NEET-PG exam cancelled after intel input on possible 'impersonation'
While there was no «leak» per se of the online exam, there were inputs received by the health ministry and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) -that conducts NEET-PG — that indicated a high possibility of the exam getting compromised, ET has reliably learnt. «There was no actual leak but credible complaints and inputs were there of possible impersonation attempts at some centres. There were also intelligence inputs on the same. That is why it was decided to postpone the exam,» a senior official confirmed to ET.

Teaching law in regional languages can improve access to legal system: CJI
Chief Justice of India Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud on Saturday said law students should be well-versed with regional languages and laws so that people's access to the legal system can be improved. Addressing the third convocation of Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow, Justice DY Chandrachud underscored the importance of imparting legal education in «easy language», asserting that it is currently a shortcoming in the legal profession. Citing an analysis done by the research department of the Supreme Court on 81 universities and colleges, the CJI said, «It was found that common people experience hurdles in understanding their rights and schemes meant for them as they do not know English.» «This means that in law universities, legal education is imparted English, and many times, students at legal aid centres are not able explain legal procedures to the common people in regional languages,» he said.

India-Russia summit in Moscow to focus on payment system for trade
India-Russia annual summit in Moscow on Tuesday between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladmir Putin will be on devising mechanisms for the easy and quick transfer of money between the two countries. This has gained significance in the backdrop of the ban on the use of SWIFT by Russia and the unprecedented surge in bilateral trade since the Ukraine war. The two leaders are also expected to initiate a process to allow the use of national currencies by tourists and students, ET has learnt. This will include the use of RuPay cards in Russia and MiR cards in India, according to persons familiar with the matter. While 60% of India-Russia trade is currently in national currencies, the need for real-time and faster payment in the absence of SWIFT has been felt. It is in this context that Modi and Putin are expected to focus on creating a special mechanism, said the people cited above.

US delays H-1B visa system overhaul, F-1 student protection rules
H-1B visa system haul to the end of the year. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is gearing up to release several significant regulations, with the most anticipated being the modernization of the H-1B program. Earlier this year, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) shifted the H-1B cap lottery to selection by beneficiary rather than registration, alongside measures to prevent fraud. The next phase, slated for December 2024, will enhance cap-gap protections for F-1 students, revise the H-1B specialty occupation definition, expand the Fraud Detection and National Security site visit program, and ensure USCIS adjudicators defer to prior decisions.

Easynomics: Of exam paper leaks, Byju’s, Kota Factory, and Dunki
₹200 a pop (well, it was the 1990s, things were a lot cheaper then.) Very soon, students started walking out one by one simply because they had only prepared for the questions that had been leaked and no more. On top of that it was a difficult paper—not of a kind where one could just vomit what one had mugged up, which is how most school and college exams were back then. After the exam was over, the explanation offered was that the administrators had come to know that the paper had been leaked and so had changed it to the backup question paper, which apparently had also been prepared and printed.

Transforming governance through AI
governance and bring about a paradigm shift in citizen-centric delivery of services. Imagine a student applying for college admissions. Instead of separately applying for numerous universities and colleges with the need for filling multiple applications with repetitive data each time, an AI-driven system would proactively collate the basic demographic information about the student and suggest the probable list of colleges based on his/her score in the qualifying examination.
