer run trading operations of their own. In return for a fee, the vision seems to be that Citadel Securities would manage technology, order analytics and execution. Banks would just need to plug in the clients.

Big Tech is busy wrapping up AI talent to dominate the market
Big Tech is following a crafty playbook to hoover up AI talent: Instead of buying the hottest AI startups, the giants hire their leadership and license their intellectual property, essentially sucking the life out of them. So long as they leave behind the shell of a company, antitrust scrutiny can be avoided. Alphabet’s Google [which just had bad news in the form of a court ruling against it for its search market monopoly], is the latest to follow this template by hiring the co-founders of Character.ai, Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, along with a few other employees.
