Investors eye Fed rate cut, earnings as key to sustaining market rally
investors are on guard for potential bumps in the second quarter as they gauge whether the Federal Reserve delivers on an expected interest rate cut by June and turn their focus on the health of upcoming earnings. The S&P 500 ended the first quarter with a gain of more than 10%, its largest first quarter advance since the nearly 13.1% jump in the first quarter of 2019. While so-called Magnificent Seven stocks such as chipmaker Nvidia and Facebook parent Meta Platforms provided the bulk of the gains for the quarter, economically-sensitive sectors such as energy and industrials have rallied over the past six weeks.

India to reimpose restrictions on procurement of solar modules from April 1
solar modules will be reimposed from April 1, a measure aimed at fostering local capacity. It had earlier exempted solar projects commissioned by March 31, 2024, from the mandatory requirement of procuring solar modules from the approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM) for 2023-24. The mandate, introduced in 2021, required solar project developers to buy modules from the approved list as a non-tariff barrier to boost domestic manufacturing.

Daniel Kahneman: The Nobel Prize-winning psychologist who revolutionized economics
Daniel Kahneman never took an economics course. But he received the 2002 Nobel Prize in economics for his work on 'Prospect theory'. Developed along with Amos Tversky, the theory suggested altering the way we consider our options when faced with risk. In a series of startlingly innovative studies, the two psychologists upended conventional wisdom about decision-making, and demonstrated how the human mind consistently makes mistakes when making decisions in unpredictable circumstances. Kahneman provided an explanation for a variety of perplexing behaviours, such as the reason for people's refusal to sell stocks that have lost value. How strange are biases? Well, most people would opt for the sure thing if given the option to choose between receiving ₹500 for certain, or having a 50% chance of winning ₹1,000. But if the choice is between losing ₹500 for sure, or a 50% chance of losing ₹1,000, most of us will take the gamble.

iFOREST study reveals Assam's surging renewable energy potential, surpassing prior assessments by govt agencies
iFOREST), a prominent environmental research think tank, released new research findings showing that Assam is blessed with significantly higher renewable energy (RE) generation potential than previously assessed by central government agencies. The reassessed RE potential is adequate to support a low-carbon pathway to meet the state's growing electricity demand. While an increased commitment to RE projects is already visible in the state, there are limitations to growth that need to be addressed through policy tightening and institutional capacity building. The research reports titled «Assam Renewable Energy Potential Reassessment: Focus on Solar, Wind, and Biomass,» «Enabling Renewable Energy Growth in Assam,» and «Impact of ISTS Waiver on Economics of Solar Power Procurement in Assam» were released in Guwahati during a multi-stakeholder dialogue organized by iFOREST.

India to be among main drivers of 2024 smartphone shipment volumes: Counterpoint
Emerging markets such as India, Middle East, and Africa are regions expected to drive the road to recovery in global smartphone shipment volumes in 2024, on the back of increasing shipments of budget phones with the premium segment remaining stable, according to a new report. A Counterpoint Research report released Thursday forecast a modest 3% on-year increase in shipments, reaching 1.2 billion units globally, driven by the budget ($150-$249) segment which saw a dip last year due to macroeconomic headwinds especially in emerging markets. The research firm, though, said it expects low single-digit growth in global smartphone shipments, as the market has seemingly bottomed out.

An unconventional strategy for retirement in today’s time
Mutual Fund’s Retirement Readiness Survey 2023, two observations significantly struck my attention. One — that people plan for happy outcomes and disregard the importance of negative ones. Perhaps it's because we've witnessed our elders grappling with health issues, boredom, loneliness, and financial dependency on their children.
