Central spending gives a boost to liquidity, brings overnight rate 10 bps below repo
government spending after the polls has injected fresh liquidity into the banking system, bringing down overnight borrowing rates, Treasury Bill yields and, in turn, short-term financing costs for Indian companies, even as the central bank seems to be in no great hurry to lower policy rates. After being at or above the Reserve Bank of India’s repo rate of 6.50% in May and June, the overnight weighted average call rate (WACR) has averaged 6.39% so far in July, more than 10 basis points lower than the benchmark policy rate, an analysis of daily central bank data showed. One basis point is a hundredth of a percentage point. The key driver of the evident shift in banking system liquidity to a surplus from a protracted deficit has been a flow of government expenditure — of about Rs 1 lakh crore — over the past few days. “Government cash surplus (Centre and states), which had peaked at Rs 5.1 lakh crore as of May 24 after the RBI dividend, has reduced to Rs 2.1 lakh crore as of July 11, with a pick-up in the pace of government expenditure,” said Gaura Sengupta, chief economist, IDFC First Bank.

Budget 2024-25: We must balance fiscal prudence with support for economic growth
₹2.1 trillion received in May 2024 has significantly eased the government’s fiscal constraint for the fiscal year 2024-25. CII has recommended that a part of this windfall be used for boosting capital spending by 25% over the revised figure for 2023-24. This would help maintain the upward trajectory of public capital expenditure and help crowd in private investment.

India needs a data-driven strategy to plug skill development gaps
India’s rapidly growing youth population is a double-edged sword for its economic aspirations. While the demographic dividend presents a tremendous opportunity for growth, capitalizing on it calls for equipping the workforce with skills in line with the changing demands of the global economy. World Bank data shows a concerning trend: India’s labour mobilization rates have fallen from over 70% in 1990 to 56% in recent years.

Asix months’ grace period was something I learnt to negotiate in assignments as one of the first women working in the infrastructure sector. When I was posted in the ports sub-sector, or in a large infrastructure project, many would question my suitability as a woman officer for a role in a male-dominated field. Inevitably, I would ‘beg’ for six months before a decision was taken to re-post me to an assignment considered more conducive for a woman officer.

Why has Microsoft decided to provide iPhones to Chinese employees who use Android smartphones?
Microsoft has asked its employees working in China to use only iPhones for work. According to Bloomberg, the Bill Gates-founded company asked hundreds of its employees to verify their identities through the Microsoft Authenticator password manager and the Identity Pass app, available on Apple devices. As Google's mobile services, including its Google Play app store, are not available in China, the company blocked employees from using Android devices to access its corporate platforms. Consequently, Apple's App Store remains the only place for Microsoft employees in China to download and use the Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass apps.

BoE's Jonathan Haskel argues for rates hold amid 'tight and impaired' labour market
In the first speech following a six-week long silence from the Bank of England due to the UK snap election, Haskel argued higher inflation will stay for quite some time. Speaking at King's College London on Monday (8 July), he noted that despite «encouraging signs», with inflation falling back to the BoE's 2% target, this is likely to be temporary. He highlighted that the UK's wage-price system has been subject to a «sequence of enormous shocks over recent years», which contributed to a «tight and impaired» labour market. This will result in inflation staying above target for a while,...
