Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky plans to fix ‘fundamentally broken’ company. Here's how
Airbnb to a feature that customers have long requested with a loyalty program. And in September, New York City vastly tightened its rules on short-term rentals, nearly squeezing Airbnb out of a market that in the early days represented roughly 80% of its business. Never mind the increasing strictness of return-to-office policies, which has hampered the flexibility that spurred Airbnb’s business in the pandemic years.

World Bank keeps China 2023 GDP growth forecast but cuts 2024 outlook
World Bank has maintained its forecast for China's 2023 economic growth at 5.1%, in line with its previous estimate in April, but trimmed its prediction for 2024 to 4.4% from 4.8%, citing the persistent weakness of its property sector. For East Asia and the Pacific including China, the bank slightly trimmed its 2023 gross domestic product growth forecast to 5.0% from its prior 5.1% estimate, the World Bank said in its semi-annual regional update released on Sunday. For 2024, the bank lowered its regional outlook to 4.5% growth from 4.8%, dragged down by external factors including a sluggish global economy, high interest rates and trade protectionism. «Almost 3,000 new restrictions were imposed on global trade in 2022, three times as large as those in 2019,» the World Bank said. For China, the bounce back from the reopening of the economy following three years of ultra-stringent zero-COVID policies has faded, and elevated debt and weakness in its property sector are weighing on growth, the World Bank said in the report. After months of mostly dismal data, the world's second-largest economy has started to show signs of stabilisation. China's factory activity expanded for the first time in six months in September, an official survey showed on Saturday. Initial signs of improvement had emerged in August, with factory production and retail sales growth accelerating while declines of exports and imports narrowed and deflationary pressures eased.

What is AMOC, the heat-distributing Atlantic current?
system that helps distribute heat around the world is weakening. Why do scientists find this so worrying? AMOC is something of a poster child for tipping points, which are notional thresholds beyond which systems that have been responding gradually and incrementally to global warming undergo sudden and dramatic changes. One reason for this is its sheer power and the scope of its influence.

Flexible hours, sick pay and meals, workers in the UK get a better deal
For his manager, Barrie Chapman, the overtime he now gets is a huge boost once unheard of in the hospitality sector. Their regional manager Jen Eaton looks back in horror at the 14-hour shifts she once worked in casinos in heels with no break. Like thousands of others in lower-paid sectors of the British economy, all three have benefited from a gradual improvement in employment terms since the global pandemic and Brexit forced companies to work harder to find staff in a tight labour market. The shift follows years of warnings from unions and campaign groups that the balance of power in Britain had swung too far towards employers, leaving many lower-paid staff working unpredictable hours with poor benefits and little protection. Nick Collins, CEO of Loungers which employs Eaton, Chapman and Hughes-Davies among 8,000 staff in restaurants and bars across Britain, said expectations of employees had risen.

RBI likely to maintain status quo on rates with an eye on the dollar, oil prices
Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) rate-setting panel is likely to keep the policy interest rates unchanged later this week while continuing its protracted vigil on inflation, as the steepest increase in crude oil prices in 10 months amid signs of further rate hardening in the US lengthens the odds on an immediate turnabout in the rate trajectory at home. An ET poll of 12 market respondents showed that at the end of its October 4-6 meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is likely to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.50% while retaining its stance of withdrawal of accommodation. Such an outcome would mark the fourth successive policy review in which the MPC has maintained a status quo on rates and stance. Focus on protecting external sector «The MPC is expected to extend its hawkish pause… global crude oil prices have surged to November 2022 highs, surpassing the RBI's April estimate of $85 per barrel, with September's average approximately 9% higher than that of August,» Radhika Rao, senior economist, DBS Bank said. This has coincided with the dollar's climb as the Federal Reserve has sought to hold rates 'higher for longer', dimming the appeal of emerging market assets for global investors.

Jio cements rural dominance in July; JioBharat likely adding to growth, analysts say
Jio cemented its dominance of rural India in July as it was the only telco to add mobile users while both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost ground. Analysts said the scenario underlines the growing appetite of entry-level mobile users for Jio's internet-enabled budget feature phone, JioBharat, to shift to 4G technology. «Jio's strong (rural) momentum is likely driven by JioBharat phone subscribers, especially post Bharti' Airtel's recent hikes in the minimum recharge plans and Jio's launch of the new phone,» UBS said in a note. Latest subscriber data collated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) showed Jio added 2 million mobile users in the rural markets in July while both Airtel and Vi lost 540,000 and 690,000 rural users respectively. Jio's rural mobile user base expanded to 194.73 million in July, while Airtel and Vi's slipped to 180.84 million and 111.32 million respectively. In July, Jio's parent, Reliance Industries (RIL) had launched Jio Bharat, an internet-enabled feature phone, costing ₹999 in a bid to attract more of the estimated 250 million entry-level mobile broadband customers, especially in the rural markets where competition is set to intensify with rival Airtel also eyeing this market. Both Jio and Airtel have been seeking to grab loss-making Vi's user base in the hinterlands as bulk of the telecom sector's net 4G user additions are from rural markets.
