cyber security firms have shown interest in the government’s Rs 10,000 crore graphics processing units (GPUs) procurement tender, central to India’s Artificial Intelligence Mission. Nvidia, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Qualcomm, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Palo Alto Networks were among the scores of companies that attended a pre-bid meeting on Thursday. The ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) termed the participation “exceptional” and said it will extend the last date for bids by two weeks from the date of publication of clarifications to the tender. It got around 500 suggestions on the tender from those who attended the meeting, said MeitY additional secretary Abhishek Singh. Also present at the meeting were representatives from Yotta, L&T, E2E, Tata Communications and Vigyanlabs, among others.

Mamata Banerjee in her second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday addressed her demand for a “stringent central legislation on incidents of rape” and apprised him about the steps taken by the state government on women’s safety and security. She further claimed that she had not received a response to her previous letter. “I would reiterate and earnestly request to kindly consider a stringent Central legislation and exemplary punishment on heinous crimes of rape tape and murder with mandatory provision for disposal of cases in a specific time-frame by the trial authorities. Wipro on Friday appointed Srikumar Rao as global head of its engineering edge business line, effective October 5. He succeeds Harmeet Chauhan, who is stepping down to pursue opportunities outside the organisation. Srikumar has been with Wipro for 26 years and will report to chief executive Srini Pallia in his new role. He was the chief operating officer (COO) of Wipro engineering edge (WEE) and global practice head of embedded systems. In his new role, Srikumar will continue to scale and strengthen Wipro’s engineering prowess, said the company in a filing with BSE. He will also be responsible for defining the vision and growth strategy for Wipro’s ER&D Services business.

Japan's Defense Ministry Friday sought a record 8.5 trillion yen ($59 billion) budget for the next year to fortify its deterrence on southwestern islands against China's increasing threat, while focusing on unmanned weapons and AI to make up for the declining number of servicemembers as a result of the country's shrinking population. The ministry's request for 2025 marks the third year of Japan's rapid five-year military buildup plan under the government's ongoing security strategy. Japan aims to spend 43 trillion yen ($297 billion) through 2027 to double its annual military spending to around 10 trillion yen, making it the world's third-largest military spender after the United States and China. The budget request was approved at the Defense Ministry meeting Friday ahead of a submission to the Finance Ministry for negotiations through December.

Startups raised a total funding of about $1.47 billion in August 2024, marking an 89% increase from the same period last year, when they had raised a total of $779 million across 123 rounds. Startups, primarily in the early and late stages, secured funding through 86 rounds, according to data from the private market intelligence platform Tracxn. In July 2024, startups raised around $718 million from 72 rounds.

This capability is vital for maintaining a credible strategic deterrent amid ongoing military tensions with China. SSBNs, capable of remaining submerged for extended periods, provide a secure and stealthy platform for second-strike capabilities, deterring potential first strikes.

Sebi on Friday cancelled the registration of 39 stock brokers and seven commodity brokers after they failed to meet the registration requirements. Additionally, the regulator cancelled the registration of 22 depository participants who are no longer affiliated to any depository. The main reason for cancelling the registration certificate of these entities, is to prevent them from misusing their Sebi registration without being an active participant of a depository or a member of a recognized stock exchange, thereby protecting unaware investors, the regulator said in three separate orders.
