BJP targets INDIA bloc over Kallakurchi tragedy that claimed 56 lives, calls it 'murder'
Congress and alleged that they were silent on the hooch tragedy in Kallakurchi, Tamil Nadu and called it a murder of 32 Dalits. «Today we are here to discuss news from Tamil Nadu, it is about a hooch tragedy, illicit liquor from Kallakurchi, a district of Tamil Nadu. When I came to hold this press conference and was checking the figures, the number of dead was 56. More than 56 people have died and many of them are critical, still about 200 people are admitted to the hospital. This is such an important issue and I am surprised that Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, DMK and all the people of the INDIA alliance are silent on this issue,» said BJP MP Sambit Patra. He further alleged that the INDIA bloc was silent as they felt that it was not serving their interests.

We are actually raising the real repo rate: MPC's Jayanth Varma
repo rate, the Monetary Policy Committee is not keeping rates unchanged, but actually raising the real repo rate, which is adjusted for inflation, Jayanth Varma, an external member of the rate-setting panel. Varma, who has expressed concerns about growth sacrifice due to restrictive monetary policy, voted for a 25-basis-point rate cut in the MPC's June policy review. Edited excerpts from the interview with Bhaskar Dutta: The RBI has been placing emphasis on the arduous and slow manner in which inflation is declining to the 4% target. Is the emphasis on reaching 4% and thus keeping rates unchanged a matter of ensuring the credibility of the monetary authority? First of all I think it is important to keep a sharp focus on the real policy rate and not on the nominal repo rate. It is a mistake to think that we are keeping rates unchanged by maintaining the same nominal repo rate; the fact is that, we are actually increasing the real repo rate. Second, there is no reason to worry about credibility at this point of time. Inflation expectations are well anchored, and the inflation targeting regime is working quite well. I do not find any merit in the proposition that an excessively high interest rate is needed to establish the credibility of monetary policy.

States hike in healthcare expenditure to help meet India's '2.5% of GDP' target
sanitation, is set to achieve the target of 2.5% of GDP by 2024-205 even as the centre’s allocation failed to reach 0.8% of GDP. As states managed to push healthcare expenditure to 1.58% of GDP last year, the combined effort of states and Centre added up to 2.13% of GDP. Public healthcare expenditure includes allocation of health and family welfare, Ayush, research and water supply and sanitation. By this calculation, the centre's expenditure was only 0.58% of GDP and 48% of this was spent on water and sanitation. Allocation for family welfare has gone down to 0.26% of GDP lower than the 2018-19 budget where the centre spent 0.28% of GDP.

India women eye ODI series clean sweep against South Africa
India were able to tame varied challenges thrown at them by South Africa so far, and they will be eager to take the series to its fitting conclusion of a 3-0 margin during the third and final ODI in Bengaluru on Sunday. Currently, the margin stands 2-0 in favour of India but that insuperable position has not come without its own trials by fire. In the first match, the Indian batters had to come back from a perilous 99 for five before making a 260-plus total. The home side bowlers defended the target well too.

How much to invest to accumulate Rs 1 crore in 10 years, 15 years, 20 years
Equity mutual funds are one of the investments that could help to achieve your dream goal of Rs 1 crore. The next question is how much you need to invest. And for how long? Keep in mind that no matter where you invest, you will not become a crorepati overnight. So, it will take some amount of time. So, the next thing you need to reach the goal is discipline. You need to invest regularly. One of the best ways to invest consistently in a disciplined way is to opt for a systematic investment plan(SIP). Not only it helps to build a big lump sum amount over a period of time but it also allows you to start small and scale it up gradually. Even if you start a SIP in an equity mutual fund with a monthly investment of Rs 1,000, you can accumulate Rs 2.2 lakh in 10 years, assuming you get an annual return of 12%. As you can see, even a small investment in SIP can grow your wealth significantly in the long term.

Indian national Nikhil Gupta extradited in Pannun foiled murder plot: What's the impact on Indo-US ties?
Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, has been extradited from the Czech Republic to the United States in connection with an alleged foiled plot to murder Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. This extradition has brought renewed attention to the case against Gupta, who allegedly hired a hitman at the behest of an Indian government official. The US Department of Justice claims Pannun was targeted for exercising his freedom of speech in America. Gupta has pleaded not guilty. Gupta's extradition was approved by Czech authorities on June 3 but was made public just before the visit of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to India. Sullivan’s visit, primarily aimed at reviewing the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval, was overshadowed by the developments in the Gupta case. Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blazek announced the extradition the same day Sullivan landed in India. Subsequently, a group of Democrat senators wrote to Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanding a stronger response to the alleged Indian involvement in the plot. According to the US Department of Justice, Pannun is a dual US-Canadian national and political activist. They assert that «Pannun is an American national and political activist who was targeted for exercising a 'quintessential American right: his freedom of speech.'»

Fending off Houthis requires double the fleet, EU force says
Red Sea needs to more than double in size because of escalating attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the head of the operation said. Four EU vessels have been patrolling the waters off the coast of Yemen since February. In that time, they’ve provided “close assistance” to 164 ships, shot down more than a dozen unmanned aerial vehicles and destroyed four anti-ship ballistics missiles, Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis said in an interview on Wednesday. The Yemen-based Houthis began attacking vessels last year to pressure Israel and its allies over the war in the Gaza Strip. Their campaign has roiled global shipping, forcing many vessels to sail thousands of miles around southern Africa instead — despite the EU operation and US and UK bombing that began in January.

NRIs of the world, keep on depositing
global economic crisis, interest and exchange rates moved steadily to make NRI deposits more rewarding. This was aided by temporary easing of interest rate flexibility, and risk provision allowed by RBI on such deposits. Finally, India has not been a contributor to global uncertainty in economic or political terms, which improves the risk profile of deposits held by NRIs in the country. These favourable influences are expected to continue, making for secular growth in India's non-resident deposits.
