19-year old Chinese student votes in U.S elections in Michigan, arrested for felony but vote will be counted
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit jointly condemned the illegal vote, stressing that only U.S. citizens have the right to vote in federal elections. Although the ballot was cast illegally, due to the anonymous nature of U.S. ballots, it will still be counted in the final tally. Legal experts, including Andrew McCarthy, explain that election officials cannot identify or retrieve a specific ballot once it has gone through the voting tabulator, maintaining the U.S. tradition of a «secret ballot.» Also Read: How Puerto Rico could sway 2024 US Elections despite no electoral vote

US asked Lebanon to declare unilateral ceasefire with Israel, sources say
They said the effort was communicated by U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein to Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati this week, as the U.S. stepped up diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Mikati's office in a statement to Reuters denied the U.S. had asked Lebanon to declare a unilateral ceasefire. It said the government's stance was clear on seeking a ceasefire from both sides, and the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the last round of conflict between the two foes in 2006.

Gurgaon’s luxury vs. NYC’s skyline: What $3 million gets you in the global real estate scene
real estate prices between India and the United States. Ahluwalia shared a side-by-side comparison, asking followers, “Which $3M apartment would you prefer?” This question sparked considerable debate about the perceived overpricing of real estate in India, leading many to question the market dynamics. In Gurgaon, an investment of approximately ₹26.8 crore (around $3 million) can secure a 4BHK or 5BHK apartment in a prestigious residential society. Listings from 99 Acres show that this amount affords a property exceeding 5,000 square feet, equipped with amenities like a swimming pool, covered parking, a gym, a spa, and access to green spaces. While this offers a luxurious lifestyle, it is strikingly different from what the same sum can purchase in New York.

IPL 2025: Most expensive player retentions revealed
Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises announced their list of player retention on Thursday, October 31, ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 mega-auction. With franchises eager to secure their core talents, an impressive amount was spent to retain top players, including some rising stars. Notably, Punjab Kings took a conservative approach, retaining only two players, while other teams kept their essential players intact. The auction is scheduled for November and December, where franchises will look to fill the remaining slots. Rajasthan Royals (RR) committed to retaining six key players, leaving them with a remaining purse of Rs 41 crore for the auction. In contrast, Punjab Kings (PBKS) enter the bidding with a hefty Rs 110.5 crore, positioning them well to compete for high-value players. South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen emerged as the most expensive retention, with SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) valuing him at Rs 23 crore. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli secured his position as the priciest Indian player, with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) allocating Rs 21 crore to retain him.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s compensation surged by 63% in fiscal year 2024, reaching around $79.1 million (approximately Rs 665 crore), largely due to a substantial increase in stock awards, TOI reported, citing Microsoft’s recent U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. Stock awards rose from $39 million last year to $71 million, significantly boosting his overall earnings. However, the filing also revealed that Nadella requested a reduction in his cash compensation, citing cybersecurity concerns and hinting at a possible “China angle” in the decision.

Russia shifts more funds to military in budget draft
Russian government is seeking to reallocate 7 trillion roubles ($72 billion) in its three-year budget draft, with a significant portion of the funds directed towards the military, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said on Thursday. The draft allocates 13.5 trillion roubles to the military in 2025, accounting for a third of total expenditure or 6.3% of GDP — the highest level since the Cold War. New amendments suggest that this figure could be even higher. For the first time, the share of spending on defence will be double that of social spending. Siluanov told a cabinet meeting that the government has prepared about 900 amendments to the draft.

Israeli cabinet set to approve austerity budget amid wars
Israeli cabinet ministers were to start voting later on Thursday on a long-awaited wartime budget for 2025 that will rein in spending and raise a host of taxes to pay for the military conflicts that have engulfed the country. The wars in Gaza and Lebanon have cost Israeli coffers tens of billions of shekels on spending for defence — equipment and in manpower after hundreds of thousands of citizens were called into reserve duty — and in compensation for those impacted. «Our security also depends on the economy. We cannot have a strong military if we have no way of financing it,» Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the outset of the cabinet meeting before the budget vote, which could run into the night.
