The US Fed should not succumb to market pressure
Family Feud, a popular game show when I was growing up, would ask contestants to guess how a group of people had answered a specific question. It served as a regular reminder of the importance of supplementing one’s thinking with external perspectives. If, in the tradition of Family Feud, we were to poll market participants about the turmoil we’ve seen since the worse-than-expected US jobs report, I suspect we would get quite specific responses on what is causing the global stock selloff as well as what would be the best circuit breaker to avoid further big losses.

Womens’ workforce representation study highlights need for retention and growth policies
It has built sector scorecards by analysing data of NSE-listed companies from FY 2022-23 annual reports. The data shows that banks, financial services, information technology and services companies have a larger representation of women workers than other sectors. But there were some interesting point to note at different levels of roles, on retention and implementing enabling policies to help more women find meaningful career pathways. The report points out that leading global and Indian companies have initiated several programmes for women employees. But the IT sector continues to face a significant gender gap in leadership positions. The report highlights that women in leadership and at board level are at 22%, lower than the 34% at the overall employee level. The retention rates and return-to-work after parental leave rates are closer to the average of NSE companies. It's important to focus on targeted talent development and progression planning for women employees, says the report. This could include implementing two-way feedback sessions, providing learning opportunities and facilitating networking with senior leaders. Additionally, creating customised sponsorship or mentorship programmes can help support women’s career growth.

Elon Musk embraces Donald Trump and scorns subsidies. But Tesla still lobbies for US benefits
Elon Musk endorsed Donald Trump for president last month, the Tesla founder and chief executive backed a candidate who vows to «drill, baby, drill,» «end the electric vehicle mandate» and reduce subsidies of the sort that helped Tesla become the U.S.'s dominant EV manufacturer. So instrumental have government loans, tax breaks and other EV policies been to Tesla's fast growth that despite Musk's gradual embrace of the former president and his Republican Party rhetoric in recent years, the company continues to lobby the U.S. and state governments for benefits championed by the Democratic Party. In February, for instance, Tesla in a filing with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, urged the Biden administration to allow California to pursue stricter vehicle emissions rules than the rest of the country — an idea Trump opposes.

Consumer shift to premium products drives India's electronics market growth
premiumisation trend further got magnified in sales of electronic products such as smartphones, appliances and televisions in the January to June period of this year, with the industry’s value growth significantly outpacing volume or number of units sold in brick-and-mortar stores. This indicates consumers only purchased premium or high value goods with sales of the entry-to-mid segment continue to be severely impacted. For instance, GfK reported overall mobile phone sales by volume declined by 6% in the Jan-Jun period whereas by value it went up by 10%. The smartphone segment registered a 12% increase in value, while by volume there was no growth.
