Hindustan Zinc surges 19% to a record; experts against fresh entry now
optimism around increased industrial usage of the metal have fuelled a rally in the shares of Hindustan Zinc, which surged nearly 19% intra-day Friday to hit a lifetime high of ₹540.95. With Friday's gains, the shares have gained more than a staggering 80% since April, with a rally in zinc prices also contributing to the gains. While the stock remains in a positive momentum, experts are cautioning against buying the stock at current levels, and in fact, recommend taking some profits off the table given that valuations are expensive after the recent gains.

Brokers reopen doors to FX derivatives as dust settles
Zerodha, Motilal Oswal and Kotak Securities have begun seeking self-declarations from clients stating that such positions are taken only against unhedged exposure within the $100 million limit across all foreign exchange contracts stipulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). On 5 January, the RBI said while users could take exchange-traded currency derivatives (ETCD) positions in dollar, yen, euro and pound with rupee as the other pair up to $100 million across all recognized exchanges, without having to establish underlying exposure, the exchanges must inform them that they should be able to establish the existence of a valid underlying exposure which has not been hedged.

US says Israel's use of weapons may have violated international law
Biden administration on Friday said Israel's use of U.S.-supplied weapons may have violated international humanitarian law during its military operation in Gaza, in its strongest criticism to date of Israel. But the administration stopped short of a definitive assessment, saying that due to the chaos of the war in Gaza it could not verify specific instances where use of those weapons might have been involved in alleged breaches. The assessment came in a 46-page unclassified State Department report to Congress required under a new National Security Memorandum (NSM) that President Joe Biden issued in early February.

RBI looks at asset reconstruction companies amid a flood of allegations
asset reconstruction companies (ARC) next week to discuss corporate governance and stressed-asset resolutions amid concerns of potential back-door entry by defaulting promoters, people with knowledge of the development told ET. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked the chairman of the board, chairman of the audit committee, and managing director of the ARCs to attend the May 17 meeting in Mumbai. Two Reserve Bank executive directors and senior Mint Road officials will also participate in the meeting, the first by the banking regulator that will see the participation of all 27 registered ARCs. The meeting comes amid allegations that ARCs often strike deals with defaulting promoters, effectively giving them a back-door entry at a steep discount. Under Section 29A of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), defaulting promoters are prohibited from giving a resolution plan to lenders.

NSCN-IM warns of human rights crisis in Nagalim amid talks
NSCN-IM (National Socialist Council of Nagalim — Isak-Muivah) has expressed apprehensions regarding the potential resurgence of severe human rights violations in Nagalim if the ongoing talks fail to yield positive outcomes. Emphasising the urgency of concluding the prolonged Indo-Naga political dialogue in an honorable manner, NSCN-IM referenced the signed Framework Agreement. In this agreement, the Government of India officially acknowledged the distinctiveness of Naga history and recognised the independent nature of the Naga people. The agreement also outlined the coexistence of the Nagas and Indians, sharing sovereign power. NSCN-IM said that inspite of all the commitments and agreements, the Government of India is trying to backtrack and disown the Framework Agreement by creating situations through the agencies of its surrogate Naga factions, opportunists and the neighbouring peoples who are hostile to the cause of the Nagas. The Government of India is playing time. But the Naga people under the banner of National Socialist Council of Nagalim stand firm on the historic Framework Agreement signed on the August 3, 2015.
