Falling markets are just what you needed. Here’s why
Investing in stocks is often described as simple but not easy. Yet, for much of the past twelve months, making money in the market seemed to be just that—simple and easy. It felt almost effortless. Any approach, from thoughtful strategies to pure intuition, seemed to yield handsome returns. The more you invested, the more you made. The less you understood the risks involved, even if it was part of your family’s future, the richer you got.

AQI blues: What India can learn from China to curb air pollution
On Monday morning, AQI levels in the city remained dangerously high. Notable readings included 919 in Mundka, 762 in ITI Jahangirpuri, and 624 in Anand Vihar, placing these areas in the 'severe-plus' category. In Beijing, the capital of China, pollution is nearly 10 times less than in Delhi. More than a decade ago, Beijing was known as the smog capital of the world where air pollution caused thousands of deaths every year. In a decade, starting in 2013, Beijing was able to bring down its air pollution drastically with a host of measures. Can Delhi learn anything from Beijing's war on air pollution?

Karnataka Congress plans case against Mahayuti's ruling coalition for 'misleading' ads to win votes
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told the media in Bengaluru that the government was examining registering a case against the ruling coalition in Maharashtra for running an ad campaign calling the state’s guarantee schemes as fake. Siddaramaiah listed out the programmes the state’s Congress regime came up with and said people cutting across communities and religions had benefited from them. The government, he added, was spending Rs 56,000 crore a year on them, while wondering why the BJP was not implementing the same in states it was in power.

BJP's 'chota popat' jibe at Rahul Gandhi after he mocks PM Modi's 'ek hain toh safe hain' slogan
Rahul Gandhi's swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek hai toh safe hai' slogan, the BJP hit back at the Congress leader on Monday, calling him "chota popat" which it claimed was coined by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray to mock him. The party also slammed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his «poisonous snakes should be killed» barb, saying it shows the party's Emergency mindset which likens rivals to snakes and incites violence against them. Earlier in the day, claiming a link between the BJP's slogan and the Dharavi redevelopment project being given to the Adani Group, Gandhi pulled out two posters from a safe he had brought to his press conference in Mumbai — one featuring a picture of industrialist Gautam Adani and PM Modi along with the caption «Ek hai toh Safe hai» and another showing a map of the project. «It was a very low-level press conference. Bringing a safe and creating drama around it, holding of this kind of press conference by the so-called top leader of the so-called national party does not suit Rahul Gandhi and the Congress,» BJP MP and national spokesperson Sambit Patra said reacting to Gandhi's jibe.

68% companies continue to offer WFH option as benefits outweigh drawbacks
Remote work was a novelty before Covid-19 broke out, with less than one in three companies (30%) in India offering the option, but stringent restrictions during the pandemic made almost all companies adopt WFH policies. And 68% companies continue with these policies, said a joint report by industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and business school Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), titled ‘Work-from-home: Benefits and costs’. While about 5% of companies allow fully remote work, almost half of them expect employees to be present in the office for two-three days a week.

Thousands of Woodford investors join RGL lawsuit against Hargreaves Lansdown
Their claim, filed on Friday (15 November), will join the original one filed in October 2022 on behalf of around 2,750 investors, taking the total number of HL claimants to more than 5,000, RGL said. The contention centres on Hargreaves Lansdown's continued promotion of the former Woodford Equity Income fund (WEIF), up until its suspension in 2019, even though the strategy was already facing diversification and liquidity issues. FCA completes all Woodford investigations but still no end in sight RGL added it plans to file on behalf of additional HL customers who were invested in th...

Sri Lankan President Dissanayaka opts for smaller Cabinet with fresh faces
Anura Kumara Dissanayaka on Monday appointed a 21-member Cabinet in the new NPP government, keeping with his pre-election promise to streamline the governance system and ease the burden on taxpayers. The National People's Power (NPP) has been advocating a smaller government to reduce costs for the public. Since the NPP won the presidential election in September, the government functioned with just 3 ministers, including the President. As per the island nation's Constitution, there is a provision for appointing a 30-member Cabinet. Dissanayaka retained the finance and defence portfolios, while appointing 12 new parliament members to key positions and entrusting eight veteran members, who have served since 2000, with significant responsibilities.

SC junks PIL seeking inquiry into death of Subhash Chandra Bose
Supreme Court on Monday junked a petition seeking an inquiry into the death of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan dismissed the public interest litigation, saying the top court is not a remedy for everything. «It's not the court's job to run the government,» the bench said. The apex court had earlier come down heavily on the petitioner, saying the plea contains «reckless and irresponsible allegations» against leaders who are no longer alive.

In addition to child casualties, which include 659 children killed and 1,747 children injured — amounting to at least 16 children killed or injured every week — millions of children continue to have their lives upended due to ongoing attacks. UNICEF said that children are enduring relentless hostilities, prolonged displacement and severe shortages of essential resources including safe water, electricity, and other necessities. Escalating attacks on Ukrainian territory have sharply increased civilian casualties and infrastructure damage since July this year.
