The authorities have urged the people to keep away from the sea beach warning them of ‘large sick whales or waves or large machines’. The long-finned pilot whales are found in the Southern Hemisphere and North Atlantic Ocean. It is not yet known why the pods weres stranded, but scientists and biologists are confused about the behavior of the whales who huddled together before being stranded. They feel that the whales might have been scared of a predator like a large whale. Scientists have observed that the toothed whales use their sonar to navigate and they are more likely to get stranded compared to non-toothed whales. This is not the first time that whales have died after getting stranded on the beach. More than 200 whales were stranded on the beach of Tasmania last year September. Prior to this, 450 whales got stranded in 2020 on the beach of Tasmania in Australia.

The study by World Weather Attribution, a group of researchers based in London and the Netherlands, found that three separate heat waves in July across the Northern Hemisphere were made much worse because of decades of fossil-fuel emissions that have raised the planet’s average temperature by 2 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century.

This led to the concept of the Fire Weather Index. It predicts the areas which are susceptible to wildfires by using the weather data. It adds the rate of fire spread with the fuel being consumed. By going through the Fire Weather Index, one can predict the susceptible areas of fire. The higher you are, the more prone to wildries you are. The Fire Weather Index has six levels of danger- the very low is less than 5.2 on the scale. Low danger between 5.2 and 11.2. Between 11.2 and 21.3 you have moderate danger. The high danger lies in the range of 21.3 and 38. Between 38 and 50 you have very high danger and extreme danger in beyond 50. You can understand the possibility of wildfire by keeping an eye on this index. Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Spain are the most prone to wildfires at present. Many places in Turkey are in the area of extreme danger. Most of the Greek islands are at high to very high risk. Spain, parts of southern Italy, and Sicily have a Fire Weather Index score of 38.Copernicus, a part of the European Space program runs the FWI. It uses the data collected from satellites as well as measured from the Earth.

National Rice Research Institute at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) said, allaying fears of any further increase in the food grain's prices that had peaked on account of sluggish sowing and higher exports. There is no cause of worry for the paddy crop either in rainfall-deficient states or even in those states witnessing excessive rainfall and flooding, said AK Nayak, director at the apex rice research institute in the country. Retail prices of non-basmati rice had increased 3% in the past one month and 11.5% in one year, despite the imposition of a 20% export duty in September 2022. This prompted the government to impose a ban on the export of non-basmati white rice. In the eastern parts of the country, rainfall activity has picked up, boosting sowing, said Nayak, adding that the sowing window in these areas is open till August. «This will make up for any lack in the beginning of the season,» he said. Talking about northern states such as Punjab and Haryana which have been impacted by excessive rains and flooding, he said the paddy crop has a high tolerance for standing water and any damage is caused only if there is water above the canopy for 6-7 days or if there is submergence.

NEW DELHI : The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday revised India’s GDP growth forecast to 6.1% for 2023, up from 5.9% projected by the financial institution earlier this year as a result of stronger domestic investment. “Growth in India is projected at 6.1% in 2023, a 0.2 percentage point upward revision compared with the April projection, reflecting momentum from stronger-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter of 2022 as a result of stronger domestic investment," IMF said in a report.
