Companies now investing in premium office fit-outs
Companies are increasingly investing in office fit-out, prioritising higher specifications to enhance employee engagement and wellbeing, aiming to boost attendance, retention and attract new talent, according to experts. Data from Savills India shows a significant shift in office fit-outs, with about 35% now categorised as standard, 50% as mid-grade and 15% as high-grade, compared with pre-pandemic figures of 60%, 30%, and 10%, respectively, indicating a growing preference for premium spaces. «This trend supports the hypothesis that office occupiers are placing greater emphasis on higher-spec offices compared to a decade ago, with the aim of attracting and retaining talent by offering superior work environments,» Savills India chief executive Anurag Mathur said.

Garena is in process of fully localising its India operations before launching the blockbuster video game Free Fire in the country. Following the government's nudge for over seven months, Garena is finally moving its game server to India to be installed in Yotta Data Services' Navi Mumbai premises, sources told ET. «Yotta is working with Garena's HQ (headquarter) team on testing the server, which is showing high throughput required for handling streaming workloads with least redundancy,» a person close to the company told ET. «It is important that performance metrics are adequately tested before the game goes to market because esports tournaments put many ecosystem players at stake and therefore should be devoid of any technical snags.»

Donald Trump applied for a business visa program that he sought to restrict during his administration and which many of his allies want him to curtail in a potential second term. Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social, filed an application in June 2022 for an H-1B visa for a worker at a $65,000 annual salary, the lowest wage category allowed under the program. Federal immigration data shows the company was approved for a visa a few months later.

BH series car number plate is your choice? Court has just quashed some conditions
Maharashtra's transport commissioner imposing certain conditions while deciding on applications for registration of vehicles under the BH series. A division bench of Justices Girish Kulkarni and Firdosh Pooniwalla, in its judgment on April 12, said the circular was issued «without any authority and, hence, flawed and illegal.» The court was hearing a petition filed by a civil judge challenging the circular and denial of his application seeking registration of his vehicle under the BH series, which was introduced by the government of India in 2021 to facilitate convenient transfer of vehicles in different states and Union Territories. According to Mahendra Patil, senior civil judge in the Maharashtra State Judicial Services, he submitted his official identity card, which as per the conditions is the only compliance required to be furnished.

High demand, dip in production push millet prices up 17%
high demand, government push, social media trends and a marginal decline in production has driven up millet prices. Data released last week showed that inflation in ragi and ragi products accelerated in March to 16.6% — the second highest in over six years. The highest was 16.7% in February. «For millet, output has been flattish but higher demand due to several food industries using them has pushed up prices,» said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, Bank of Baroda. Despite the government's push, the area under ragi decreased to 1.04 million hectares in 2023-24 from 1.16 million hectares in 2022-23. According to government data, this led to a decline in production to about 1.39 million tonnes in 2023-24 from 1.69 million tonnes in 2022-23. Ragi inflation has been accelerating in double digits for the past seven months and pace picked up further since January. Jowar is no exception, either. Although inflation levels eased to 10% in March compared with 12.7% the previous month, the commodity has experienced double-digit inflation since December 2022.

View: Can milk, food, drinks drop their healthy halo 'N' just be fun and be loved?
Bournvita lost its crown in the malted drink category. GoI told ecommerce sites and other portals that Mondelez India-owned Bournvita and a few other brands should not be called 'health drinks' because the category isn't defined in the country's food laws. The trigger for this announcement was an influencer's post about the malted drink's sugar content last year. After the backlash, Bournvita, which is marketed as a health supplement for children, was forced to reduce sugar content by nearly 15%. Children find milk tasteless. So, decades ago, a new category of milk additives was born. In the 1970s, they were called milk food drinks (MFDs). MFDs were of two types: milk substitutes, which could be had by adding hot water (Horlicks being the biggest), and chocolate-flavoured milk additives, or chocolate MFDs, such as Ovaltine, which was popular in the 1960s. Then came Bournvita, Maltova, Nutramul, and Milo. In the mid-1990s, National Dairy Development Board unleashed the 'Doodh Doodh' campaign to give milk more oomph and vigour. While the ad and jingle added fun to milk, kids still wanted it to get more exciting. And the sale of chocolate MFDs continued to boom.

Budget-Friendly F1: How to attend 'Formula One' races without breaking the bank
Formula One is often the playground of the rich and the famous. At every glamorous race from Monaco to Montreal, photographs showing the world’s A-list jet set gallivanting around the paddocks give the impression that only those with a royal familysized bank account can attend. But it doesn’t have to be so. Especially in recent years, the sport has worked hard to shed its image and become more accessible. For instance, more circuits now use streets in urban centres rather than purpose-built tracks outside city limits. The intended message seems to be that you can attend a race without spending a king’s ransom. All it takes is a little foresight and creativity. Here are some pointers to get you started:

Gems, jewellery exports in FY24 dip by 12.17% to Rs 2.65 lakh cr: GJEPC
Gems and jewellery exports declined by 12.17 per cent to Rs 2,65,187.95 crore (USD 32,022.08 million) during 2023-24, compared to the previous financial year due to high interest rates in the US and slow recovery in China, Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) data showed. Gems and jewellery exports in FY23 stood at Rs 3,01,925.97 crore (USD 37,646.17 million), according to GJEPC data. «The last financial year was very challenging for all product categories. This was mainly due to slowdown in the US, India's biggest export market in the segment, due to high interest rates. Also, slow recovery in China post Covid-19,» GJEPC chairman Vipul Shah told PTI. Meanwhile, the overall exports of Cut and Polished diamonds declined by 25.23 per cent during FY24 to Rs 1,32,128.29 crores (USD 15,966.47 million) compared to Rs 1,76,716.06 crores (USD 22,046.9 million) for the same period of previous year.
