Saregama-Bhansali deal: How Bollywood is learning to separate art, ownership and risk
₹325 crore, allows Bhansali Productions Pvt. Ltd to retain full intellectual property rights over its films while giving Saregama exclusive music rights to all its future films.Experts see this development paving the way for more institutional funding in Indian cinema at a time when OTT platforms are tightening content spends and global capital is looking for disciplined exposure to Indian storytelling. This model also aligns India closer to global studio-platform economics—separating high-margin IP ownership from high-risk production, and accelerating the sector’s institutional maturity.“For Saregama, the transaction is fundamentally a music play rather than a film bet.

Beckert’s history of capitalism: Why the past tells us little about how long this economic order will endure
Capitalism: A Global History by Harvard historian Sven Beckert. In the self-interest of this claim, its length is best left undisclosed. It kicks off with a jaw-dropper: the 1639 trial in America of Robert Keayne, a trader shamed for ‘false principles’ like it being fine for someone to “sell as dear as he can and buy as cheap as he can” and take advantage of either “his own skill or ability” or “another’s ignorance or necessity.”Adam Smith’s thesis of an ‘invisible hand’ blending our interests to serve our collective well-being came much later, in 1776, though capitalism as an economic order is characterized not just by a free market, but also by the right to private property, contract enforcement and other props. The charm of Beckert’s account of endless capital self-creation is that it offers us a global view. After all, its story not only spans a millennium, it girdles the globe.Aptly, thus, this book takes us back to trade across the high seas around India about nine centuries ago.

Star power on pause: Why Bollywood is holding back on new film projects in 2025
Hindi language films stood at 33 in 2023, 34 in 2024 and 39 in 2025.Experts say sentiments around high-risk titles have remained soft, and in many cases, filmmakers have struggled to convince top stars to forego unreasonably high fees.“Everyone is worried and cautious at the moment. Over-the-top (OTT) content platforms are no longer buying films as they used to and linking rights to the box office, which remains unpredictable.

Old vs new tax regime: Why PPF still holds ground while ELSS loses appeal
When the new tax regime was first introduced in the Union Budget 2020-21, it did not attract many takers that fiscal year. This new optional tax regime offered taxpayers lower tax rates in exchange for foregoing most tax deductions and exemptions under the then-prevailing old tax regime. Its newness and the fact that the old regime still remained more attractive for most people made the shift infeasible. However, the government brought in changes to make the new regime more attractive, encouraging more people to adopt it.

Mint Quick Edit | Consumer grievance redressal: India must not let aggrieved homebuyers down
To mark National Consumer Day on 24 December in honour of India’s Consumer Protection Act of 1986, the government has made “efficient and speedy disposal through digital justice” this year’s theme. It aims to highlight the consumer’s right to grievance redressal under that law’s 2020 update, which set up adjudicatory bodies at the district, state and national levels to look into disputes. Given the judiciary’s overload of cases, this expansion was welcome. This January saw the launch of e-Jagriti, a unified platform for online redressal that explains the 2025 theme’s digital aspect.

Why Shree Cement’s H.M. Bangur is sitting out of India’s aggressive cement bidding wars
Mint for a rare interview at his house near Mumbai’s Peddar Road—other residents in the area, also called the ‘billionaires row’, are Mukesh Ambani and Sajjan Jindal.Unlike the skyscrapers that dot the neighbourhood, Bangur’s home is a two-storeyed haveli called Mohini Mahal. Dressed in a fading lavender polo shirt and black, loose-fitting trousers, one would be forgiven for mistaking the septuagenarian businessman for a retired professor sharing his time-tested thesis with the three scribes. But under that mild demeanour hides one of the corporate sector’s shrewdest strategists. In a 90-minute conversation, Bangur spoke at length about his business philosophy and why Shree Cement—the third-largest cement maker by capacity in India—hasn’t joined the top two players in their inorganic expansion spree.

How does nuclear energy fit into India’s plan to relieve electricity generation of carbon emissions?
With the passage of a law that not only opens the door for private participation in India’s nuclear power industry but also promotes it, the government hopes to meet its target of 100GW in generation capacity by 2047. Currently, it accounts for a mere 2% of our grid capacity, and given India’s demand projection for 2047 and the electricity required to meet it, that goal implies a share of 5% by then.

The case of Akhanda 2: How film releases can be hostage to legal tangles
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. In India’s film industry, where timing drives both buzz and box-office, a single last-minute court order can upend an entire release cycle—an industry-wide risk underscored by the recent case of Akhanda 2. The last-minute postponement of Telugu actor Nandamuri Balakrishna’s action adventure film earlier this month, after a Madras High Court order put a stay on its screening following an appeal filed by Eros International Media Ltd, proves that theatrical films continue to fall prey to delays arising from prolonged legal disputes.

One reform can yield multiple benefits: India should send its fertilizer subsidy directly to farmers
India’s fertilizer subsidy has long weighed heavily on the exchequer. The revised budget allocation for it in 2024-25 stood at ₹1.83 trillion. Nitrogen-based urea absorbed over 65% of it, while phosphatic and potassic fertilizers claimed the rest under the nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) regime.

Nuclear recharge: India’s Shanti Bill could revive atomic power but let’s not abandon self-reliance efforts
By adopting the Sustainable Harnessing of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (Shanti) Act of 2025, which subsumes and replaces both the Atomic Energy Act of 1962 and Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act of 2010, India is set to align its legal framework for nuclear power generation with standard global practices. Since this move could give atomic reactors a role in our transition to clean energy, it is welcome.

Rural jobs guarantee revamp: More days of work, greater burden for states?
The bill was tabled by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, minister for rural development and agriculture & farmers’ welfare.Mint reported on 15 December that the proposed legislation seeks to provide a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment, up from the current 100 days, in every financial year to each rural household whose adult members are willing to undertake unskilled manual work. The scheme will operate as a centrally-sponsored scheme, with the Union government bearing 90% of the financial burden for north-eastern and Himalayan states and Union territories, and 60% for other states. Respective states will need to stump up the rest. The expenditure under the scheme will depend on the number of persons reporting for work, the applicable wage rate, and the material and administrative components of the work.
