Netflix's Reed Hastings gives $50 million to Bowdoin for AI program
Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings wants more researchers and students to ask deep questions about artificial intelligence and its potential to upend human norms. To that end, Hastings has donated $50 million to Bowdoin College, his alma mater, to create a research initiative on «AI and Humanity» — the largest gift to the liberal arts college in Maine since its founding in 1794, the school announced Monday. The aim of the program, Hastings and school officials said, is to make Bowdoin a mecca for studying the risks and consequences of AI. The initiative also aims to help prepare students to grapple with emerging technologies that can manufacture humanlike texts and even produce formulas for potential new drug compounds.

Tariff Worries: US earnings outlook for first quarter looks less rosy
Apple, Tesla and Ford Motor are among companies contributing the most to recently lowered estimates for the quarter, along with some insurers, whose projections have been hurt by fires in California early this year, according to Tajinder Dhillon, senior research analyst at LSEG. S&P 500 forecasts for the first quarter of 2025 have fallen by 4.5 percentage points since January 1, the largest downward revision since the fourth quarter of 2023, he said. Earnings growth for S&P 500 companies is now seen at 7.7% year-over-year, which would be the lowest since 2023's third quarter and a big decline from 17.1% in the fourth quarter of 2024, based on Friday's LSEG data. While a handful of companies have already reported on the quarter, the unofficial start of the first-quarter season is still weeks away.

India most exciting structural story in emerging markets: Gustavo Medeiros
Gustavo Medeiros, Global Head of Research, Ashmore Investment Management, says India still trades at a premium to emerging markets but is a much smaller premium than it was before the correction, about three-four months ago. Therefore, Ashmore has started to look into some of the companies that they like to find opportunities. In terms of structural stories, Medeiros says one should look into are overarching trends that have many years to play out. One of the top trends in India is inclusion of women in the labour market and the ability of India to absorb more manufacturing. These are two interesting structural trends and one should look into companies that will benefit from that from that perspective. Ashmore has always loved India, hasn’t it? Gustavo Medeiros: Absolutely, yes, the world loves India. It is the most exciting structural story in emerging markets. It has been for many years, but particularly over the last 10 years, since economic policies have been much more pro-market.

Video shows the jaw-dropping cost of laptops in 1989: Are we getting technology cheaper than ever?
expensive personal computers used to be. In the clip, experts discuss machines that cost anywhere from $5,000 to $11,000—a sum that, adjusted for inflation, would be roughly $12,000 to $26,000 today. And what did you get for that price? A 20MB hard drive, a black-and-white display, and no internet connectivity. Compared to today’s ultra-thin, ultra-fast laptops that can cost as little as $300, the difference is staggering.
