Labour-intensive industries need to be promoted to generate more jobs: Raghuram Rajan
Reserve Bank of India’s former governor Raghuram Rajan said that India was creating enough jobs as reflected by the number of applicants for vacant posts in some states with 7 per cent economic growth. Rajan suggested that the focus must be on promoting labour-intensive industries to generate employment. He further said that some Indians at the upper-level are comfortable and have high incomes, but consumption growth from the lower half of the country has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. «That is the unfortunate part...You would think with 7 per cent growth, we would be creating a lot of jobs. But if you look at our manufacturing growth, it is more capital intensive,» he told PTI.

Shots in the air, wails and disbelief in Beirut after Hezbollah head killed
Armed men fired shots in the air and shut down shops in parts of Beirut and Hezbollah supporters said they were in a state of shock and disbelief on Saturday after the death of the Lebanese armed group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Hezbollah confirmed on Saturday Nasrallah had been killed, issuing a statement hours after the Israeli military said it had eliminated him in an airstrike on the group's headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs on Friday. Nasrallah's death marked a devastating blow to Hezbollah as it reels from an intense campaign of Israeli attacks, and even as the news emerged some of the group's supporters were desperately hoping that somehow he was still alive.

'No place in Iran where Israel can't strike': Benjamin Netanyahu’s UNGA speech sparks diplomatic walkout
Netanyahu delivered a decisive address at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, declaring that Israel would maintain its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. He warned that the conflict would persist until Israel achieves its strategic goals, amidst escalating international concern over the violence. This speech came as diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire have faltered, overshadowed by intensified airstrikes on Hezbollah targets. “Israel has been patient long enough,” Netanyahu stated, referencing the ongoing hostilities with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group active in southern Lebanon. He emphasized, “As long as Hezbollah continues on the path of war, Israel has every right to defend itself and eliminate the threat.” Netanyahu further proclaimed, “If you strike us, we will strike you; there is no place in Iran where the long arm of Israel cannot reach.”

Toll mounting in Lebanon, Israel snubs ceasefire plan
Hezbollah, defying calls from allies including the US for a halt in fighting. Israeli warplanes bombarded Lebanon, including a strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut that shook the capital. On its own side of the border, the Israeli army staged an exercise simulating a ground invasion. The relentless pressure on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, including intense airstrikes and assassinations of some of its senior commanders, raised concern that of a wider war spreading across the region. The military, which has vowed to secure Israel's northern border and return thousands of Israeli citizens to communities there, said the exercise of its 7th brigade took place a few kilometres from the Lebanese border.

Hurricane Helene threatens 'unsurvivable' storm surge and vast inland damage, forecasters say
Hurricane Helene was advancing Thursday across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, threatening an «unsurvivable» storm surge in northwestern parts of the state as well as damaging winds, rains and flash floods hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S., the National Weather Service in Tallahassee said. Helene is expected to be a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it makes landfall on Florida's northwestern coast Thursday evening. As of early Thursday, hurricane warnings and flash flood warnings extended far beyond the coast up into south-central Georgia. The governors of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas have all declared emergencies in their states. The weather service forecast storm surges of up to 20 feet (6 meters) and warned they could be particularly «catastrophic and life-threatening» in Florida's Apalachee Bay. It added that high winds and heavy rains also posed risks.

As U.N. meets, Israel pounds targets in Lebanon, sending civilians fleeing
Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, in an offensive that has plunged the country into uncertainty over what Israel will do next and how the militant group might respond. The strikes came a day after a vast wave of Israeli airstrikes, targeting about 1,600 sites in parts of the country where Hezbollah holds sway, killed hundreds of people and set off a mass flight of civilians from southern Lebanon to Beirut, the capital. The streets were clogged with traffic, and displaced people were sleeping in their cars. Hezbollah also fired about 300 rockets at northern Israel on Tuesday, according to the Israeli military, keeping up the assault it began Oct. 8, a day after its ally Hamas led the deadly attack on southern Israel from the Gaza Strip. Most of the rockets were intercepted by Israel's missile defense system, but about six people sustained minor injuries, the military said.
