Explainer: How could Russia help North Korea build a satellite?
Kim Jong Un on Wednesday toured Russia's most modern space launch centre, where President Vladimir Putin promised to help Pyongyang build satellites. The unprecedented visit comes as North Korea seeks to put its first spy satellite into orbit, an effort that has seen two failed attempts this year. The promised Russian aid comes as North Korea's scientists have vowed to try another launch of the new Chollima-1 booster in October. Here's what we know about North Korea's race for space, why it's so controversial, and how Russia might help: WHY DOES NORTH KOREA WANT A SATELLITE? Since 1998 North Korea has launched six satellites, two of which appeared to have been successfully placed in orbit. In 2015, a senior North Korean space official said the country wanted to develop cooperation with Russia on «peaceful» use of outer space, the official told TASS. The most recent successful satellite launch was in 2016.

Kim offers Putin and Russia North Korea’s full support and refers to Moscow’s 'sacred fight'
Kim Jong Un told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that his country offers its “full and unconditional support” for Russia’s “sacred fight” to defend its security interests, in an apparent reference to the war in Ukraine, and said Pyongyang will always stand with Moscow on the “anti-imperialist” front. Through a translator, Kim called North Korea’s relations with Russia “the first priority.” Putin in his opening remarks welcomed Kim to Russia and said he was glad to see him. Putin listed economic cooperation, humanitarian issues and the “situation in the region” among the agenda items for their talks. Talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un began on Wednesday at the Vostochny cosmodrome, Russian state news agency Tass reported. The talks, which included their delegations, began shortly after Putin and Kim toured various facilities at the cosmodrome, including two launch pads. The leaders met at the remote Siberian rocket launch facility for a summit that underscores how the two leaders’ interests are aligning in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the United States. The two men began their meeting with a tour of a Soyuz-2 space rocket launch facility, at which the North Korean leader peppered a Russian space official with questions about the rockets. Kim's meeting with Putin came hours after North Korea fired two ballistic missiles toward the sea, extending a highly provocative run in North Korean weapons testing since the start of 2022, as Kim used the distraction caused by Putin’s war on Ukraine to accelerate his weapons development. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff didn’t immediately say how far the North Korean missiles flew.

Kim Jong Un heads to Russia. What do Pyongyang and Moscow want from each other?
Kim Jong Un arrived in Russia on Tuesday for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that is likely to focus on Russia's desire to buy ammunition to refill reserves drained by its war in Ukraine. The meeting will also underscore deepening cooperation as the two isolated leaders are locked in separate confrontations with the U.S. In return for providing ammunition, North Korea will likely want shipments of food and energy and transfers of sophisticated weapons technologies. A meeting with Putin would be Kim's first with a foreign leader since North Korea closed its borders in January 2020. They met for the first time in April 2019, two months after Kim's high-stakes nuclear diplomacy with then-U.S.

UK's arrest of suspected spy fuels calls for tougher stance on China
China's foreign influence operations, it would represent a sensational case of infiltration. A 28-year-old British man who worked as a researcher deep inside Britain's Parliament was arrested in March on suspicion of working for the Chinese government. The man, who denies being a spy, worked with prominent lawmakers on China policy, raising fears of possible security breaches and widening a rift within the governing Conservative Party over how London should engage with an increasingly assertive Beijing. «The Chinese are infiltrating across the board; they go for anything and everything,» said Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute in London.

A tale of two Trudeaus and Canada's mollycoddling of Khalistani terror
Narendra Modi met Canadian PM Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the recent G20 Summit in Delhi and conveyed India's “strong concerns” about the continuing anti-India activities of Khalistanis in Canada, Trudeau chose to defend Khalistanis. Modi told Trudeau that Khalistanis are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises, and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship while being in nexus with drug and human-trafficking syndicates. Refusing to acknowledge the problem, Trudeau said his country will always defend the freedom of peaceful protest.

China slams UK spying reports as 'political farce'
China has lashed out at media reports alleging a man who was arrested on suspicion of espionage was gathering intelligence for Beijing, labelling the claim a «political farce».UK police said over the weekend that they had arrested a man in his twenties at his home in Edinburgh for spying, with the Sunday Times reporting he was a researcher in Britain's parliament. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service arrested him, and another man in his thirties, in March on suspicion of offences under the Official Secrets Act and both have been bailed until October. The arrests led British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to tell Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the G20 summit in New Delhi that he had «very strong concerns» about Beijing's «interference» in democracy. Asked about the media reports that the British pair were «arrested on suspicion of providing intelligence to China», a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in London said it was «malicious slander». «The claim that China is suspected of 'stealing British intelligence' is completely fabricated and nothing but malicious slander,» the spokesperson said in a statement published late Sunday. «We firmly oppose it and urge relevant parties in the UK to stop their anti-China political manipulation and stop putting on such self-staged political farce.»

China group slams India for stoking division at ‘sabotaged’ G-20
spy agency published a strong-worded criticism of India hours before Group of 20 leaders met in New Delhi, accusing the summit host of pushing its own agenda and causing disagreement. The commentary lamented that India held two prior G-20 sessions in disputed territories — one in Arunachal Pradesh that China also claims, and another in Kashmir, contested by Pakistan. The move has “sabotaged the atmosphere for cooperation at the G-20,” the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations said on its official WeChat account on Saturday. The post reveals a possible explanation for President Xi Jinping’s decision to stay away from the summit hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Foreign Ministry declined to explain the absence.

In his speeches at the vessel's launching ceremony on Wednesday and an onboard inspection on Thursday, Kim expressed satisfaction that the country has acquired its own nuclear attack submarine to counter the advanced naval assets of the U.S., KCNA said. French actor Mathieu Kassovitz sends message from hospital bed, thanks fans for prayers after dangerous bike accident
Mathieu Kassovitz, director of the 1995 film «La Haine», on Wednesday thanked fans for their support following his serious motorbike accident which left him with a broken femur and ankle. The movie star, also known for his outspoken comments on political issues including police violence, posted a video on Instagram in his first public comments since the accident at the weekend. «I thank all those who phoned me and sent messages of support,» Kassovitz said in the bare-chested Instagram story from his hospital bed. «I did not know I had so many friends, it's a pleasure. »I fell off my motorbike, it was stupid, and broke my femur and ankle and now I am in physical therapy and I have come out of the operation… See you soon guys and thank you." His latest movie «Visions», in which he stars alongside Diane Kruger, just opened in French cinemas on Wednesday. Prosecutors had said Sunday that Kassovitz was injured while taking part in a motorbike training course in the Essonne department just south of Paris. He was not involved in a collision with another vehicle, they added, but flew out of the saddle and fell hard to the ground. People close to Kassovitz said that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and had not suffered any head injuries. An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched by local prosecutors and police. More recently, Kassovitz has become know for his starring role as secret agent Malotru in the hit spy thriller series «Le Bureau des Legendes» («The Bureau»). But he burst onto the French cinema scene in 1995 as the director of «La Haine» («Hatred»).

North Korea fires several cruise missiles towards sea, says South Korean military
North Korea fired several cruise missiles towards the Yellow Sea in the early hours of Saturday, according to the South Korean military. Details of the launch were being analyzed by South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. It was the latest in a series of missile tests and military exercises conducted by the North in recent weeks including a failed spy satellite launch late last month. Seoul announced sanctions on Friday on five North Korean individuals and one company in response to Pyongyang's launch of what it said was a space rocket last month. On Thursday state media KCNA reported that Pyongyang had conducted a simulated «scorched-earth» nuclear strike on targets across South Korea, drawing criticism from Seoul.
