Kim Jong Un hosts Chinese and Russian guests at a parade celebrating North Korea's 75th anniversary
North Korea invited visiting Chinese delegates and Russian artists to a paramilitary parade featuring rocket launchers pulled by trucks and tractors, state media said Saturday, in leader Kim Jong Un's latest effort to display his ties with Moscow and Beijing in the face of deepening confrontations with Washington. The event in the capital, Pyongyang, which began Friday night to celebrate North Korea's 75th founding anniversary that fell on Saturday, came amid expectations that Kim will travel to Russia soon for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that could focus on North Korean arm sales to refill reserves drained by the Kremlin's war on Ukraine. While China has sent a delegation led by Vice Premier Liu Guozhong to the North Korea's anniversary celebrations, Russia sent a military song and dance group. South Korean media speculated that the lack of Russian government officials at the festivities in Pyongyang could be related to preparations for a summit between Kim and Putin, which Washington expects within the month.

Freddie Mercury's iconic memorabilia fetches over £3 mn at London auction
Freddie Mercury used to compose almost all of his greatest songs and the original manuscript for «Bohemian Rhapsody» were snapped up for over £3 million Wednesday when they went under the hammer in London. The Sotheby's auction room echoed to the sound of the track «We Will Rock You» before bidding began at the black-tie evening auction. The items were among over 1,400 lots of Mercury memorabilia up for grabs over the next week, with the famous auction house's facade decorated with a huge moustache for the occasion. The 59 lots sold on Wednesday brought in £12,172,290, Sotheby's said, adding that each one went for more than double the estimated price. Mercury's Yamaha quarter-tail piano went for £1,742,000 ($2,198,927), including buyer's premium and fees, while the manuscript for the epic hit song «Bohemian Rhapsody» fetched £1,379,000. Auctioneer Oliver Barker called the «Bohemian Rhapsody» lyrics — contained in 15-pages of pencil and ballpoint pen remarks — a «modern cultural icon». The manuscript also reveals that Mercury, who died from AIDS in 1991, originally intended to call the song «Mongolian Rhapsody». Mercury's cherished baby grand was purchased by the charismatic star in 1975 after an exhaustive six-month search for «the ideal instrument to bring to life» his compositions. A record 2,000 bidders from 61 countries registered to take part in the sale. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust and the Elton John Aids Foundation, two organisations involved in the fight against AIDS. «I miss Freddie to this day.

Toronto International Film Festival opens with Hayao Miyazaki's animated feature 'The Boy and the Heron'
Toronto International Film Festival opened on Thursday with "The Boy and the Heron" by famed Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, the first time an animated feature has taken the coveted spot. Although there was a dearth of star power on the red carpet due to the Hollywood actors strike, festival-goers can look forward to some 50 films over 11 days, including Craig Gillespie's «Dumb Money,» «Lee» which stars Kate Winslet and Taika Waititi's «Next Goal Wins». The festival will also include directorial debuts for Patricia Arquette with «Gonzo Girl» and for Kristin Scott Thomas with «North Star». Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka said it was an honour for «The Boy and the Heron» to have been chosen as the opener for the festival. «It shows that animation and live-action films don't need to be differentiated anymore,» he said. The film, a semi-autobiographical story of a young boy struggling with the death of his mother, is expected to Miyazaki's swan song. The 82-year-old director, known for works such as «Spirited Away» and «My Neighbor Totoro», did not attend the opening. The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have been on strike since May over pay and the use of artificial intelligence. «Gonzo Girl» stars Arquette, Camila Morrone and William Dafoe were among the few actors gaining union approval to promote their films. «I am lucky to be here, but a lot of people are unable to attend the festival,» Morrone told Reuters, calling the strike «essential» and stressing that it was important to be resolved. Over 150,000 actors and 65,000 writers across the United States have refused to resume shooting or promote films.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai reveals the first email he received from his father
In the post, Pichai also recounted the first email that he received from his father years back. «I’ve been thinking a lot about how far technology has come over the last 25 years and how people adapt to it. Years ago, when I was studying in the U.S., my dad — who was back in India — got his first email address. Hindi cinema has lost all originality. Another factor for some, put simply, is that there is far too much of Arijit Singh on offer today. To be sure, the voice behind multiple hits over the past few years (including recent chartbusters like Apna Bana Le and Kesariya) is popular and has an army of fans across the globe.
