XEC, the new COVID-19 variant: Is it fatal? Will vaccines work? Here's what doctors want you to know
COVID-19 cases have dropped slightly in the United States following a major summer wave, but experts predict another increase as temperatures fall and people return indoors. A new COVID-19 variety, known as the XEC COVID variant, is now spreading in Europe, with cases also reported in the United States. Eric Topol, M.D., founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, recently wrote about X that the XEC variant appears to be the most likely one to get legs next. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet publicly profiled XEC, but the Scripps COVID-19 epidemiology tracker Outbreak.info has sequencing data on the variant, which is already gaining interest due to its apparent contagiousness.

Covid variant JN.1 spreading, but no rise in hospitalisations seen yet
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (Insacog), the network of laboratories set up to monitor genomic variations of the coronavirus in India, held a meeting on Friday to review the situation amid a spike in Covid-19 cases and decided to hold another meeting next week to understand the proportion of JN.1 and other sub-variants. «JN.1 is gradually spreading out, but the good news is that there is no increase in hospitalisation yet,» said an Insacog member who attended the meeting. JN.1, a subvariant of Omicron with mild symptoms and few hospitalisations so far, has spread more in Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra, the person said.

Covid could trigger 'heart failure pandemic'. Health experts warn of 'global healthcare risk' after New Year
COVID cases in recent weeks, largely due to the influx of a new strain JN.1, health experts have warned that this will increase the chances of potential heart issues for those who catch the disease. It could trigger a "heart failure pandemic" with experts sending a huge warning about a new and worrying «global healthcare risk». The researchers at Japan's top institute Riken have warned in a report that the ACE2 receptors that coronavirus clings to within human cells are «very common» in the heart. Consequently, many of those who get infected with the virus, suffer from «reduced cardiac function».

Insacog meet on Friday to take stock of rising Covid cases
Insacog — the network of laboratories set up to monitor genomic variations of the coronavirus in India — will hold a meeting on Friday. «By Friday, we will come to know about the expansion of the new sub-variant and the proportion of other existing sub variants,» said a member of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (Insacog) on the condition of anonymity. So far, 69 cases of JN.1 Covid variant cases have been reported in the country. India reported 116 new cases of Covid-19, with three deaths in Karnataka, bringing total active cases to 4,170 and the total death toll to 533,337, as of Tuesday. «The cases are expected to go up as testing has been ramped up too,» he said. While cases of newly detected sub-variant are surging, XBB continues to be dominant in India.

Covid news LIVE: Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in India and the detection of a subvariant JN.1, India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) chief Dr NK Arora said that no additional dose of vaccine is needed against the subvariant at present.“Every week you hear something new coming up in different parts and then it spreads all over India. We have identified a large number of subvariants, over 400 subvariants, or mutations of this virus, and fortunately, none of these Omicron variants have really been associated with more severe disease or hospitalisation," Dr NK Arora told ANI.The total number of active cases of Covid-19 in the country was recorded at 3,420.The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently designated JN.1 as a variant of interest, differentiating it from its parent lineage BA.2.86.

JN.1 is now a COVID-19 variant of interest, WHO says
World Health Organization has classified the COVID-19 variant JN.1 as a separate variant of interest from the parent lineage BA.2.86 due to its rapidly increasing spread. The WHO made the announcement Tuesday, saying that based on current evidence, the global health risk posed by JN.1 remains low.“Despite this, with the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, JN.1 could increase the burden of respiratory infections in many countries,” the WHO said in a statement. The health organization added it is continuously monitoring the evidence and will update the JN.1 risk evaluation as needed.Although JN.1 is now a variant of interest, the WHO said current vaccines continue to protect against severe disease and death in this variant, as others that are circulating. In Canada, JN.1 falls under the variant BA.2.86, which is an Omicron subvariant of SARS-CoV-2. Its prevalence has been steadily increasing since October, when it made up 0.1 per cent of the variants at the time.
