A Nation Goes for Dominance—of World’s Stinkiest Fruit
Chinese farmer Wei Fuyou clearly remembers the moment four years ago when he first watched a video clip showing that durian, a pungent fruit with a smell reminiscent of gym socks, could be grown on the tropical island of Hainan, where he lives. “That means I can grow them, too!" he recalls yelping. Wei promptly cut down some of his betel nut palms and planted 400 durian trees in their place.

Kim Jong Un stops to see a fighter jet factory as Russia and North Korea are warned off arms deals
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stopped in a far eastern Russian city Friday to see a factory that builds the country's most advanced fighter jets on his extended trip that hints at his interest in sophisticated weaponry, as the U.S. and others warned Moscow and Pyongyang against making banned weapons transfer deals. Kim's visits to Russian weapons and technology sites and meetings with President Vladimir Putin have raised speculation he will supply ammunition to Russia for its war efforts in Ukraine in exchange for receiving advanced weapons or technology from Russia as the two nations deepen their ties while both are increasingly isolated and sanctioned in separate confrontations with the West. Russia's state news agency RIA Novosti published video showing Kim's armored train pulling into a station in the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur and Kim's convoy sweeping out of the station shortly afterward.

VinFast’s Rise and Fall Burns Investors in Familiar SPAC Pattern
A crash in the shares of electric-car startup VinFast Auto is serving as a warning: One of Wall Street’s hottest financial trends in recent years often ends with everyday investors getting burned. The Vietnamese firm last month became one of the latest startups to go public by merging with a shell company, an alternative route to the stock market that became popular during the pandemic. The eye-popping swings in its shares that followed mirror the volatility that has been common among startups that went public the same way and reflect the quirks of how such deals often work.

Apple to manufacture iPhone 15 Plus in India from next quarter
Apple will locally produce the iPhone 15 Plus in the next quarter, having successfully started production in India of the lower-priced base model of the series. Foxconn's plant near Chennai has started preparations to make iPhone 15 Plus, two industry executives aware of the plans said. The company unveiled its latest iPhone series on Tuesday, loading it with a faster chip that offers better gaming and a new lighter titanium shell for the Pro models among other updates. It is also targeting to double its India sales next quarter, enticing buyers with the new launches and price cuts on iPhone 13 and 14 models, which should make the October-December a record sales quarter for Apple in India, said the people cited above.'Imports to meet festive demand' The Cupertino-based company has already started commercial production of the iPhone 15 at the Foxconn plant, making it the first time an assembled-in-India iPhone will be sold right at the launch stage. However, the local iPhone 15 manufacturing capacity is still low and with the festive season around the corner, Apple will be importing the devices from its major production hub in China to meet demand, the executives said. «iPhone 15 Plus will be the next in line for assembling in India.

Kim offers Putin and Russia North Korea’s full support and refers to Moscow’s 'sacred fight'
Kim Jong Un told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that his country offers its “full and unconditional support” for Russia’s “sacred fight” to defend its security interests, in an apparent reference to the war in Ukraine, and said Pyongyang will always stand with Moscow on the “anti-imperialist” front. Through a translator, Kim called North Korea’s relations with Russia “the first priority.” Putin in his opening remarks welcomed Kim to Russia and said he was glad to see him. Putin listed economic cooperation, humanitarian issues and the “situation in the region” among the agenda items for their talks. Talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un began on Wednesday at the Vostochny cosmodrome, Russian state news agency Tass reported. The talks, which included their delegations, began shortly after Putin and Kim toured various facilities at the cosmodrome, including two launch pads. The leaders met at the remote Siberian rocket launch facility for a summit that underscores how the two leaders’ interests are aligning in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the United States. The two men began their meeting with a tour of a Soyuz-2 space rocket launch facility, at which the North Korean leader peppered a Russian space official with questions about the rockets. Kim's meeting with Putin came hours after North Korea fired two ballistic missiles toward the sea, extending a highly provocative run in North Korean weapons testing since the start of 2022, as Kim used the distraction caused by Putin’s war on Ukraine to accelerate his weapons development. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff didn’t immediately say how far the North Korean missiles flew.
