ETMarkets PMS Talk: How this fund manager gave over 60% return to HNI investors in 1 year using eQGP approach
“If you had invested 50 lakh and added another 61.8% to it, the 50 lakh would have become roughly 81 lakh over this period of one year,” says Alok Agarwal, Head-Quant & Fund Manager, Alchemy Capital. In an interview with ETMarkets, Agarwal said: “We developed the eQGP framework. The last three letters—Q, G, and P—stand for quality, growth, and price action, respectively” Edited excerpts: The Alchemy Smart Alpha 250 will be completing its first year in August. Many congratulations on that. Could you take us through the performance of the fund as well? Alok Agarwal: Alchemy Smart Alpha 250 is a large and mid-cap strategy that invests only in the top 250 stocks by market cap. So, it is essentially a completely large and mid-cap strategy.

Apple India business value exceeds ₹2 lakh Cr. How did it reach there?
Apple Inc's business in India, including exports, crossed ₹2 lakh crore in fiscal 2024, driven not only by a surge in the local manufacturing and export of iPhones, but also a spurt in domestic sales of its other products including MacBooks, iPads and Watches. The US-based tech giant has likely exhibited the fastest growth in production and exports by any company in the last 50 years in India, making it the largest global value chain operating here, said officials. The company exported ₹1.35 lakh crore worth of iPhones, highest by any single brand in FY24 from India, while local sales were ₹68,000 crore. The Economic Survey 2023-24 mentioned Apple five times, underscoring the company's role in India's efforts to become a global smartphone manufacturing hub.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation plans to invest Rs 1.7 lakh crore over the next five years to grow its core oil refining and fuel marketing business as well as in 'future big bets' of petrochemicals and green energy, its chairman G Krishnakumar has said. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), currently, owns about 14 per cent of India's oil refining capacity and about a quarter of the fuel retailing network. It plans to grow these businesses while foraying into newer areas. The firm is now implementing the first phase of a multi-decade aspirational journey in the form of 'Project Aspire' — its five-year strategic framework that is based on two fundamental pillars — 'Nurturing the Core' and 'Investing in Future Big Bets', he said in the company's latest annual report. «Our mid-term strategy is on a continuum. While we remain committed to growing our core businesses, which include refining and marketing petroleum products and upstream, we are equally focused on our big bets comprising petrochemicals, gas, green energy, non-fuel retail, and digital.

Foxconn looks to tech on more than making smartphones
Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn is looking to move up the value chain to go beyond smartphones and make products for sectors like information and communication technology (ICT), electric vehicles (EV), batteries as part of their EV strategy and digital health in its next phase of growth in India, its chairman Young Liu told ET on Saturday. “Foxconn is very well known for its vertical integration capabilities. Definitely, we want to move up on the value chain as much as we can in India. That’s what we will be doing in the ICT sector,” Liu said on the sidelines of the inauguration of the company’s massive industrial housing project in Sriperumbudur. “For sectors other than ICT, we think (we will focus on) EVs and energy and also the digital health industry, like wearables for personal use, home use type of medical devices,(and) in hospitals you can have cloud-based digital health systems,” he added. In the case of energy, Foxconn is looking to target batteries, which will be related to its larger EV strategy. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will play a “very big part” in the company’s strategy as it makes “a lot of impossible things possible,” he said.

Until the guns fall silent: Government’s new aggressive strategy in Bastar’s Red Corridor
Bastar division — can’t help flaunting the three yellow stars shining on his shoulder strap. The stars signify the 36-year-old’s rank as an inspector of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), a specialised police unit that is made up of a significant number of for mer militants. He commands a team of 60 police personnel constantly on the lookout for, well, ambushes by his former comrades. “In the jungle, we can fight like guerrillas for days and nights,” says Mudami, who has been instrumental in at least three significant operations against Maoists in recent months. Having spent seven years (2005-12) in the ranks of the banned CPI (Maoist), Mudami, a native of Gangaloor in Bijapur district, possesses deep insights into their military tactics and psychological strategies. The DRG has been instrumental in executing the state government’s aggressive new strategy in Bastar’s Red Corridor, leading to the elimination of 140 militants in just seven months this year. Yet, the sustainability of this military approach remains in question.

Ramakrishna Dalmia: A capitalist with the heart of a revolutionary
NEW DELHI : Indian business over the years has had very few mavericks with the mix of audacity and controversy that Ramakrishna Dalmia, the founder of the Dalmia group, did. As much a product of his times as an architect of his destiny, he was a defiant and towering figure, his life a potent cocktail of outsized personality, political ambition and shrewd financial dealings. To that, he added strategic alliances, including his little-known piquant friendship with his neighbour Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Exit stocks that have run their course, be 80-85% invested & keep cash handy: Sandip Sabharwal
Sandip Sabharwal, asksandipsabharwal.com, says to identify stocks that have run their course. Sabharwal exited railway stocks, Tata Motors, cut down one or two other holdings, and is holding some cash on the sidelines. He says investors should be 80-85% invested, keep the rest in cash, and wait for opportunities that markets will provide. All stocks do not move in the same cycle. So, some sectors will underperform at some time. It will allow you to buy into them. So, that has to be the strategy now. It does not look like we are going to have a straight-line up-move from here on. We need to time to enter into our opportunities and hold on to them. Piramal Pharma, for three quarters in a row, has been showing improved performance and is almost back to Rs 200, the price before it got demerged from the main company, fell to Rs 60, and then clawed back to almost Rs 182-185. Your view? Sandip Sabharwal: Not specifically. But overall, if you monitor pharma sector results this year. You will see that they have also benefited from low chemical and input prices. So, across the board, the margin improvement in pharma companies and result delivery is much above expectations. It is an industry phenomenon and those tailwinds would remain for some more time.
