Banks won't auction stressed loans covertly
stressed loans will soon come to an end. Under a new framework that high-street banks agreed on last week, lenders will have to ensure that the decision to auction loans is notified to all key players in the market. This will end the practice of pushing through a sale by putting out the auction advertisement in an innocuous newspaper while keeping many potential bidders in the dark. Banks have also come together to lay down a timeline to close such deals within seven working days after lending banks give a final approval to the transaction. A model process document for transfer of stressed loans along with a checklist of information that banks would share with bidders at pre-deal stage was finalised and circulated among lenders last week, a senior banker told ET. «This is a code of conduct to enable wider participation in loan sale deals and bring more transparency.

India Inc.’s ability to repay debt picks up
NEW DELHI : Indian companies’ ability to repay debt is gradually improving despite rising interest rates, aided by cheaper inputs lifting operating performance, significant debt reduction in the recent past, and a fall in working-capital requirements. A Mint analysis of 382 companies in the BSE 500 index showed that interest coverage ratio (ICR) stood at 7.02 times in the June quarter, better than 6.73 times in the March quarter. The figure, however, is still lower than 7.22 times a year earlier.

Congress' Milind Deora hails 'evolving chemistry' of INDIA partners, says 'best example' of it is in Maharashtra
INDIA bloc in Mumbai, Congress leader Milind Deora on Sunday said seat sharing for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls among alliance partners is more or less finalised in many states with only a few states requiring more time. Deora, who is closely involved in the organising of the meeting, hailed the «evolving chemistry» between Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) partners and said the best example of that was in Maharashtra. In an interview with PTI ahead of the INDIA bloc meeting on August 31-September 1, the Congress leader from Maharashtra also asserted that there are «no problems» within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction). His remarks come close on the heels of a «split» in the NCP with Ajit Pawar and eight other NCP MLAs joining the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state on July 2. Subsequently, the meetings between NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar have been the subject of some consternation among INDIA bloc partners. Deora dismissed concerns over the developments in the NCP, saying seat sharing among MVA partners will be discussed and finalised at a later stage and what was happening within the NCP is their «internal issue». The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance is an opposition bloc of 26 parties, which was formed recently to take on the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

AI can't substitute human intelligence in adjudication: Delhi HC
human intelligence nor the humane element in the adjudicatory process, the Delhi High Court has held and said ChatGPT can't be the basis of adjudication of legal or factual issues in a court of law. Justice Prathiba M Singh stated that the accuracy and reliability of AI generated data is still in the grey area and at best, such a tool can be utilised for a preliminary understanding or for preliminary research. The court's observations came while dealing with a lawsuit by luxury brand Christian Louboutin against a partnership firm involved in the manufacture and sale of shoes allegedly in violation of its trademark. The counsel for the plaintiff submitted that «Red Sole Shoe» was its registered trademark in India and placed before court responses by ChatGPT with respect to its «reputation». «The said tool (ChatGPT) cannot be the basis of adjudication of legal or factual issues in a court of law.

Three US Marines dead after aircraft crashes during drills in Australia
US Marines died Sunday after an Osprey aircraft crashed on a remote tropical island north of Australia during war games, US military officials said. Five Marines had been rescued from the crash site and flown to a hospital in Darwin in a «serious condition», the US officials said, while Australian police said they were triaging the rest of the injured crew at the scene. «There were a total of 23 personnel on board,» US military officials said in a statement. «Three have been confirmed deceased while five others were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition.» Rescue efforts were complicated by the location of the crash — the remote and sparsely populated Melville Island about 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of the Australian mainland. «Recovery efforts are ongoing,» US officials said, adding that an investigation into the cause of the incident had been launched. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as «tragic» and «regrettable» but stressed that authorities were still trying to piece together what happened. «We want to make sure that any information that is provided is absolutely accurate,» he told reporters. The Osprey — a mix between a helicopter and a plane — was taking part in the Predators Run exercises, a joint series of warfighting drills involving thousands of soldiers from the US and Australia, as well as other militaries such as Indonesia and the Philippines. Northern Australia has become an increasingly important staging ground for the US military in recent years, as Washington and Canberra work together to counter China's growing clout in the Asia-Pacific region. — Troubled aircraft — The Osprey aircraft has a troubled history, blighted by a string of fatal crashes over the
