At last, inflation seems set to soften and stay in a relatively cool range
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Supply-side forces had driven India’s annual inflation to a high of 6.0% and 6.4% in 2020-21 and 2022-23 respectively, amid pandemic-led supply chain disruptions, high commodity prices, sticky service-sector pressures and elevated core inflation. Headline inflation has since drifted lower, notwithstanding sequential swings around the monsoon months and on weather-related triggers.

Worst drought in four decades: Zimbabwe to cull 200 elephants to feed its people
Zimbabwe, facing the worst drought in four decades, is set to cull 200 elephants to help feed its people, according to wildlife authorities. This decision follows a similar plan by neighbouring Namibia, which announced earlier this month that it would cull 160 wildlife animals, including 83 elephants, due to the severe drought affecting its population. The El Niño-induced drought has devastated southern Africa, leading both Zimbabwe and Namibia to declare states of emergency. The drought has directly impacted 68 million people in the region, resulting in severe food shortages and dire conditions. Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks), told Reuters, “We can confirm that we are planning to cull about 200 elephants across the country. We are working on the details of how this will be carried out.” Farawo also confirmed that the elephant meat will be distributed to communities in Zimbabwe affected by the drought.

Shanghai braces for direct hit from Typhoon Bebinca
Shanghai halted transportation links, recalled ships and shut tourism spots including Shanghai Disney Resort on Sunday as it braced for Typhoon Bebinca, in what could be the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the Chinese financial hub since 1949. The Category 1 typhoon, packing maximum sustained wind speeds near its centre of around 144 kilometres per hour (89 miles per hour), was about 500 kilometres southeast of Shanghai as of 1:00 p.m. (0500 GMT). It is expected to make landfall along China's eastern coast after midnight on Monday. The strongest storm to make landfall in Shanghai in recent decades was Typhoon Gloria in 1949, which tore through the city with gusts of 144 kph. Shanghai was last threatened by a direct hit in 2022 by the powerful Typhoon Muifa, which instead landed 300 km away in the city of Zhoushan, in Zhejiang province.
