Indian interests at stake as Bangladesh remains tense; court scraps job quota
Bangladesh situation remaining tense and volatile, notwithstanding the decision by the country's Supreme Court on Sunday to scrap the student reservation policy which is the genesis of the current crisis. Opposition BNP through the Jamaat-e-Islami has threatened to unseat the Hasina government and has launched a campaign to influence the country's Army to prevent it from safeguarding the dispensation. A fake letter signed by «junior officers» of Bangladesh Army was circulated with an aim to pressurise the Army Chief to take a neutral stand. Dhaka-based sources told ET that the country's security establishment is backing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On Sunday Bangladesh's Supreme Court scrapped most of the quotas that have sparked protests and in which at least 114 people have been killed. The Supreme Court's Appellate Division dismissed a lower court order that had reinstated the quotas, directing that 93% of government jobs will be open to candidates on merit, without quotas, reports said.

No large-scale irregularities in NEET-UG test: Govt
National Testing Agency (NTA) published the full results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) 2024 on its website, the Centre has maintained its claim that there is no evidence of any large-scale irregularities in the examination. Preliminary analysis of the data indicated that the highest number of students with highest scores are from Rajasthan, with as many as 482 students securing 700 plus score. A similar score was secured by 205 students in Madhya Pradesh; 194 in Kerala and 184 in Uttar Pradesh. Government sources have rejected the apprehensions that irregularities may have taken place at other centres. Government sources have maintained that the «breach» of the examination paper was «localised» and occurred only at one centre in Bihar.«Despite the breach at one centre in Bihar and hiring seven solvers, the beneficiaries (students) of wrongdoing could not benefit substantially,» said a government official on the condition of anonymity.

Bangladesh Unrest: Will offer shelter to anyone in distress, says Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said in wake of the violence in Bangladesh, she would keep the doors of her state open for people in distress and offer them shelter, referring to the United Nations resolution on refugees. «If someone knocks at my door seeking refuge due to trouble in Bangladesh, I will give them shelter,» Banerjee said, adding, «Don't worry if you have family members in Bangladesh, or people who have come here and got stuck, we will help them. If people come here in a helpless state and the people knock at the door of Bengal, we will surely give them shelter. We will not step in or talk about it as Bangladesh is a sovereign and the Indian government will speak about it. Our empathy and solidarity are with people and students as many lives were lost,» Banerjee said. «We are sad to see so many deaths and my heart goes out to those students who were killed,» she further said. «I should not be speaking on the affairs of Bangladesh as it is a subject matter of the Centre,» Banerjee added. The West Bengal CM's comments came amid the ongoing protests in Bangladesh that erupted over demands of an end to a quota system that reserves up to 30% government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's war of independence in 1971 against Pakistan.

State has no locus standi: Central govt sources on Mamata Banerjee offering shelter to people from Bangladesh
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered shelter to people in distress from Bangladesh, sources in the Central government said a state administration has no locus standi on the issue. These matters are handled by the Union government and the comments are «totally misplaced», the sources said. In an address at a public event in Kolkata, Banerjee, referring to violence-hit Bangladesh, said she would keep the doors of West Bengal open for people in distress from the neighbouring country and offer them shelter. «These are matters which are handled by the Union government,» said a source in the Central government.

Indo-Bangla trade comes to standstill as students' protests intensify
Bangladesh via land ports came to a standstill on Sunday as there was no movement of cargo trucks to and fro due to the ongoing student protests in the neighbouring country, officials said. The Bangladeshi side of the Petrapole landport remained non-functional, they said. Nearly one-third of land-based trade between India and Bangladesh takes place through Petrapole. «Trade from other land ports to Bangladesh, including Petrapole, Gojadanga, Fulbari, and Mahadipur, has also stalled as Bangladeshi Customs announced a two-day holiday from Sunday, following the government's declaration of a holiday except for essential services due to unrest,» West Bengal Exporters' Coordination Committee Secretary Ujjal Saha said. The cargo trucks that crossed over to Bangladesh on Saturday from Mahadipur port in Malda have not returned, but they are safe, he said.

Bangladesh’s top court scales back government jobs quota after deadly unrest killed scores
Bangladesh’s top court on Sunday scaled back a controversial quota system for government job applicants after it led to nationwide unrest and deadly clashes between police and protesters that have killed scores of people. The Supreme Court in its verdict ordered 93% of the government jobs to be allocated on a merit-based system, leaving the remaining 7% for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971 and other categories. Earlier, the system reserved 30% of such jobs the relatives of war veterans. Sunday's verdict comes after weeks of demonstrations — mostly led by students — that turned deadly on Tuesday after protesters began clashing with police. During the week, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets and hurled smoke grenades to scatter stone-throwing protesters who filled the streets and university campuses. Sporadic clashes in some parts of Dhaka, the capital, were reported on Saturday but it was not immediately clear whether there were any fatalities.

Curfew extended in Bangladesh as top court set to rule on job quotas that sparked deadly unrest
The nationwide demonstrations — called for mainly by student groups — began weeks ago to protest a quota system that reserves up to 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's war of independence in 1971. Violence erupted Tuesday, with the Daily Prothom Alo newspaper on Saturday reporting the death of at least 103 people so far. Bangladeshi authorities haven't shared any official numbers of those killed and injured.

Radicals, ISI, NGOs politicise Bangladesh student protests
Jamaat-e-Islami backed by Pakistan's ISI, is under the scanner for instigating violence and transforming student protests into a political movement in Bangladesh that has impacted the routine of millions including Indian students there, nearly 1,000 of whom have returned so far. The motive of Pakistan's army and ISI is to destabilise the Shiekh Hasina government and bring the opposition BNP back in power through protests and street violence, highly placed sources told ET. The Hasina government is monitoring the activities of opposition leaders, they said. The role of the ISI to undermine the Hasina government which has cracked down against radicals is nothing new, but now, what started as a student protest against quotas in jobs has been transformed into a political movement through infiltration of cadres of opposition parties into the protesting groups, people tracking the developments said.

Bangladesh Army out in force as police fire on protesters
DHAKA: Soldiers were patrolling Bangladeshi cities on Saturday to quell growing civil unrest sparked by student demonstrations, with riot police firing on protesters who defied a government curfew. This week's violence has killed at least 123 people so far, according to a count of victims reported by police and hospitals, and poses a monumental challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's autocratic government after 15 years in office. A government curfew went into effect at midnight and the premier's office asked the military to deploy troops after police again failed to subdue widespread mayhem.

History of violence in Bangladesh, a country born out of war
protests by thousands of students in Bangladesh against quotas in government jobs has brought focus to a history of violence in a country born out of a war between India and Pakistan in 1971 in which nearly 3 million people were killed. Its founding father and first prime minister Sheikh Mujibur Rehman was assassinated in 1975 in a military coup which brought in a long period of military rule. Though democracy was restored slowly by 1990, the country of nearly 170 million people has been rocked by sporadic periods of sectarian or political violence in recent years.

NEET-UG case: CBI arrests RIMS MBBS student who 'solved' papers
CBI Friday arrested a first-year MBBS student of Ranchi's Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for allegedly being part of a 'solver module' working with an engineer who had stolen the NEET-UG question papers, officials said. RTE quota: HC junks Maharashtra govt notification giving conditional exemption to private schools
Bombay High Court on Friday quashed the Maharashtra government's notification that exempted private schools within a one-kilometre radius of government or aided schools from Right to Education (RTE) Act quota admissions. A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar said the notification dated February 9 was «ultra vires» to Article 21 of the Constitution of India and provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, also known as the RTE. «The notification is held to be null and void,» the court said. The court, in its judgment, said the mandate of the law casts a duty not only on the government but also on private unaided schools to provide education to children in the age group of six to 14 years from the disadvantaged section of society.
